Kitten Season! Pages 6-7

Christy
Summer has arrived in South Florida, bringing longer days, warmer temperatures and an important reminder for all pet owners: hydration is essential. Just as we take extra precautions to stay cool during the hottest months of the year, our pets depend on us to ensure they always have access to fresh, clean water and a safe place to escape the heat. A little extra attention can make a tremendous difference in keeping our beloved companions healthy and comfortable throughout the summer.
At the Humane Society of Broward County, summer also marks the height of kitten season. Each year vulnerable kittens arrive at our shelter needing specialized care before they are ready for adoption. Many are too young to eat on their own, and require bottle feeding around the clock. That is why foster volunteers are so important to our lifesaving mission. If you have ever considered opening your home and heart to an animal in need, I encourage you to visit the Volunteer section of our website to learn more about fostering opportunities. The gift of your time can truly save lives.
As another remarkable fundraising season comes to a close, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported our events, campaigns and programs. Thanks to
your generosity this was one of the most successful fundraising seasons in our organization’s history. Your support allows us to provide shelter, medical care, enrichment and second chances for thousands of animals each year.
While our signature events may be behind us for the season, the needs of the animals continue every day. The Humane Society of Broward County relies on year-round philanthropy to sustain our work. If you are looking for a meaningful way to honor a loved one, celebrate a special occasion, or create a lasting legacy, please consider making an honor donation or exploring one of the shelter’s naming opportunities. These thoughtful gifts help ensure that animals in need receive the care and compassion they deserve.
Thank you for believing in our mission and for helping us create a more humane community for animals and the people who love them. Together we are giving hope, healing and happy endings every single day.

Warm regards,

animals need your help, and we don’t want your mailing to be interrupted! The Humane Society of Broward County directly receives
What better way to kick off Adopt a Cat Month in June than a visit from Florida Panthers mascots Stanley C. Panther and Viktor E. Ratt, along with some of the Panthers Dance Team?! There were plenty of smiles, purrs and cuddles to go ‘round as the crew visited with our adoptable kitties. Pet Health Works provided a go-home gift box of goodies for 30 of the felines, with a total of 237 cats finding new homes in June.

There are many future veterinarians in our Teen Animal Care Volunteer program, and we try to do our part to nurture their interest in veterinary medicine. Five teens who showed particular responsibility, dedication and compassion for the animals in this program were invited to a behind-the-scenes experience of shadowing our doctors and vet techs for a day. The teens saw firsthand what it’s like to care for shelter animals by observing live surgeries, medical checks, vaccine administration and much more. We hope this is a first step in their bright veterinary careers!

Fetch Pet Insurance recently garnered the Newsweek Reader’s Choice Award for best pet insurance. That says a lot about customer satisfaction! HSBC adopters are among those happy customers, as everyone is given the opportunity to sign up their new family member for Fetch Pet Insurance at the time of adoption.
Being humane means showing kindness, something we want our visitors to feel the moment they arrive at our shelter. Our Kindness Garden, created with the help of our campers, volunteers and staff, welcomes guests with colorful rocks promoting compassion, caring and happiness. Help us grow the garden and spread a little joy by painting a kindness rock at home and bringing it in to add to our collection.

When the band Goose played at Fort Lauderdale’s War Memorial Auditorium in April, a special Snuggle Delivery was arranged for the crew and band. Six adorable pups visited pre-concert to provide plenty of wags and cuddles. Pictured is Goose drummer Cotten Ellis with a furry friend.
Dexter and Maxim Lam, middle-schoolers from American Heritage School in Plantation, formed a nonprofit so they would sound more professional when asking businesses in the community for donations. Recently they came by the shelter to present Humane Education Coordinator, Darlene Feldman, with a check for $500!
The two are also starting an Animal Club when school begins in August. In addition to all this, the dedicated team, along with mom, provides foster care for our puppies and kittens.

Fort Lauderdale Magazine readers voted, and the HSBC is the 2026 Gold winner for the Best Animal Shelter/ Rescue. We’re also the Bronze winner for the Best Place to volunteer. We are grateful to our community for the support and confidence they place in our efforts.

