FOREWORD by Lo ui se Boyd D ale (C h a irm an of t h e Phil ate li c F ou nclalio n)

With the pas sing of Mr . Alfred H. Caspary, Philately lost a devoted adherent, and with his death , an era in American Philatel y came to a close . Perhaps it is not an ex aggeration to say that Mr . Caspary was the last of the truly grea t collector s. In his lifetime he was able to acquire a fabulous collection of postage stamps. His knowledge , taste a nd discrimination for clas sic stamps of the world were unsurpassed. His advice a nd opinions were widely sought after. Mr. Caspar y was always happ y to give of his time , to help other philatelists so lve any difficult pro blems . Becaus e of his retiring nature , he di sliked publicit y his name be cam e almost a legend . He liked nothing better his stamps with a friend or two for hours at a time. minutes , for the material which was placed before the

of every kind, than to show Those hours viewer was so

a nd hence and discus s pass ed lik e marvelou s.

Mr. Caspary was not merely a collector, but a connoi sse ur , not only of stamp s, bur also of furniture and porcelains . His knowledge was astounding and his a ppreciation and love for something beautiful in perfect condition showed itself in the man y wonderful acquisitions which he made during his lif etime. He beli ev ed that hi s stamp collection should be made available to fellow philatelists so that they too might enjoy the possession of a philatelic gem . Louise
