Design for the CS Academy is inspired by the serene setting of Coimbatore’s weather combined with presence of mountains to the South side offering beautiful views from the site. The project was hence conceptualized as an indoor outdoor experience. Emphasis on environmental sustainability and high performance standards was mutually agreed between us and the clients aligned to Perkins Eastman’s insistence on integrating the same in everything we do, coupled with client’s active and ongoing efforts towards environmental conservation in the region. The overall massing of the project was conceived as a series of interconnected courts with buildings carefully oriented to minimize solar heat gain, capture prevailing winds and optimize cross ventilation not just within the room but also at a master-planning level. While the school was conceived with HVAC systems, the design ensured minimized use of the same to cut down on energy demands. I was jointly leading the design and project delivery and was responsible to lead client presentations, manage a team of junior team members while utilizing experience of senior design principals from PE’s NYC and DC offices.
