Decades of research suggests that the quality of our social ties might be the single biggest predictor of our well-being. Humans are just wired to be social creatures! But it doesn’t always just happen — it is a skill you can cultivate. You sometimes hear about social connections being ‘social capital’, which allows individuals to work together on a common purpose. Each of us can increase our personal social capital account by providing to others.
The Human Services Department has invested in developing volunteer activities, including the award-winning Community Ambassador Program for Seniors (CAPS). CAPS has trained over 250 volunteers in how to support older adults with information on resources and services. CAPS volunteers receive on-going training, attend monthly meetings, and participate by sharing information with their communities, religious/cultural groups, social networks, and at special events.
The Senior Peer Counselor (SPC) program has been supporting the emotional needs of older adults for 30 years. Becoming a SPC is a serious commitment, yet our current SPC report that they get back more than they give. Both CAPS and SPC programs are offering orientations to their programs this Spring. Now is the time to re-engage!
The Age Well Centers are a front door to community connections and activities: take a class; meet new people; learn a new activity or come have a healthy and delicious lunch at one of our cafes. Both Centers have volunteer opportunities in our kitchens, offices, or for special events.
To learn more about CAPS, contact Marisha Engineer at mengineer@fremont.gov, for SPC reach out to Ahmad Tarin at atarin@fremont.gov, and to learn more about our Age Well Centers, stop by and take a tour and talk to staff about your interests!