We’re happy to report the following new homes found during March, April and May 2026:
Each year hundreds of students contact our Education Department, inquiring about getting service hours for school while also helping the homeless animals in our care. One example is Harper Minto from St. Marks Episcopal School, who made several fleece blankets for our dogs and cats. Instructions for the projects listed below can be found at humanebroward.com under the “Youth Programs” tab.
Scratching Pad
Cats need to scratch. It relieves stress, removes old claw sheaths, and just feels good to them. Scratching also relieves boredom for kitties while they are here at the shelter.
One scratching pad = two hours of community service.
No-Sew Fleece Blankets
Make blankets for the shelter animals to use as they wait for a home. One large blanket or two small blankets = two hours of community service.

Friends of Animals members
Sandy Maloney and Cindy Libero enjoyed volunteering their time at the event.

Ani’s dog Luna enjoyed meeting the campers at this special book reading.
Toy
Toys help to keep the animals from getting bored while they wait for a new home. They wear out quickly and need to be replaced constantly, so they are the perfect item to collect from friends and family. The toys that work best can be easily washed: large rubber toys for dogs, small mouse toys and plastic balls for cats, and chew sticks for rabbits. The dogs love long-lasting chew bones like bully sticks and yak bones (no rawhides please).
This is a donation drive to collect specific items from our extensive wish list. The forms, wish list, and instructions can be found in the Student Donation Drive Packet on our website.
Student Fundraiser
Fundraisers bring in money that helps us to provide the animals with the care they need. The forms and instructions on how to create a fundraising webpage can be found in the Student Personal Campaign Packet on our website.

Meeting monthly at the shelter, our Friends of Animals Club is a group of animal-loving adults that spends time with the animals, creates crafts, holds fundraisers, and enjoys socializing. A recent fundraiser was their annual spring Plant Sale, held at the shelter in April. Members of our Teen Club joined in by preparing and selling food to attendees, while Friends of Animals members sold plants and related items. A few vendors were also present.
Local author Ani Kojian held a special reading of her new book Luna and Mikey: FURever Friends for both our Kids Club and our Summer Camp this season. Her book is about embracing differences, unlikely friendships, love, and acceptance. Following the reading, Ani surprised the kids by having Luna and Mikey, her rescued dogs, come out to meet them! Ani also very kindly donated a dozen copies of her book to the HSBC’s two reading programs, Wags & Tales and Animal Buddies.
Plants were donated by In Living Color, Flamingo Nurseries, several club members, and other HSBC volunteers. Home Depot provided a gift card that was used to purchase raffle items--two beautiful orchid arrangements. The event raised almost $3,000 for the shelter animals. For information about joining the Friends of Animals Club, contact Darlene at dfeldman@hsbroward.com.

Our Summer Camp sessions are always a huge hit with kids (and parents!) and the seven weeks of camp book up quickly. Tailored for specific age groups from six years to teenagers, each day promises a new adventure as the kids learn all sorts of things about animals. Some favorite activities are playing with the animals (of course), dressing up in animal career fashions, and making tiny houses for the animals.

In our first session this summer, the kids came up with a fashion show modeling outfits that people who work with animals might wear. We loved the creativity they showed! They also presented to the other campers, each talking about what their job entails.
A chicken presentation, given for the

Cfirst time ever this summer, was thoroughly enjoyed by both the presenter, longtime volunteer Pierrette Bettex, and the campers. Pierrette brought in a pair of her young chickens for the kids to meet; needless to say, they were enthralled! The kids even got to name them.
HSBC’s Summer Camp is a fabulous way for children to learn, grow, and appreciate the animal world around them. We’ve watched plenty of animalloving children start at the youngest session and “graduate” as teenagers years later. The rewards are many for all involved.
e recently held our first two puppy yoga classes for families, and it was a very popular event with more than 50 participants! The morning session puppy group taking part was a calm, eager bunch and the curious pups visited each attendee. For the noon session, the pups were not sure what was going on at first and were a bit reserved. But once they saw the opportunity to run through the class, they did so, slowing down for brief pets and snuggles and then proceeding to be the class clowns, stealing shoes and…well, being puppies! (TJ the Education bunny greeted guests before class but declined taking part in the puppy madness.)
ameron Katz has a special fondness for the HSBC, having celebrated two birthdays with parties at the shelter and attending camp three times. His family also adopted a dog and two Guinea pigs! When it came time for his Mitzvah project, Cameron continued his HSBC connection by holding a donation drive to benefit our animals. He collected many items, as well as funds, from friends and family in honor of his Bar Mitzvah.
If you’re looking for a Mitzvah project that helps the animals, contact Darlene at 954.266.6838 or dfeldman@hsbroward.com.

