Home Match A New Idea For Housing Do you have an extra room in your home? Are you looking for an affordable place to live? Covia Community Services, a nonprofit providing housing and services for older adults, is excited to partner with the City of Fremont to assume management of the successful shared housing program previously offered by HIP Housing. Covia’s Home Match program will continue to assist home seekers who work, live, or go to school in Fremont by matching them with home providers in Fremont, Newark or Union City. The program is open to participants 18 and over. Through Home Match, home providers receive monthly rent income and/or an exchange of services to provide help with things such as grocery shopping, pet care, or transportation. Home seekers benefit from affordable rent and an established community. Both benefit from companionship. Covia’s Home Match staff looks forward to building relationships with community partners to offer a solution to meet the escalating Bay Area housing crisis. FRC Holds 20th Annual Staff ‘Day Away’ Conference
FRC Staff at the 2018 FRC ‘Day Away’ Conference
Over 100 staff members from the 24 FRC agencies recently met for a day of learning, networking and rejuvenation. This annual conference is part of the FRC’s ongoing training program to keep staff abreast of new or changing programs and services. This year’s event also celebrated staff’s service to the community and included self-care strategies which are
important when working in the social work field. Staff appreciation was demonstrated throughout the day with wellness kits, stress-reducing activities and a keynote presentation on “Self-Care for the Helping Professional” by Jean Steel of Happy People Win. The conference was designed to train and revitalize our staff so they in turn can help others.
The State Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) offers Student Services to those aged 16—21 years who have or are eligible for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 plan. DOR offers activities designed to provide job exploration and preparation to ensure students receive skills and knowledge necessary to reach their educational, career, and life goals: •
Job Exploration Counseling to explore interests and careers that are right for the individual.

Post-Secondary Counseling to learn about college or vocational school opportunities and resources available after high school.
•
Workplace Readiness Training to prepare for successful employment and independence.
•
Self-Advocacy to take charge of one’s future.
•
Work-Based Learning Experience through internships, volunteer work, or other on-the-job training to gain the skills to prepare for one’s future career.

Community Resources for Independent Living
Community Resources for Independent Living (CRIL) is a peer-based disability resource agency that provides advocacy and resources for people with disabilities. CRIL is located at FRC Suite #A100 and is open Monday through Friday, 9am-1pm. Services are offered in English, Dari and Farsi. Services are offered in Spanish by appointment. The independent living philosophy which CRIL practices is about helping people control their own destiny. Independent Living is not about quick fixes but about learning skills that people can apply to any problem in their
life, not just the current one. CRIL services include Housing Search Assistance, Benefits Assistance, Travel Training, Assistive Technology, Personal Assistant Services, Systems Advocacy, Independent Living Skills, and Accessible Van Rental. CRIL offers services at no charge except the Accessible Van Rental (hourly rental). EXPANDED WINTER SHELTER
The City of Fremont Human Services Department is preparing an expanded Winter Shelter to serve the Tri-City homeless community. Once it launches, the shelter will be open 7 nights a week through mid-March offering food, showers, and a sleeping bag/cot, plus housing assessments and limited health services during the week.
The Winter Shelter will be located at the Fremont Senior Center, 40086 Paseo Padre Parkway. Guests must arrive between 6.30—8.00pm. To find out when the shelter will open, call the Winter Shelter Info Line at 510.574.2222.
Fremont City Council to Consider Local Minimum Wage Ordinance Fremont City Council will consider establishing a local minimum wage ordinance that raises the minimum wage in the city to $15/hr in 2020. Currently, the statewide minimum wage is set to take effect beginning January 2022. ACCESS provides information, screening and referrals for Alameda County residents who need mental health and/or drug and alcohol treatment. ACCESS is answered by County licensed mental health clinicians Monday-Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm. After hours calls are returned by Alameda County Crisis Support Services. The telephone menu is in six languages: English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and Cambodian. ACCESS uses a telephone interpretation service for additional languages and California Relay for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. An Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services program.
