Fifty Years of Progress Again it is with pleasure that the H. R. Harmer Organization is able to report new records for each of the three Houses. London increased the previous year's total auction realization by nearly £100 ,000 to reach £856 ,269 , plus Private Treaty at £75 ,756 . New York was nearly $500 ,000 up to achieve $2,602 ,970 with Private Treaty at $181 ,190. Sydney added A $105 ,000 to bring the Organizat ion's total to £2 ,173,211 or $5,215 ,706 . It is appropriate that as the 50th year is reached the news comes from New York of the sale of massive sections of the Lichtenste in- Dale collections-indeed these have already started and a new world record has already been created for a single philatelic piece , the wonderful Mau ritius cover franked with two examples of the Penny " Post Office" , $380 ,000, the equivalent of £158 ,333 . With the London and New York Houses now in the Third Generation we feel Fifty Years young and look forward to continued progress in the years to come. Our renewed thanks are due to philatelists , amateur and professional , in all parts of the world who have supported and encouraged our endeavours to provide an unrivalled International Auctio n Service based on the highest ethical standards . It is on this foundation we intend to continue to build .

Great Britain was strongly featured with three specialised sales on November 6, February 26 , 27 and May 27, 28, the last including the famous " ten penny black " first day cover which sold at £4 ,800 to bring the Season·s Great Britain total to over £75 ,000 . On July 1 it returned to that attractive island for £2,30 0 when sold for Lady Alison; a remarkable increase in value. This will shortly raise the interest ing Capita l Gains Tax problem as to its value in Ap ril 19 65. Perhaps next year we will report on the outcome . Increasing use of the H. R. The New Season, 1968-69 New York
London
Extraordinary as it may seem, there is little doubt that the pre-Christmas portion of the 1968 - 69 New York Season will realize close to $2, 000 ,000 l At the time of writing (early November) the one - million mark has already been comfortably passed and there are still to come three further auctions including the exceptional DaleLichtenstein Sale Two , comprising Part One of British North America .
The 51 st Season in Bond Street is now well under way and with six sales already completed the total is
The auction of the first portion of Mauritius from the same source , held on the evening of October 21 was , without question , the greatest ph ilatelic happening of all time! Williams in Stamps of Fame as " . . . the quintessence of philatelic super lativeness ", the letter lived up to its high praise and sold for the WORLD RECORD PRICE OF $380 ,000 , almost three times the previous record . The remaining 146 lots also sold to excellent advantage for a total of $595 ,147 and an average of over $4000 a lot.

THE PRIVATE TREATY DEPARTMENTS New York
London
New York 's total of S181 ,190 was somewhat lower than the previous Season's S263,605 . Activity was also reduced to a greater degree with a result that the average sale figure rose from S4881 to S5175.
For owners of " four figure " collections resident in Great Britain there is naturally something of a preference for sale by Auction rather than by Private Treaty because of the implication of the Capital Gains Tax . (This does not of course apply to overseas vendors .)
Deman d for properties remained as strong as it has for many years but equally the supply remained on the conservative side. Eighty per cent of all properties offered w ere sold privately, 1 0 per cent w ere transferred to auction (under the Private Treaty / Auct io n Plan) and 10 per cent w ere unsold . The preference of Private Treaty or Auction is largely a matter of personal inclinatio n. Harmers in New York have clearly demonstrated that they can sell to good advantage by bot h methods . Enquiries from pote nt ial vendors are invited and are treated in the strictest confidence . The more important sales for the past season co vered a wide range of countries and groups including:
Despite this problem , the very handso me total of £75,756 was reached for transactions which included a wide variety of specialised and genera l collections and scarcer individual pieces . Needless to say we are at all times pleased to hear from owners of all types of collection s, etc ., and we certainl y have ample keen buyers .
Amongst some of the more interesting sales were : June .