Our family yoga classes are designed for all ages and skill levels, combining light movement, stretching, mindfulness, and plenty of puppy cuddles. It’s the perfect opportunity to bond as a family, de-stress, and support homeless animals in need. The cost is $35 per person, and we ask for at least one parent or guardian per two children. Children must be six years or older. Our next session is on September 21 at 10 a.m. and noon. Visit our website at humanebroward. com under the Events tab to register.

Spring and summer are “kitten season,” when shelters across the country see kitten intakes rise sharply. Between the months of April and July we will admit 600 to 800 kittens under the age of two months. Fortunately, we have a foster program that makes it possible for us to manage these numbers and care for the kittens until they are old enough for adoption, although we are always in need of fosters that are willing to bottle feed. Currently we have 150 foster families that care for kittens, and since January 1 of this year, 350 young felines have spent time in a foster home.
Following is useful information if you find a litter of kittens:
Watch – if you do not see the mother cat, she may be away in search of food.
• From a safe distance, if they seem to be content or sleeping, keep an eye on them for a few hours or even up to a full day.

Ideally, kittens should weigh two pounds before they can go up for adoption. Still too small, this group awaits pickup by a foster volunteer.

At just a few days
Kittens become very active and vocal when hungry, so if they are sleeping, mom is most likely still taking care of them.
• If you cannot stay and watch, sprinkle a circle of flour around them and check back later to see if there are paw prints showing that mama cat has visited.
• Kittens under four weeks old are fully reliant on their mother’s milk and have a much higher chance of survival if they are left with her until they are older.
Are they in immediate danger?
• Are they next to the street, in a drain, or in other locations that pose immediate concern?
• Check to see if the kittens appear unhealthy – skinny, excessive crying, limping, or any obvious injuries.

After having their bottles of kitten milk replacer, these little ones stay warm in an incubator.

Bud and Tree were discovered alone in a recycling bin. The finder fostered them until they were big enough to be brought to the shelter and placed for adoption.
How to intervene or help:
• You can care for the kittens in your home if you feel that they are in danger or have been abandoned. Very young kittens require round-the-clock care and most shelters do not have the staff or foster support to provide for them all.
• Some shelters can help provide supplies and education if you are willing to try and care for them yourselves, but will have to deny intake.
• If the kittens are older than four weeks, you can bring them into your home to raise them until eight weeks of age so that they are socialized and able to be adopted.
• Kittens this age can be weaned using a mix of wet food and kitten formula for a few days. Most will begin to eat wet food, then progress to hard food.

Very young kittens require syringe feeding to start them off.
• Do not use milk from other animals (cow or goat) as they are not nutritionally correct. Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR) can be purchased instead.
• If the kittens appear to be eight weeks old, you can catch them and bring them in for spay/neuter, vaccinations, and potential adoption. Their adoptability will be determined by how social they are with humans.
• You could help provide food and water for mom and kittens, and develop a relationship so that you can trap/cage them when the time comes for vaccines and spay/neuter.
• If you would like to help HSBC support orphaned neonate kittens and puppies, please join our foster program. We are always in need of homes to help raise animals until they are old enough for adoption. We provide all necessary education, supplies, and veterinary care while they are in foster.

A nutritious slurry of kitten gruel helps little ones transition from bottle to solid food.
The HSBC continually emphasizes the importance of spaying and neutering as the solution in the ongoing battle against pet overpopulation. We dedicate a significant portion of our resources to these procedures for shelter animals, and in community aspects as well. In April, along with multiple shelters in the region, we participated in a Regional TNR Event. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the most humane and effective method for managing community cat populations; it involves trapping, neutering, vaccinating, and returning the cats to their original habitat. Our team completed an astounding 63 surgeries in just one day, contributing to a regional total of 813 surgeries! This huge effort will prevent the births of thousands of kittens that could have ended up in shelters over the coming months.
Here are items that we are especially in need of for both our foster and shelter kittens. Scan the QR code to see other items needed for our foster animals.

