September is a fitting month to celebrate National Senior Center month. It marks the beginning of the harvest season, a time of reflection and of gathering strength alongside others to harvest what you have carefully, thoughtfully, and conscientiously sown over the course of the past year. The 41-year-old Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth has sown a great deal; more than ever imagined. Unprecedented times allowed the AWC at Lake Elizabeth to show the community how vital the services offered are to older adults’ health and wellbeing. Virtual classrooms developed out of necessity like 4 Steps to Emergency Preparedness, Ukulele, Creative Writing, Needle Crafts and Yoga which provided continued means of empowerment, community connection and activity during bleak times. Adults 55+ using Zoom and ordering meals online defied the ageist stereotypes about older adults and technology use. Take that agism! In 12 months, over 32,000 meals were produced out of the Age Well Center which included bag lunches, frozen and hot meals for older adults and other in need populations. Over 3,000 bags of free groceries were also handed out safely to older adults. COVID–19 resources were provided along with donated masks and a vaccination clinic provided by Haller’s Pharmacy was set up. This past year allowed the Center to continue to address the big issue of isolation and bring it to the forefront of the community more. Going forward the Center will take lessons learned to continue to provide enriching services and programs.
