Age-Friendly Fremont, April 2021

Page 1

The Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth — formerly the Fremont Senior Center — offering online classes, services, trainings and curbside to go meals! OUR BUILDING IS CURRENTLY CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE due to COVID-19 and the Shelter In Place Order issued by the Alameda County Public Health Department.

Winston Churchhill once said “You make a living by what you get. You make a difference by what you give.” National Volunteer Month became official in 1991. There are many people in the Tri City that choose to volunteer once a month, while others volunteer for many organizations putting in hours multiple days. Every contribution big and small make a difference at organizations like City of Fremont’s Human Services Department, Life ElderCare, Tri City Volunteers, Shinn Park, Washington Hospital and the Tri City Free Breakfast Program. What draws those who choose to volunteer to donate their time, energy and knowledge? Many say volunteering gives them purpose and allows them to meet new people. Some say since they retired, they felt lost and volunteering allowed them to choose where they wanted to be and who they wanted to help, which was a priceless feeling. Others say their town has been so good to them and they feel as though its’ their duty to give back to their town. If you volunteer, why do you? If not, can you think of a volunteer you think fondly of? The City of Fremont hope you have been touched by all the good displayed by neighbors, nonprofit organizations, government entities and strangers during these challenging times. The pandemic has sparked a new wave of volunteerism across the globe and we hope the positive energy continues for centuries to come! If you know a senior that needs support from a volunteer, please call the senior information line at 510.574.2041. If you or a family member are interested in volunteering, contact an agency you admire or go to volunteermatch.org to explore other opportunities.

VOLUNTEERS — STILL SHINING THE LIGHT

The Age Well Center would like to thank every single volunteer. Their hard work, dedication and love for adult 55+ is appreciated. Many volunteers have not been able to volunteer for the past few years. We miss them! All feel the void left by this integral part of our community. Our front office volunteers are helpful and accomodating to the public. The kitchen volunteers that help prepare and serve delicious meals. The volunteer instructors that keep us moving and thinking with our wide variety of offerings. The volunteer trip leaders that ensure we’re safe and have fun on day trips. The host or hostess that greets patrons with a smile as you enter our center. The tax preparers, the mature driving teachers, the senior commissioners and all other volunteers that help the center stand out amongst all centers in the world. Volunteers truly make the Age Well Center special and create positive life moments for the community. As we venture into 2021, staff are looking forward to the day volunteers can return to serving the Tri City area. The past twelve months have been difficult, but it has also given us a chance to slow down and reflect. Optimism remains for the future that lies ahead with volunteers remaining the back bone of the AWC!

MORE SCRUTINY FOR AGE DISCRIMINATION Historically age discrimination has been difficult to prove. In a recent case the 3rd Circuit of Appeals overturned the lower courts’ decision. This action may be a sign that companies will face increased accountability for age discrimination. Adults 65 and older make up a greater percentage of the population than 18 and under. Not only that, people are living longer, healthier lives — even during a pandemic. Employment is important to maintain a

comfortable standard of living and a sense of wellbeing. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) published new information on behavior and language that may demonstrate systemic discrimination. With a new administration in the White House and a plan to elevate diversity, equity, and inclusion, age will become an important focus for employment and labor cases. Hope is in the air that employers not already on notice will take notice and action.

RADIO STATION ENGAGES SENIOR RESIDENTS At the start of the pandemic Resident Services Coordinator Monica Gloria created and conducted a technology survey for the residents of Pauline Weaver Senior Apartments to gauge whether there was interest in learning how to use technology. It was also asked whether residents would want to participate in activities if they were conducted on an online platform like Zoom. Results were disheartening, but where there’s a will there’s a way. After a more targeted follow up survey, it was decided that radio would be the best way to engage residents safely. Since February of this year, Resident Services offers exercise, informational community meetings, health presentations hosted by On Lok and Bingo at Pauline Weaver. Residents tune into a preset station dedicated to engagement and connection and the response has been a positive one. During the live broadcast residents can even call in, ask questions and have them answered on the spot. Who said radio was dead? One size never fits all and listening to what works for the community you serve, will always be mainstream in the City of Fremont Human Services Department! P.06 | 04.21 AGE-FRIENDLY FREMONT
