MAY 2020
AN AGE-FRIENDLY CITY IS A LIVABLE CITY THE FREMONT SENIOR CENTER IS CLOSED THROUGH MAY 31ST due to COVID-19 and the Shelter In Place Order issued by the Alameda County Public Health Department. However, a number of services are still available and there are eleven FCS classes available online! (See pages 2 and 3 for details.)
For 57 years we have celebrated Older American Month in May. The federal theme this year is Make Your Mark to honor the volunteerism of older adults. Our community is fortunate, we enjoy a multitude of older volunteers who help at the Senior Center as Peer Counselors, to deliver Meals on Wheels, and so much more. Right now older volunteers who are at higher risk for COVID-19 must stay home interrupting volunteer efforts. The Tri-City Elder Coalition in partnership with the Senior Commissions of Fremont, Newark and Union City was going to present Difference Maker Awards to honor older volunteers at our Spring Fling event. Unfortunately, this will have to happen at a later date. While it is challenging right now, it is important to recognize the efforts of older adults who have given so much. Now older neighbors need assistance from their remaining community. Thank you to all. Everyone can make a difference in the life of an older adult and their caregivers to make our community stronger. If you have question or need some assistance call the Aging and Family Services InfoLine at 510.574.2041. You may also contact LIFE ElderCare at 510.894.0370 or email info@LifeElderCare.org or sign up at: www.TriCityAtRisk.com if you have no other support or wish to offer assistance.

WE
VOLUNTEERS!
A Big Thank You to our Volunteer Teachers Due to Covid-19 and the shelter in place order, the FSC has been unable to offer classes online. We were compelled to come up with an alternative for adults 55+ to stay connected and active. As many know, the senior center is such a regular part of attendees’ lives. After one instructor was anxious to start a Zoom
class, Program Coordinator Nick Jordan reached out to instructors/ volunteers, asking if they’d be
interested in offering online classes using Zoom with his guidance. The volunteers showed us again how great and resilient they are by
saying Yes! We would like to extend a huge thank you to Shari Gent, Jana Sokale, Joey and Pat Tchang, Justin Go, Elaine Rodgers, Kalina Wong, Richard O’Clarke, Pramila Talisetti and James Weil. Debbie Haigler didn’t need to wait for us to ask her to host a Zoom class; she had already started one! You guys rock. If you are one of our volunteer instructors or leaders of a group and would like to offer your class or meeting online, please contact Nick Jordan at njordan@fremont.gov.
RUNNING ESSENTIAL ERRANDS
As communities across the United States take steps to slow the spread of COVID-19 by limiting close contact, people are facing new challenges and questions about how to meet basic household needs, such as buying groceries and medicine, and completing banking activities. The following information provides advice about how to meet these household needs in a safe and healthy manner. Shopping for Groceries: Stay home if you are sick, order online or for curbside pickup, wear a protecetive mask, sanitize and wash your hands before and after your visit. Accepting deliveries and takeout orders: Pay online or on the phone when you order (if possible), accept deliveries without in-person contact whenever possible, ask for deliveries to be left in a safe spot outside your house (such as your front porch or lobby), with no person-to-person interaction. Otherwise, stay at least 6 feet away from the delivery person.
Banking: Bank online whenever possible, If you must visit the bank, use the drivethrough ATM if one is available. Clean the ATM keyboard with a disinfecting wipe before you use it. When you are done, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when you get home. Getting Gasoline: Use gloves or disinfecting wipes on handles or buttons before you touch them. Use gloves or disinfecting wipes on handles and buttons before you touch them (if available). After fueling, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds when you get home or somewhere with soap and water.
Going to the Doctor or Getting medicine: Talk to your doctor online, by phone or e-mail. If you think you have COVID-19, let the office know and follow guidance. Use telemedicine, if available, or communicate with your doctor or nurse by phone or e-mail. Talk to your doctor about rescheduling procedures that are not urgently needed. If you must visit in-person, protect yourself and others. Stay at least 6 feet away from others while inside and in lines. When paying, use touchless payment methods if possible. If you cannot use touchless payment, sanitize your hands after paying with card, cash, or check. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when you get home. Plan to order and pick up all your prescriptions at the same time.
