Someone recently asked me—well into a conversation about the state of the humanities in higher education—so, wait: What are the humanities, exactly?

INTRODUCING TRAINING IN DIGITAL METHODS FOR HUMANISTS

APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2019–20 FELLOWSHIPS ARE DUE NOVEMBER 2, 2018.

In 2017, IPRH received an award from the campus Investment for Growth Initiative, sponsored by the Provost and the Vice Chancellor for Research, to support a three-year pilot program in Training in Digital Methods for Humanists (TDMH). Modeled on the College of LAS’s Study in a Second Discipline program, TMDH offers competitive fellowships to associate-level and beyond tenured and specialized faculty. Fellows receive a two-course release to pursue on-campus training in some aspect of digital methods, as well as support for a summer off-campus training opportunity. IPRH is pleased to welcome its inaugural cohort of 2018–19 Fellows this fall (please see page 6).

These TDMH Fellows have already begun to be mentored and guided by the TDMH Working Group, comprised of Maria Bonn (iSchool), Kevin Hamilton (Art + Design), Bonnie Mak (iSchool) and Chris Prom (University Archives), and this grand experiment is led by our new staff member, TDMH project manager Dr. Carolyn Randolph (see page 18). In addition to coordinating the Fellows’ curricular experiences and the Working Group’s mentoring activities, Dr. Randolph is developing an overview of Digital Humanities resources on campus, planning ahead for our 2021 IPRH-TDMH summer conference, and investigating grant and foundation possibilities for sustaining this initiative beyond the pilot stage.

The expectation is that by taking Illinois courses in subjects they are curious about—from digital arts making to Python and beyond—but have not had dedicated time to pursue, TDMH Fellows will be able to take their projects in new directions and think purposefully about how digital tools and capabilities can change their methodological approaches.

IPRH-RAGDALE FELLOW Carlos R. Carrillo Music

During his summer 2018 residency at Ragdale, Professor Carrillo worked on a music composition titled Baquine. The piece is a cantata for voices, two saxophones obbligato, and orchestra. The vocal parts include a solo female voice and a children’s choir, and the piece will have an approximate duration of 30 to 35 minutes. The baquiné is an ancient tradition practiced in Puerto Rico and other parts of the Americas in which the death of a child is not received with a mournful ceremony but rather with a celebration, as the child, according to their belief, has now become an angel. The tradition fell into disuse due to medical advances that lowered the child mortality rate.

Mellon Foundation to support the development of emerging areas in the humanities. The grant sponsors faculty, post-doctoral, and predoctoral fellowships, as well as undergraduate internships, to form three robust, inter-generational research groups—in Bio-Humanities, Environmental Humanities, and Legal Humanities—which will run consecutively until 2022. BIO-HUMANITIES AT ILLINOIS This past academic year was the final year of the Mellon Bio-Humanities Research Group, and they once more presented a varied and stimulating array of activities: The group held a number of events, including “Bio-Humanities Interchanges” with Celia Roberts, Sari Van Anders, Timothy Ingold, and Thomas Lemke; “Beyond Therapy and Enhancement: Restructuring Ethical Debates on Biotechnological Innovation,“ a one-day symposium, organized by Post-Doctoral Fellows Rosine Kelz and Daniel Liu, which featured six presenters from around the world; and an undergraduate research symposium organized by the 2017–2018 Bio-Humanities Undergraduate Interns, featuring their research project (“Unwinding Time and Temporality”) and other undergraduate presenters and artists from across campus. Also in 2017–18, the group offered two undergraduate Bio-Humanities courses (“Biology and Society” and “Imagining Molecular Reality”) under the auspices of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Campus Honors Program. The Bio-Humanities undergraduate certificate program was also officially approved this past academic year.

IPRH is pleased to announce that its 2019–20 Fellowship year will be a themeless one. IPRH occasionally suspends its fellowship theme, as was the case for the 2014–15 academic year.

The projects proposed to IPRH for 2019–20 Fellowships may investigate any subject. The proposals will be evaluated on the scholarly excellence and promise of the project, the applicant’s preparation/readiness to undertake the proposed research, the quality of the narrative proposal, the case made for how the IPRH experience/seminar would be beneficial to the project, and the letters of support.

