FEBRUARY 2022
Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth
Age Well Center at South Fremont
Heart disease is one of the most widespread and complicated health challenges faced in the US. As a result, February has been dedicated as heart health month. BACH’s (Bay Area Community Health) Clinical Director, Dr. Gemma Jamena, MD offers the following tips to improve our heart health: From pandemic to the great resignation, the evolving political and actual climate, 2021 had its share of heartbreaks. As a result, protecting one’s heart literally and figuratively has become more important in the majority of the population as we start 2022. Though our personal control over things only extends to our fingertips, this amount of power to effect change is still significant. Choose to focus on the following: •
Remove nicotine from your body, which constricts your blood vessels and quit smoking today.
•
Say no to that extra dash of salt in your next meal.
•
Exercise 15—20 minutes today aiming for a 150 minutes per week.
•
Ask your medical provider about your blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiac risk and if aspirin and/or statins are right for you.
•
Start sleep 10—11 pm for optimized sleep.
•
Manage stress with box breathing, mindfulness and unplugging from toxic media.
All these small choices have power — just repeat with consistency. Medicine has given us tools to help treat blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes — the triad that affects cardiovascular health significantly. Yet, we should not belittle the effect of healthy life choices. All these are heart protective steps that do not require a pill. You can safeguard your heart and it can start today. Go ahead, let’s make it happen. Your heart will thank you. BACH collaborates with the Age Well Centers by sending staff to both centers to conduct free blood pressure testing. Please come by to get your test!

THE AGE WELL CENTERS WILL NOT HOST AARP TAX ASSISTANCE THIS SEASON
The AARP Tax-Aide team will not be able to offer on-site tax preparation services this tax season. Unfortunately, a combination of COVID-19 based requirements result in not having enough willing volunteer preparers and leaders to operate AARP Tax-Aide sites in Southern Alameda County. To assist taxpayers with their tax preparation needs, alternative free services for this coming season are available. The most comprehensive resource to find open sites is the IRS’ Site Locator at: http://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/ Call Fremont Vita Free Tax Preparation at 510.574.2020 or visit https://www. fremontvita.org to make an appointment to get your taxes prepared. In addition, both AARP Tax-Aide and United Way of the Bay Area (UWBA) offer tax preparation assistance for taxpayers with computer skills who are willing to prepare their own returns with guidance from a coach over the phone:

GALENTINE’S DAY
Everyone knows about Valentine’s Day, but have you heard about Galentine’s Day? Galentine’s Day is an unofficial holiday and a relatively new phenomenon focused on celebrating all the spectacular girls and women in your life. Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day. The holiday is all about declaring love and affection to the girls who make up our support system, whether they are single or not. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate: • Host a brunch outside or go to a restaurant that has outdoor dining. • Gather your friends for a wine-and-cheese happy hour. • Cook a meal together or virtually. • Engage in retail therapy at an outdoor mall or flea market. • Have a group mani-pedi appointment. It’s your Galentine’s Day and you can celebrate however you want! AGE-FRIENDLY FREMONT 02.22 | P.09

WE
VOLUNTEERS!
CAPS (Community Ambassador Program for Seniors) is recruiting and training new volunteers this spring. If you are interested in learning about community resources and supporting Older Adults in your neighborhood, religious center, cultural group, or anywhere you engage, come join us! Contact Marisha Engineer, MSW at mengineer@fremont.gov or 510.574.2063 with questions about CAPS or for specifics about the training.
The Senior Peer Counseling Program is also looking for volunteers to join its team! Senior Peer Counselors assist Tri-City seniors, facing moderate mental health issues. Trained volunteers, who understand the challenges of aging, provide counseling and emotional support both in the home or in our counseling offices. This program is supervised by a licensed professional therapist. Interested? Contact Ahmad Tarin at atarin@fremont.gov or 510.574.2064.
The AWC at Lake Elizabeth was overjoyed to reopen it’s doors with a modified schedule July 2021 after we were optimistic about the pandemic winding down. Since July of 2021, the Lake Side Cafe which operates out of the Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth served almost 9,00 meals to adults 55+ and almost 3,000 to our unsheltered neighbors. The Center also handed out 2,880 grocery bags in partnership with Tri-City Volunteers. Additionally, we provided classes in person, live via Zoom, along with presentations/trainings, a chronic pain support group and health services. Our newsletter Age-Friendly Fremont, continues to keep our community informed and up-to-date on available community resources for older adults. For 41 years we have been a trusted place that provides opportunities for older adults to remain active, engaged, informed and supported. Now more than ever we need you to help make our annual fundraiser a major success! All proceeds will be used to support the Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth’s Lake Side Cafe that feeds so many affordably or free during the pandemic. Dinner will be excellent as our talented chefs treat you to fresh crab, garlic butter, pasta, breadsticks, salad, and dessert in a reusable tote, that will be safely placed in your trunk. While you wait in your car, live music will be played and random prizes will be awarded to 15 lucky cars. You can pick up your meals on Friday February 18 from 12.00pm to 1.30pm.
