The City of Fremont is an active member of the World Health Organization (WHO) and AARP’s Age Friendly Network. This global network has more than 1,000 cities in 44 countries and the number is growing. In fact, California just joined the network as an age-friendly state in June, the eighth state in the US to join. As an age-friendly city, we have a 5-year Action Plan that guides our efforts in 9 different domains: • Health and Wellness • Outdoor Spaces and Buildings • Transportation • Social Participation and Inclusion • Volunteering and Civic Engagement • Community Information • Employment and Learning Opportunities • Housing • Dementia-related Support We just finished our first year of the current 2020–25 plan and, while it was a challenging year, there have been gains in several areas. The completion of the second Age Well center in South Fremont is a highlight and adds a beautifully designed space for older adults to gather. We also were able to reach 14,000 individuals with information about emergency planning and completed pedestrian upgrades and grinding of uneven pathways. We look forward to the upcoming year and working towards an age-friendly community. An age-friendly city is a livable city for all.