The competition is open to tenure-line faculty and advanced graduate students. All Fellows are expected to maintain residence on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus during the award year, and to participate in IPRH activities, including the yearlong Fellows Seminar. IPRH is especially interested in fostering interdisciplinary work, both within the humanistic disciplines, and between the humanities and the arts.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

In fall 2018, as the Andrew W. Mellon-funded Humanities Without Walls (HWW) consortium enters its fourth year, its impact and relevance are increasingly evident throughout the Midwest and beyond.

This past 2017–18 academic year, representatives of the consortium spoke about the changing climate of doctoral education in the humanities with graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with students and faculty at the Ohio State University, and at the Public Humanities Network meeting at the 2018 annual meeting of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes. Looking ahead: The Humanities Without Walls Principal Investigator, Antoinette Burton, and I are slated to participate in a conversation at Marquette University in Milwaukee in September 2018, and HWW alumni panels are scheduled for the annual AHA and MLA meetings in Chicago in January 2019.

In addition, in fall 2017, a second round of “The Work of the Humanities in a Changing Climate” research challenge yielded seven sponsored projects on topics as diverse as hydrology, healthcare, Hannah Arendt, Assyriology, historical education, applied musicology and indigenous art. And, in July 2018, 30 humanities PhD students gathered in Chicago for the third consortial career-diversity workshop. Next year’s predoctoral workshop will be open to graduate students nationwide—not simply those from HWW consortial institutions—so please be on the lookout for that opportunity.

Margaret “Peggy” Brennan IPRH is pleased to introduce Margaret “Peggy” Brennan, PhD candidate in history, who joined the Humanities Without Walls consortium in 2017 as the Grad Lab Practicum Coordinator. In this capacity, Peggy facilitates the work of the Grad Lab Practicum students participating in “The Work of the Humanities in a Changing Climate” projects, gathers ethnographic feedback from those students, and develops bibliographic material on collaboration for the in-process HWW “White Paper on Collaboration.”

IPRH AT THE CHICAGO HUMANITIES FESTIVAL The Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) is the largest and longest-running urban festival of arts and ideas in the United States. Marking its 29th year in 2018, CHF produces around 170 events each year, including conversations, lectures, and performances, many featuring Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, MacArthur fellows and Oscar, Tony and Grammy winners.

DONNA COX New Media Futures: The Rise of Women in the Digital Arts November 4, 2018 Donna J. Cox, MFA, PhD, is the University of Illinois’ first Michael Aiken Chair, Director of the Advanced Visualization Laboratory (AVL) at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Director of the Illinois Emerging Digital Research and Education in Arts Media Institute (eDream), and Professor in the School of Art and Design at the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Through public outreach projects, Dr. Cox and her collaborators have inspired millions with cinematic virtual tours through astrophysics, earth sciences, engineering, and other data domains.

AVL’s work is shared through venues such as international digital-dome museum shows, high-definition documentary television programs, and IMAX movies. The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry selected Dr. Cox as one of 40 modern Leonardo DaVincis. New Media Futures: The Rise of Women in the Digital Arts, which Dr. Cox co-edited with Ellen Sandor and Janine Fron, was released by the University of Illinois Press in 2018.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW IPRH’s 20th-anniversary year of “Paradigm Shifts” was an eventful one. Even before classes began, humanists gathered for a Humanities Retreat to take the collective pulse and chart paths forward. We then rang in the new academic year with a 20th-anniversary lecture and reception (see right). A two-day series of events called “Speculative Futures” put creative practitioners in dialogue with campus technologies and students on and off campus. And we brought music into the Levis Faculty Center with Performance/Talks by The Jupiter String Quartet and Stephen Taylor; hosted campus and community organizations at the second annual Work-In; and pondered robots then and now with with Amy LaViers, Ben Grosser, and Elly Truitt in “Marvelous Fabrications.” We partnered with Creative Writing and Ninth Letter to bring George Saunders to the Pygmalion Festival; featured José Ángel N. in our second annual IPRH Reads; and offered a Creative Writers Showcase reading by Nafissa Thompson-Spires.

