MAY 2020
The Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth — formerly the Fremont Senior Center — offering online classes, services, trainings and curbside to go meals! OUR BUILDING IS CURRENTLY CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE due to COVID-19 and the Shelter In Place Order issued by the Alameda County Public Health Department.
Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads our nation’s observance of Older Americans Month. The theme for 2021 is “Communities of Strength.” Older adults have built resilience and strength over their lives through successes, failures, joys, and difficulties. This OAM, we celebrate the contributions of one of 3 founding members Shirley Sisk and Executive Director for 32 years of the non-profit, League of Volunteers (LOV). LOV has been serving the Tri City since 1979, as a response to cuts in funding to libraries and recreation facilities. As a result, LOV has been providing a free kids summer recreation program to low income children in the Tri City area ever since. Between 600–700 volunteers pitch in annually to help LOV provide more than 40 programs. Other programs provided every year are the Annual Toy Drive, Holiday Adopt a Family and Food Basket Drive, Sunday Afternoon Concert Series, Thanksgiving Meals, Emergency Food Pantry, Arts in Schools Assemblies and more! At least half of the volunteers are 55 years of age or over including the 4 staff, which includes Shirley who is 87 years young. She states that she doesn’t know what she’d be doing if she weren’t working at LOV. Despite hard work, weekends, and 13 great grandchildren, she has no desire to sit at home. Shirley has always felt compelled to serve her community, serving as a Newark City Council Member for over 22 years Other retired volunteers share her same sentiment. LOV and Shirley’s efforts show how responding to a need during challenging times, has helped make a community strong and supported and given purpose to many adults 55+.
