Designed as a neighbourhood recreation facility, the building provides for gender segregated spaces such as basketball courts, climbing walls, fitness studios, weight rooms, game rooms, running tracks, multi activity studios and associated changing rooms. Shared facilities include a swimming pool, the use of which will be scheduled separately for men and women along with cafeteria and juice bar. The facility is integral to the landscape providing a park setting accommodating informal games of football, baseball, etc plus exercise stations, running and cycle path that extends and engages the full extent of the HSC campus.

Solid facade with discreet openings

The massing of the building is carefully sculpted keeping in mind solar radiation, daylighting, wind movement and availability of outside views. The solid insulated UHPC rain-screen facade system, wraps around the exterior of the building and contains minimal openings aligned to sight lines that provide views to the outside. Tall and narrow shaded courtyards cater to daylighting requirements and provide ambient glare free indoor environment. Curtain glazing on the exterior facade is recessed to minimize solar heat gain and glare. I assisted the decision making process with wind rose analysis, radiation analyses and daylighting studies.

I primarily worked on the architectural design and space planning along with coordinating with Structural, MEP and Fire Safety consultants and sustainability studies, massing and facade analysis. I also played role of a BIM Lead on the project and worked closely on resolving modelling issues, clash detection and delivering submittals for live review in a collaborative work environment on Autodesk Docs (BIM360).

The twin CUP facilities serve both Healthcare and Academic Facilities on the Health Sciences Campus. Each CUP facility is designed in a modular way allowing form to follow function comprising of two intersecting blocks; one accommodating wet plant such as the chillers, tanks and cooling towers; the other for electrical services and generators. The intersection of the two provides for educational program with large public display areas, seminar rooms and gallery spaces where vistors can experience the building’s engineering and learn about its performance. A super roof of PV’s unifies the “L” shaped form over the buildings and the adjoining Thermal Energy Storage tanks within the CUP site footprint. Both facilities are designed and planned the same making Operations and Maintenance easier and spare part stock and ordering more efficient.

Working on this building offered me a behind the scenes perspective of smooth and efficient functioning of various campus buildings. It helped me with a deeper understanding of the utility spaces and systems that support a large campus.

Diagram shows the relationship between the visitor areas and equipment spaces and how the visitor sees the various equipment spaces inside the building. Part of my responsibility was to coordinate with Structural and MEP consultants, resolve the design and document the same in Revit, similar to the recreational facility project.
