In many communities, November is recognized as Homelessness Awareness Month, and as such we are highlighting the state of homelessness in Fremont and ways to help! The 2022 Point in Time (PIT) Count and Survey was recently released, which showed that at least 1,000 of Fremont’s residents are experiencing homelessness, a 68% increase since 2019. Most people counted and surveyed in the PIT were unsheltered and living in vehicles. Unfortunately, within the last 3 years more people are experiencing homelessness for the first time and, because of the continued housing and shelter shortage, people are staying homeless for longer. About half of unsheltered adults have a disabling condition or chronic health issue, meaning they require more service and medical needs. Economic factors like job loss, medical bills, and increased rent are currently reported as the leading causes of homelessness. The City of Fremont continues to evaluate service options while operating programs that serve unhoused residents. It is disheartening to see neighbors living outside and one way to turn awareness into action, is volunteerism. Fremont’s Safe Parking program, which opened in January 2022, is one way to serve the community and be apart of the solution. For more information on programs serving unhoused residents, like Safe Parking go to www.fremont.gov/government/departments/human-services/homeless-care-response, or to find out how you can help, please email homelessness@fremont.gov. or call 510.574.2050.
