Introduction to Mr. Frederick R. Mayer and his Gold Medal Collection of Nova Scotia Among the hierarchy of United States philately, Mr. Frederick R. Mayer is probably the best-known "low profile " collector. Esoteric and scholarly in his philatelic passion s, tenaciou s in his pursuits, through his four decade s of collection, he has amassed perhaps four "best ever" Collection s. His United States 1856 Five Cent s Imperforate , best known in the United State s, is considered without equal and may, in fact , be the preeminent single stamp collection ever formed. He has been accused (humorou sly) of collecting the TWO best Costa Rica Collection s ever. The Macao is without peer and no other than the Macao Po stal Mu seum has made numerou s advances. THE PENCE ISSUES OF 1851-1857 The Pence Issues stamps of Nova Scotia fall easi ly into three main categories: 1851, 1853 and 1857 Issues. The original 1851 Issue consisted of three denominations , the three pence dark blue(Scott 3, S.G. 2 and 3), six pence yellow green (Scott 4, S.G. 5) and one shilling cold violet (Scott 7, S.G. 7 and 7c). All shipments from the printer occurred between July and September of 1851. In thj catalogue , the stamps from this printing will be referred to by the above colors, as shades are, in our opinion , arbitrary and the likely result of the natural effects of age and reaction to the blued paper . The 1853 Issue consisted of an additional denomination , the one penny red brown (Scott l , S.G. l) . Printed over a twelve day period in April of I 853 and sent to Nova Scotia in a sing le shipment , the very minor differences in shades are again attributable to natural causes. The bisecting of the three pence and six pence was first authorized by Postmaster Woodgate in October , 1854 specifically to make up the seven and one-half pence rate to Great Britain . Other bisects were accepted , but not authorized. The 1857 Issue comprised additional printings of the original denomjnations in slightly difference colors, the three pence in blue (Scott 2, S.G. 4), six pence in dark green (Scott 5, S.G. 6) and one shilling in purple (Scott 6, S.G. 8). All shipme nts were made in July of 1857. Again , shades are arbitrary and, therefore , all stamps from the 1857 Issue will be referred to by the above colors.

THE CENTS ISSUES OF NOVA SCOTIA Following the adoption of decimal currency in January of 1860, the Pence Issue stamps were replaced by the issuance of stamps denomjnated in cents. Five different cents denomjnations were issued in October of that year. An additiona l two cents value was added in May of 1863 to accommodate the new postal rate for letter within the same county. All of the stamps were engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York. There were two printings of the two, eight and one-half, ten and twelve and onehalf cents values . Three printings of the one cent were necessary and five for the five cents . Although the Issue has some minor production varieties , the only major variety occurred on the one cent as it also exists imperforated vertically. It is believed that five or six sheets of thjs were printed. On some values, toned paper variations are reported existing in the same sheet along with normal paper. This issues was gradually replaced by the stamps of Canada after Nova Scotia became part of the Confederation on July 1, 1867. Interestingly , in February of 1895, the Canadian Government sold the remaining unused Nova Scotia stamps. However, no five cents stamps were included.

In this cata logue, the sale is arranged by Issue and within the Issue by denomination . Within each denomination , covers are ananged by the highest denomjnation found on the cover as the primary listing. Domestic usages are followed by usages to other provinces , to Canada , to England and finally the United States. Bisects are listed at the end of each denomjnation.