Clinic staff Karitza Ortiz and Kenny Zayas check a foster return to get her ready for adoption.

Our years-long partnership with Nova Southeastern University brings the comfort of therapy dogs to campus at least once a month. This connection with the students, faculty, and staff has a meaningful impact on the lives of so many! In addition to these regular visits, we are sometimes invited to support special initiatives as well. Recently the College of Psychology welcomed several of our AAT teams as part
of a study measuring students’ levels of cortisol—the hormone associated with stress—before and after pet therapy sessions. We’ve always known our therapy dogs have a positive

Himpact, and now the research is helping to demonstrate those benefits as well.

SBC’s new Animal Assisted Wellness classes have been creating a meaningful and “pawsitive” impact in the community! We’ve successfully hosted our first sessions of Mindful Paws, Puppy Yoga, and Healing Paws Chakra Flow. The response has been overwhelming, and a few adoptions have even come about directly from the classes.
Through gentle low-impact yoga, mindfulness practices, and sound, the common goal of the sessions is to support overall well-being while fostering the healing bond between people and animals to bring a sense of lightness, connection, and joy. Each class is designed for the participant to move at their own pace. Check our website at humanebroward.com for upcoming sessions.

SOur Animal Assisted Wellness program brings a unique and furry fun factor to sessions of Mindful Paws, Puppy Yoga, and Healing Paws Chakra Flow.
everal of our therapy teams were delighted to support the nurses at Broward Health Coral Springs during their Nurses Week celebration in May. Because nursing is an incredibly demanding and high-stress profession, taking a few moments to indulge in canine cuddles brings a well-deserved break. And plenty of smiles.

Sadie, Ammo, and Baxter, along with a therapy dog from another program, brought their A-game to Broward Health Coral Springs.
Lise and Bingo have been making a positive difference in the community ever since joining our Animal Assisted Therapy program in June of 2023. This dynamic and dedicated team stays busy with multiple volunteer jobs! They make weekly visits to Fort Lauderdale International Airport where they help travelers unwind; they brighten the days of young patients at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital; and they conduct sessions of our Wags & Tales reading program at both the Hollywood and Stirling Road Libraries. Lise and Bingo are a treasured part of our pet therapy program, and we are so grateful to have them on our team.

he Humane Society of Broward County celebrated an unforgettable evening in April at the annual PAWS Gala, Under the Tuscan Moon, presented by Donald & Michelle Sussman, raising a record-breaking amount of more than $470,000 to benefit the shelter’s lifesaving programs and services. Chaired by Danielle Gaudreau and Margaret Meldeau and hosted at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa, the elegant event transported guests to the beauty and charm of Tuscany for a magical night dedicated to helping animals in need.
The evening began with a lively cocktail reception featuring live entertainment, signature cocktails, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and an exciting silent auction filled with unique experiences, luxury items, and exclusive packages. Attendees also had the opportunity to purchase prize drawing tickets for the chance to win a stunning Roberto Coin Princess Flower Diamond Necklace in 18k Gold, generously donated by J.R. Dunn Jewelers. The lucky winner of the exquisite necklace was Calvin Hwang.
Guests then entered a stunning ballroom transformed into an enchanting Tuscaninspired setting. The program opened with a breathtaking performance by award-winning tenor Carlos De Antonis, who captivated the audience with his powerful voice and beautiful opera selections. Honorary emcee, Jacey Birch, then welcomed guests and helped guide the evening’s festivities.
Guests also had the unique opportunity to have personalized AI-generated fashion sketches created onsite. The interactive experience quickly became a guest favorite, providing attendees with a one-of-a-kind keepsake to remember the magical evening.
Another highlight of the Gala was the energetic live auction led by auctioneer Whitney Dutton. The excitement continued during the heartfelt “Give from the Heart” paddle raise, where guests generously lifted their paddles in support of the animals. The paddle raise generated more support than ever before, demonstrating the community’s incredible compassion and commitment to the Humane Society’s mission.
Guests were also introduced to Theo, a lovable four-legged friend searching for his forever home. Theo served as a touching reminder of why the evening was so important and how every donation directly supports HSBC’s important programs and services, helping Theo and thousands of other homeless animals receive shelter, medical care, and the opportunity to find loving homes.
The festivities continued well into the evening as guests filled the dance floor and enjoyed the high-energy entertainment of The Legacy Live band, bringing an extraordinary night

