Blue Zones are regions of the world in which people live longer and enjoy more years of good health. The term first appeared in a National Geographic article that highlighted demographic work done by Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain. They identified and studied the following places: Sardina, Italy; the islands of Okinawa, Japan; a group of Seventhday Adventists living in Loma Linda, California; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica and Icaria, Greece. Sequential research on these groups showed they lived in fairly isolated areas and had a somewhat related gene pool. It also uncovered that there were common lifestyle characteristics that contribute to their longevity. •

Moderate, regular physical activity incorporated into doing daily tasks. People were constantly moving.

• Individuals could identify a life purpose, as well as being open to both success and failure. Okinawans, for example utilize the concept of ikigai, meaning ‘a reason for being’. •

Blue Zone inhabitants learn to cope with stress in a healthy way.

•

Moderate caloric intake, including the concept of eating up to 80% full.

•

The majority of their diet is plant-based diet, eating meat sporadically and consuming moderate alcohol intake.

•

Blue Zone individuals engage in a strong social support and family life beginning in childhood. There is a drive for social cohesion and a strong consideration of what is best for everyone. Many of them are engaged in spirituality or religious practices.

If you are interested in living longer like those living in the Blue Zones you can visit www.bluezones.com or check out or purchase a book on the topic.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK (OCT 3–9) The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is promoting this years’ Fire Prevention Week by sharing safety tips to help you “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”. “What do the sounds mean? Is there a beep or a chirp coming out of your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm? Knowing the difference can save you, your home, and your family,” said Lorraine Carli, vice-president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA. Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety • A continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out. • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed. • All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years. • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced. •

Make sure your smoke and CO2 alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.

•

Recognizing the different sounds alarms make, and the action needed based on that sound, is critical to preventing injury and death from fire. Fire Prevention Week is a perfect time to educate and talk with your whole family about fire safety!

WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY White canes were introduced in the 1930s as a way of assisting visually impaired pedestrians to travel independently. On October 6, 1964, a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress was signed into law. This resolution authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim each October 15th “White Cane Safety Day.” In 2011, White Cane Safety Day was also named Blind Americans Equality Day by President Barack Obama. National White Cane Safety Day celebrates the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. The white cane represents the independence of those who are blind worldwide. Tip for people who are sighted: It is okay to ask a blind individual if assistance is needed. Make sure you ask them for permission before trying to assist. If the blind individual asks you to help guide them, offer your arm. They will hold your arm just above the elbow to follow your path.
