PROVIDING AN ENGAGING AND SAFE PLACE
Alzheimer’s Services of the East Bay (ASEB) joined the Fremont community three years ago! Participants at ASEB-Mission San Jose begin their day greeting each other while setting the table for morning tea! The staff ensure each person is greeted with a smile and they are invited to participate in a range of activities that acknowledges their strengths, likes and skills. More importantly, ASEB believes that each participant must be engaged in activities that mirror their activities of daily living while creating spaces for joy, creation and relationship.
ASEB has become the first Montessori Trained Adult Day Health Care in the United States due to funds received by the Joseph and Vera Long Foundation! The ASEB Fremont staff were trained and continue to be trained in a philosophy of care that shifts “person centered care” from doing for, to doing with. ASEB believes individuals living with dementia require us to relate, motivate and appreciate all of their strengths, while restoring meaningful engagement throughout their day. At ASEB staff always invite the participant to participate! ASEB staff talk less and demonstrate more. Montessori for aging and dementia has taught ASEB to remember that everything is an activity and an opportunity for engagement.