of philanthropy and celebration to a memorable close.
Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, donors, attendees, volunteers, and committee members, this year’s PAWS Gala was a tremendous success, making a meaningful impact on the HSBC and the thousands of animals who rely on our care and compassion each year.

Our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party, held in May at Anne Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood, celebrated the group with an ocean theme and the tagline “An Ocean of Gratitude to Our Volunteers!”
We try and show our deep appreciation to our volunteers on a daily basis, but once a year we go all-out with a party that we hope communicates to them how very thankful we are for all they do. Our staff works hard to organize and execute an event that is full of good food, fun, recognition and some silliness thrown in for good measure.
Linda Sanders, Director of Volunteer Services, opened with a thank-you to the 130 attendees and a recognition of volunteers who have donated their time for 25 years or more(!!). Then there were all sorts of sea-themed games with prizes, including Name that Tune, a Hot Beach Balls competition, and the highly competitive Sea Turtle Scavenger Hunt, to name just a few.

Food, cocktails, and desserts (including the artistic MOJO donuts) were enjoyed by all.
Prizes were awarded to the best-dressed guests, and there was stiff competition among them! The winners were David Hoenig for craziest, Amanda Richter for fishiest, and Cindy Libero for most ocean-like. There was also a prize drawing for a 50” television, won by Sara DeMolina, and other prizes from generous donors including Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor, K1 Speed, Royal India Restaurant, Cooper’s Hawk, William Christant & Sons’ Old Florida Book Shop, Trader Joe’s, and more.
The afternoon concluded with the “go-homes” of the jellyfish centerpieces, which were adopted out to one lucky winner at each table, adoption certificate and all. We hope our volunteers left feeling happy and deeply appreciated.

They’re the heartbeat of the HSBC, active in every aspect of our mission. Pictured is just a small sampling of our amazing volunteers!

From Stephanie Rodgers, CPDT
Providing an interesting and interactive experience for your pet is extremely important for their mental health. Enrichment is also a great way to keep them from discovering and practicing behaviors you don’t want such as digging, excessive barking, or chewing inappropriate items in your house and yard. The environment in your home is probably catered somewhat to your dog’s needs and by providing comfort, safety, and play, your pet’s life is already enriching and interesting. The environment of a shelter animal, however, lacks the comforts of a home.
At the HSBC we strive every day to provide enrichment for the animals we care for here in the shelter. We have been very fortunate to be able to redesign one of our outdoor exercise areas to be more fun and engaging and, so far, the dogs are loving the experience. While we are still in the process of completing the project, a big addition has been playground equipment that the dogs can climb on, under, or around if they choose. This project was made possible in part through a generous grant from the ASPCA.
Our outside spaces are used daily to allow dogs to exercise, sniff the smells, lie in the sun, or play in the baby pools. Over the past several years we have invested in the importance of environmental enrichment for the animals, from multiple volunteer programs that give the animals the one-on-one attention they need, to daily activities specifically designed to relieve stress and anxiety. Simply being out of their kennel space for a short period of time has been shown to reduce cortisol levels in dogs by up to 70%! Cortisol is a stress hormone and, while some stress is not harmful, chronic and/or excessive levels of stress can lead to diminished mental health.