We hosted workshops on career diversity and writing for the public, and learned about the Indian Ocean world from Isabel Hofmeyr and the Russian Revolution form Mark D. Steinberg. We closed out the year with our Prizes for Research in the Humanities ceremony and reception.

THE HUMANITIES & PUBLIC LIFE Chris Higgins (EPOL) and Anke Pinkert (Germanic Languages and Literatures) have been leading discussions about Public Humanities at Illinois for the last two years. Their IPRH Research Cluster on the subject grew into “Learning Publics,” co-sponsored by the Center for Advanced Study, “which features ongoing dialogue (salons) punctuated by public events.” Last year’s work culminated in “Humanities and Public Life,” a conference they ran as part of the campus-wide “Research@150” multi-symposium event in April 2018. Professors Higgins and Pinkert have also taught a graduate course (CAS 587: “Learning Publics: Theory, Performance, Practice”) in Spring 2018 and developed an undergraduate Grand Challenge Learning course (GCL 199: “Introduction to Public Humanities”), which runs this fall, both centered on public humanities—all of which, they report, has helped them “articulate how public engagement enlivens the humanities and the humanities help the public university fulfill its mission.”

EDUCATION JUSTICE PROJECT Based in the College of Education, the Education Justice Project (EJP) offers education programs to men incarcerated at the Danville Correctional Center, a state prison in Danville, Illinois. The comprehensive college-in-prison program, which has served students at Danville since 2008, includes upper-division college courses taught by Illinois faculty members and advanced graduate students, educational workshops, and extracurricular activities such as an anti-violence group, an ESL program, a guest lecturer series, reading groups and tutoring.

WELCOME TO IPRH IPRH is pleased to intruduce Dr. Carolyn Randolph, who joined IPRH as Project Manager for the new Training in Digital Methods for Humanists (TDMH) Fellowship Program in March 2018. Dr. Randolph earned a B.A. in English and a B.A. in Communication and Culture from Indiana University and received her Ph.D. in Communications and Media Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

She has served as an Instructor in the College of Media and also facilitated faculty-development workshops for Urbana School District #116, specializing in critical media literacy and culturally competent classroom practices. She has published on the subject of mediated representations of HIV-positive black women in traditional and digital media. Dr. Randolph is the founder and principal investigator for the Champaign County Racial Justice Data Portal, a digital database that interrogates racial inequities in the local criminal justice system, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center.

She is a former member of the Champaign County Racial Justice Task Force (2015–2017). Please stop in and meet Dr. Randolph next time you are at IPRH.

CONGRATULATIONS IPRH had a wonderful David F. Prindable intern this past year: Madeline Alvendia.

Madeline assisted with our social media communications and undergraduate outreach. She graduated this spring 2018 with a major in History and won the Martha Belle Barrett Scholarship for Undergraduate Academic Excellence. She will attend Harvard’s Graduate School of Education to earn an Ed.M. in the Teacher Education Program, where she will earn a teaching credential for high school social studies. To support this study, she has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation of Alexandria, VA in its twenty-seventh annual fellowship competition. James Madison Fellowships support further study of American history by college graduates who aspire to become teachers of American history, government, and social studies in the nation’s secondary schools, as well as by experienced secondary school teachers of the same subjects. The fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of her course of study toward a master’s degree. That program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution. In addition to receiving the funding, she will attend Georgetown next June and study the Constitution there. The award is intended to recognize promising and distinguished teachers, to strengthen their knowledge of the origins and development of American constitutional government.

IPRH | Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities

Established in 1997, the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign promotes interdisciplinary study in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

IPRH serves as a major hub for humanities activity on campus. We coordinate and host lectures, symposia, and panel discussions on a wide variety of topics, and we provide awards that recognize excellence in humanities research to faculty and students. We bring distinguished scholars from around the world to campus, and we support Illinois faculty and graduate student research through Fellowships and a bi-monthly seminar. IPRH helps to cultivate collaborative faculty-driven initiatives through its Research Clusters; hosts multi-million dollar external foundation grants; and supports faculty and graduate student reading groups.
