This past year, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded $3,000,000 to IPRH to fund the first two years of an extensive consortium of fifteen humanities institutes in the Midwest and beyond.

By leveraging the strengths of multiple distinctive campuses, the ‘Humanities Without Walls’ consortium aims to create new avenues for collaborative research, teaching, and the production of scholarship in the humanities, forging and sustaining areas of inquiry that cannot be created or maintained without cross-institutional cooperation.

The grant, led by IPRH Director and Principal Investigator Dianne Harris, will make possible two initiatives: One supports the development of summer workshops (the first of which will take place during the summer of 2015) for pre-doctoral students in the humanities who intend to pursue careers outside the academy; a second initiative will fund crossinstitutional teams of faculty and graduate students pursuing research that focuses on a grand challenge: “The Global Midwest.” The latter is intended to stimulate collaborative research that rethinks and reveals the Midwest as a key site in shaping global economies and cultures.

Annual Theme 2015–16: INTERSECTIONS IPRH is pleased to announce that the theme for the 2015–16 IPRH Fellowship year will be “Intersections.” Marking spatial and conceptual sites of convergence and departure, intersections offer junction points for tracking and investigating multiple paths, perspectives, imaginaries, or

The Nicholson Endowment is a gift of Grace W. Nicholson (1906–1998), who pursued undergraduate studies in LAS, and Professor Emeritus John A. Nicholson (1891–1986), a faculty member in the Philosophy Department at Illinois for 33 years. The Nicholson Endowment, which was established in 1999, provides support for the academic programs in LAS and excellence in the study of the humanities on campus.

The Odyssey Project The IPRH is very pleased to be able to partner with the Illinois Humanities Council and our faculty to administer the Odyssey Project.

In 2013–14, the Odyssey Project orchestrated an impressive eighth year at the University of Illinois. The Odyssey Project has followed the Bard College Clemente Course model—offering six credits of humanities classes in Philosophy, Literature, US History, and Art History to students who fall at or near the poverty line. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is proud to be one of the 40 major universities and colleges across the country to provide this course each year. Instructors for 2013–14 were Cris Mayo (Director of Odyssey Project, Philosophy), Dale Bauer (Literature), Samuel Byndom (US History), and Adrienne Johnson (Art History).

In 2014–15, we will start the ninth year of this immensely successful public-engagement effort, supported in large part by the generosity of the Provost’s Office, the Illinois Humanities Council, and IPRH. We are now also working with Urbana’s Adult Education Center to coordinate what happens at the University— regarding research on education and poverty—with important Champaign-Urbana community programs.

Education Justice Project The Education Justice Project (EJP), housed in the IPRH building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Urbana, continues to offer for-credit courses and other educational programs to men incarcerated at Danville Correctional Center, a state prison about 35 miles east of the Urbana-Champaign campus.

The IPRH also offers modest financial and overhead support to EJP. The highlights of EJP’s past year included the reception hosted by University President Robert Easter and Mrs. Easter at the president’s house; the premier of the first video documentary about EJP, which screened at the Art Theatre in Champaign; and a visit to the prison by Francis Ssuubi, an advocate for prisoners’ families in Uganda, East Africa. EJP plans to establish a partnership with Ssuubi’s organization, Wells of Hope, which will provide opportunities for students from the Urbana-Champaign campus to participate in a new study abroad program in East

Africa, focusing on issues around incarceration and its impacts globally.

EJP this year expanded its programs at the prison with the introduction of C.A.V.E.—Chicago AntiViolence Education. This initiative is the result of EJP students’ desire to reduce the violence that wracks the Chicago communities from which so many of them come. C.A.V.E. involves EJP students serving as facilitators of a trauma-based anti-violence curriculum that’s delivered to young men serving short stints at the prison.

INFORMATION Established in 1997, the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign promotes interdisciplinary study in the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

IPRH serves as the primary locus for and promotes endeavors related to these fields on the University of Illinois campus and beyond. IPRH plans and hosts numerous lectures, symposia, and panel discussions on a wide variety of topics, bringing distinguished scholars from the United States and around the world to our campus; grants fellowships to Illinois faculty and graduate students and to post-doctoral scholars to support their research and scholarly activities; provides awards that recognize excellence in humanities research on our campus; awards grants to support collaborative research; and coordinates faculty and graduate-student reading groups.