The playground equipment we have added is specially designed for dogs, to benefit them in various ways. It gives an animal the choice to simply explore or to actively interact; having this choice, alone, is a good way to reduce stress. The equipment also allows for different configurations so we can provide different experiences to keep things fresh. The bold colors are easier for dogs to see and are more attractive, as they see color differently than we do. The material is durable and easy to clean, ensuring the safety of both the dogs and the humans that they interact with. The interactive aspect of this activity is critical in all of our programs, and we have many volunteers and staff that are busy walking, training, or simply playing with the dogs and allowing them to express species-specific behaviors--in other words, letting a dog be a dog!
Other ways we provide enrichment for our animals:
• Interesting toys with many shapes, sizes and colors. Soft toys to snuggle with and chew toys to keep them busy.
• Blankets and bedding: raised platform beds allow dogs to be off the hard floor; soft bedding provides warmth and comfort.
• Bioacoustics--music designed to reduce stress and anxiety.
• Consistent exercise that is structured and interactive.
• Training. This mental stimulation allows animals to turn down the part of the brain that processes emotions such as fear and anxiety, and turn up the part of the brain that is responsible for task-solving. Training games are a good brain workout!

April 13 offered a typically gorgeous spring day for the 13th annual Big Dog Men’s Golf Tournament at Fort Lauderdale Country Club, where 128 golfers took part in a sell-out day of fun and competition. Co-Chairs David Vivies and Josh Renick, and Honorary Chairs Dave Lamont and Wil Shriner, announced a net total of more than $80,000 raised for our many programs and services.
Melody Saleh, who founded the event in 2013, was on hand to help out and to enjoy the continuing Big Dog success. And while some aspects of the tournament are typical to such events--the silent auction, various on-course contests, cocktail and beer competitions, an awards dinner—the HSBC’s adoptable puppy play area always stands out uniquely! One of these pups even scored a new home that day. Speaking of wins, the Best in Brew winner for beer was Tarpon River Brewing, and The Wilder/Rhythm & Vine won Best in Show for its featured cocktail.

Sponsors included Presenting Sponsor BrightView; Cat’s Meow Sponsors Josh Renick and David Vivies; Kitty Clubhouse Sponsors Connected Business Solutions, Drew James Salons, Fifth Third Private Bank, Gulf Building, Gunster, Hargrave Custom Yachts, The Marshall Family, Raymond James, and Ali & Melody Saleh; Event Sponsors ASINET, Inc., Club Car, Hospitality Purchasing, The Macmillan Family, Maserati of Fort Lauderdale, RealAuction.com, Southeast Mechanical Service, Weiss Serota Helfman Cole + Bierman, and Romie and Luna Wellner.
This year’s tournament held a special place in our hearts as we honored the memory of Cherie Marshall, whose longtime leadership, dedication, and generosity helped make the Big Dog Men’s Golf Tournament the success it is today. Her love for animals and dedication to the Humane Society of Broward County will be remembered for years to come.
Taking home the Big Dog trophies were: 1st Place - BrightView Foursome (Zachary Chapel, Odell Moreno, Derek Reynolds, and Charles Gonzalez); 2nd Place - Weiss Serota Helfman Cole + Bierman Foursome (Steven Osber, Ed Soto, Alan Fertel, and Kevin Fertel); and 3rd Place - Connected Business Solutions (Nick Carrasco, Eduardo Ayala, Rich Walker, and Ronald Martinez).

Iadopted Zelda there 4 years ago at age 2. There was a gal who worked there up front named Rachel, who introduced me to Zelda and knew what a good and deserving dog she was. Zelda had just had surgery on both hips, a litter of puppies, and was very skinny. I had just lost another dog and was very emotional that day. Thank goodness you saved her with surgery and rescue opportunities. She found the perfect home with me.

Zelda (behind) and Ross
Zelda gets daily walks, homemade treats, and has a big yard. She is my constant companion and a great dog. We added Ross, another small, rescued male, to our family about 10 months ago and they are the best of friends. Totally bonded. I wanted you to know what a happy ending it’s all turned out to be. Thank you for helping the animals. It means a lot.
Zelda and I rescued each other. If Rachel is still there I’d be grateful if you’d share with her.
Thanks for everything, Kerry Jamison Hollywood
We adopted Polo from your shelter in October 2011. He was euthanized on April 3rd, 2 days after his 15th birthday, due to his hips and legs degenerating to the point he was in constant pain. On behalf of my family, I want to thank you for bringing him into our lives.
John Loftus

Hi Everyone!
Thanks to you we met our fur baby Daisy, the biggest blessing we’ve ever had. She makes our days better and has brought so much joy to our home. Every day with her is a gift and we are so grateful for her and for you.
She finished antibiotic treatment for the heartworms and made her first visit to VCA. They took stool samples and she had 2 other types of worms, but they gave us medication which she has already taken. Her stool looks healthy and she’s gained some weight. We are going to schedule the next step to get rid of the heartworms.

