JULY 2020

AN AGE-FRIENDLY CITY IS A LIVABLE CITY THE FREMONT SENIOR CENTER IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE due to COVID-19 and the Shelter In Place Order issued by the Alameda County Public Health Department. However, a number of services are still available including online FCS classes, trainings and talks! (See pages inside for details.)

Over the years many have said that 65 years of age and beyond are the Golden Years. For the past twenty years founders of www.encore.org view years after the age of 50 as a movement around pursuing second acts for the greater good. Either way, people often envision adults 50 to 65+ retiring, making their own schedule, traveling, volunteering, taking better care of your health and spending more time with family. How do older adults enjoy their Golden Years or encore years during a pandemic and a volatile political environment? There’s a lot of advice out there about how to stay healthy, like staying home and away from others, washing your hands often, keeping your hands away from your face and wearing a mask at all times when out of your home. But how do you take care of your mental health and combat isolation? To stay connected with others, it is recommended to keep in contact with family, friends and neighbors via phone. If you feel comfortable, you can even get some fresh air with someone else maintaining proper social distancing. Those who are comfortable with technology can Face Time, What’s App, Messenger Video, Zoom and use the House Party app. It’s not the same as human contact, but it does help seniors connect with others safely. If you’re starting to feel depressed, reach out to someone and let them know how you’re feeling or call the Senior Info Line at 510.574.2041 for more resources. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4 >
