RE–SIL–IENCE

the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. Developing resilience involves an interconnected series of thoughts, attitudes, behaviors and actions that can, if employed properly, help us cope with life’s various stressful events. Resilience is rooted in the understanding that change is inevitable. It is how we think about change, how we receive it, how we position ourselves towards it. What actions we take to harness it that makes all the difference. Resilience starts from understanding and accepting that change is a part of our lives. Then it is strengthened through our behaviors and actions in the light of this acceptance. Resilience is defined as the ability to bounce back from adversity or circumstances that produce a great amount of anxiety and stress. It always involves growth from and through experience. This growth is made possible by a combination of effective and positive coping strategies. When we face a stressful event, the first step to take is to find out whether the problem is changeable or unchangeable. If the issue happens to be changeable, we can then take a problem-focused approach by thinking of steps to solve the problem. This might include making a plan, brainstorming, learning more and taking action. On the other hand, if we find ourselves facing an unchangeable situation, we can try the emotion-focused approach which means trying something to feel better in spite of the unyielding problem. Emotion-focused approach involves powerful tools such as deep breathing, meditation, talking to someone we trust about the problem, mindfulness practice, prayer, use of humor, exercising, journaling or writing about it and most importantly feeling belongingness and social connectedness.