She loves Huizenga Park and she loves to swim at Snyder Park. (We’re trying not to get her too excited or do physical activity to keep her heart safe, but we wanted her to have some fun before the treatment. We read that she is going to have to stay quiet for 2 months to avoid side effects.)
Again, thank you so, so much!!!
Best, Elizabeth, Lucas & Daisy
Arrow was a transfer from a crowded rural shelter in Florida where adoptions are scarce: Hi,

Pepper was with us for over a month before her video was posted to our social media accounts. It had two million views across Facebook and Instagram, and she was adopted within a day! Pepper now lives happily in Deerfield Beach.

Hn December 13 while scrolling through Instagram I came across a video of Lucia, a 7-month-old Staffordshire Terrier. It was love at first sight. Just five months earlier, we had lost our beloved Pickles and were still carrying that heartbreak. But there was something about Lucia (now Dallas) and her story that touched my heart. I filled out the adoption application online and tried to get some sleep. The next morning, we headed straight to meet her…and it was also love at first sight for my husband. From that moment on, there was no question - Dallas was meant to be part of our family!
Six months later, she has been our healer, our cuddle bug, our source of endless laughter, and yes, our wonderfully crazy dog. We wouldn’t change a single thing about her.
We recently celebrated her first birthday, and our hearts are fuller because she’s in our lives. As for Cupcake, our senior Beagle...the jury is still out on how she feels about her energetic little sister. Adopting Dallas was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

Three-year-old Princess lost her home because the landlord said no pets were allowed. Happily, once her video was posted on our social media it garnered an amazing five million views on Facebook and Instagram, which lead to her adoption four days later. Deborah and her husband drove across the state from Port Charlotte to bring Princess home.
ere are some update photos on how Milo (Olaf) is doing in his new life. He has been an absolute joy and the perfect addition to our pack. He even likes the cats! His personality is really starting to show. Milo LOVES pack walks with his sister Molly and brother Mateo. I can’t thank you guys enough for helping bring this lil bundle of joy into our lives. Milo Kelpi Ellis thanks you as well!!!

Heavy rains in the Caribbean island country of Dominica caused major flooding which resulted in landslides affecting St. Nicholas Animal Rescue (SNAR), a group we have assisted in the past. They care for hundreds of animals, some found severely abused, and all facing little to no adoption potential on the island. With the access road to their hillside shelter wiped out, SNAR needed help getting dogs and cats from the shelter to temporary housing prior to a planned Freedom Flight. Volunteers worked for days carrying animals down the slippery hillsides to safety. Then the trucks that were to bring the animals to the airport in the middle of the night never showed up. Frantic phone calls at 3:00 a.m. roused people from their beds; animal-loving locals came through with trucks and helping hands.
Staff from eight Florida organizations waited in Miami for the 90 dogs and 30 cats whose final destinations included not just Florida but New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania. HSBC received 12 dogs and one cat. Aged six months to eight years, the animals checked through our clinic and were ready for adoption. While they await new homes, they enjoy all the benefits of an HSBC “guest” – including air conditioning! Healthy food was also new to them, as the dogs had primarily been fed rice.
Our staff are ensuring that potential adopters understand these animals will need extra time to acclimate to their new surroundings and lifestyle. With patience, understanding and love, we have no doubt these island girls and boys will become valued family members.

All set for their plane ride to Florida!

Iona, ready to go home with her new dad William, was the first of the Dominica dogs to be adopted!
Be an Angel!
St. Nicholas Animal Rescue is always in need of Flight Angel transporters, where a traveler to the U.S. brings a pet under the seat on their flight. These cats or dogs will go to a U.S. partner shelter for adoption. To learn more, reach out on Instagram @st_nicholas_animal_rescue.
