November is National Family Caregiver Month. Let’s take time to celebrate the efforts and selfless contribution of family caregivers in our families, neighborhood, and community. While COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to our daily activities, family caregivers remained dedicated to their loved ones, families and friends offering around the clock assistance and help needed. Although with no doubt everyone agrees that family caregivers are the most compassionate, kind, selfless and caring individuals, they need to be taken care of too. Research data continues to show large numbers of caregivers feeling isolated, anxious and even depressed. This alarming statistic is a good reminder to express appreciation to our hidden community heroes and let them know that resources are available to them in the City of Fremont, Human Services Department. The City of Fremont’s Family Caregiver Support Program provides emotional support and education to caregivers of elderly loved ones. Services offered are individual counseling in relation to caring for elderly loved ones, support groups and education in person or on line. If you are a family caregiver or know of a family caregiver in the community, please contact the Senior Information Line at 510.574.2041 to get connected with the right services.

Americans across the country will be celebrating Veterans Day on November 11. This federal holiday is set aside to pay tribute to military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Here are some ways to celebrate and honor Veterans Day: 1. A simple way to show your appreciation for veterans is to say “thank you” at any time during the year. 2. Explain to your children or family members that Veterans Day celebrates all members of the military, those currently serving and those who have served previously. 3. Visit the closest national cemetery and learn about the veteran’s life of service. 4. Get involved or donate to organizations that support veterans, such as Fisher House Foundation, Homes For Our Troops, Operation Gratitude, Operation Second Chance, Semper Fi Fund or Wounded Warrior Project. 5. Support the businesses that support our military. Many restaurants and stores offer promotions on Veterans Day or military discounts to military members and their families. Make sure to support these businesses.
World Kindness Day is an international holiday that promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself, and to the world. This day, celebrated on November 13 of each year, has the purpose to help everyone understand that compassion for others is what binds us all together.
5 ways to make kindness the norm in your daily life: 1. Send an uplifting text to a friend or family member 2. Let that person merge into traffic with a wave and a smile 3. Go slightly outside of your comfort zone at least once a day to make someone smile. 4. Share a compliment with a co-worker or friend 5. Treat someone to a cup of coffee (a friend, stranger, or even yourself!)
