N THIS, our thirty-ninth Resume reporting on an outstanding Season, the forty-sixth since the firm was founded, we announce another record period. For the last four years the ÂŁ1,000,000 annual turnover has been exceeded but during the past Season the Organization's total for the record " Caspary " Season was passed. This is solid proof of consistent progress achieved by energy, expertise and efficiency on an international scale.

One interesting achievement during the past Season was the New York House's valuation of the "Philip H. Ward, Jr." philatelic Estate for which the fee was $38,500. It was no small compliment that Harmers were engaged to undertake this exceptional job as was the case in 1960 when the London Office valued the remarkable philatelic archives of De La Rue. It is only some two or three years ago that Harmers were called on to value a choice overseas " six figure " collection of classics for insurance purposes.

Over the past decade there have been many changes in the Auction World.

We however, as in the past, remain a family business, always endeavouringsuccessfully we are told-to improve the service which has given us an international prestige of which we are, not unnaturally, very proud. This has been achieved without sacrificing the personal service we have always given.

Finally, we thank everyone for their support over the past years-the countless thousands who buy and sell through us, the host of Trust Officers, Lawyers and Executors who have utilized our services and generously recommended us to others, the Editors of the philatelic and lay press who have found our stamp news interesting and accurate, the media of radio and television where philately is always good " copy " and last, but definitely not least, loyal staffs on three Continents who are members of the H. R. Harmer family, either by name, birthright or sincere inclination.

In 1960-61 Harmer s passe d th e million mark without the Caspary considerable achievesales-a ment- and thi s continued for the two following Sea sons, 1961-62 and 1962-63. In 1963-64, th e subject of th e rep ort, th e New York Hou se not only pas sed the $ 1,000,000, it almo st reac hed $ 1,500,000 and thi s was without any large individual collection but rather from a steady supply of top properti es from collectors, E state s, beneficiaries and charitable organiz ations.

25 ° 0 incre a se in turnover The total of $1,454,252 exceeded the previou s Season by $290,642, an increase of 25 ° 0 • Acti vity was also greater as will be seen by comparison with previous figures (given in parenthese s) : number of lot s 34,809 (3 1,225) ; numb er of catal ogue s 23 (25) ; number of sessions 66 ( 62).

The continued increase in the value of United States Collections sold confirmed that not only are Harmers the top hou se for the se issues but also that the news has got around! United States and Pos sessions represented 40 % of the lots sold and a fraction over 50 °10 of th e turnover.

The market continued strong. United States showed comfortabl e increases in almost all issues ; certain European countries continued upward s to a degree that must give some pause for thought; Briti sh Commonwealth showed very useful improvement in the early issues - long overdue - and some improvement in the later ser ies.

Overall it was the better and rarer stamps that showed " run-of-the-mill " material the most increment, remained sluggish. Stamps on entires continued active , stronger with Foreign issue s than United States which have already been " marked up " over many years.

The Season opened on September 10-12 with the usual General Auction , including the William R. Waldron Collection. $62,288 was the total. Two weeks later a small British Commonwealth auction made $21,511.

October saw a three-day General Sale on 7, 8 and 9 make $54,334 and an extensive accumulation of U nited Sta tes on October 21, 22, 23, 24 reach $87,253 for the 2,348 lots . November repeated the same dose ; on 12, 13 and 14 United States and Foreign made $59,498 and on November 25, 26, United State s brought $108,477.

Canada Imprint and Plate Number blocks were th e feature on December 9, 10. Offer ed for George Lee of Bern ardsv ille, New Jersey, the Collection brought $53,496, including $21,000 for the unique marginal block of ten of the Seaway inver t . Th e second December auction, comprising Air Post (including the very fine Collection formed by th e late Watson B. Dickerman of L ong I sland , New York) added $34,646 for th e 844 lots .

The N ew Year start ed on January 14, 15 with United States, Confederates and Hawaii again including a part of th e Dickerman Collection. Containing many rariti es, th e auction hit $78,3 18. Thirty- one vendors supplied mate rial for th e 2,895-lot, five-day auction held Januar y 27 thr ough February 4. They receive d $105,740, less th e appropriate mod est commission. February remained a busy month with Briti sh Commonwealth and United Stat es being offere d . The former au ction included th e Briti sh porti on of th e Dickerman Collection and brought $55,478, while the latt er, containing the " Augu st Dietz, Sr ." and" F . J . Schultze " Collections, a selection pr esent ed to th e Int ernational School of Americ a, Ohi o, etc., made $73,866.

In mid-Mar ch close to 2000 lots were offered for various owners. $73,6 10 changed hand s. On March 31 and appropriately as an April I United State s-described " outstanding group " was sold for the School of Engin eeri ng and Appli ed Science of Columbia University , the L exington School for the Deaf of New York City, and 18 pri vate sources . Th e 900 lots just passed the $60,000 figur e by $667. On Thur sda y in the same week th e Collection of Confederate States (Postmasters ' Provisional s and Gen eral Issues ) formed by John R. Hill , Jr . of D allas, Texas , was offered. The 295 lots brought $22,488.

United Stat es continued to domin ate the sales for the re st of April. On the 21 and 22, 1169 lots, including a portion of the August Dietz Collection made $42,077, while on the evening of April 28 a modest 97 lots of Cla ssic I ssue s brought $41,439, averaging close to $500 a lot. Top price was $6750 for the famo us pa ir of 1847 Waukegan covers from the Caspary Collection . The increa se in price from $2000 in 1956 clearly dem onst rates the rapid rise in price levels for extra-quality pieces.

On the afternoon of April 28 (two auctions in one day! ) and on the following three afternoons, a popular General Auction hit $71,853, followed on May 12-15 by another General Sale which brought nearly $75,000 .

Asia and Latin America real ized Semi-specialized $42,522 when sold on May 26, 27 . It included the China Coll ection formed and offered by order of Col. Robert F. Bat es, a group of China Proofs and Essays by order of Mr. and Mrs . R. 0 . D . Hopkins , Colombia from John Redington and Peru by order of the beneficiaries of an Estate. The Season concluded with three General Auctions sold on June 9, 10, 11 ($ 73,518 ), Jun e 29, 30, July 1, 2 ( $76,401 ) and July 21-24 ( $81,096 ), by which time some members of a slightly exhausted staff were on vacation and others were already regretfully back to cope with preparations for what will doubtless prove to be another outstanding Season .

Report London Highest ever total Solid and consistent progre ss was th e obvious conclu sion when on Jul y 22 H . R . Harm er Ltd . completed th e 46th London Season with a high est ever total of £457,644. In all 24 auction cata logues were issued comp rising 63 sessions and 16,937 lots with an average realisation per lot of over £27 . The vend ors, who were literally from almos t every part of the free wor ld , numb ered 872 .

Collections from old clients Th e opening September sale brought nearly £ I 7,000 and the following one which includ ed fine Commonwealth from an old client H erman Sch eltema of Hil versum , Holland, £ I 7,217. In early October the late Arthur Harding 's G enera l Co llection, stro ng in the Germania groups, made over £ I 7,000 in two days. In the final October sale £775 was paid for the Gr eat Britai n, P.O.S.B. 1/3 pair with head omitted, the stamps having been purchased in a North London Post Office by a United States November 4-6 was servicema n for half-a-crown! exclusively Commonwealth with som e fine figures for scarcer high values and a remarkable £420 for a newly discovered part-p erf. Great Brit ain booklet . " Prince Doria" R.P.S. Sale Th e stor y of the forgotten " Prince Dori a Pamphilj " Colle ction which finally reached the Royal Philatelic Society , Lond on, after a lapse of nearl y 50 years, made headlin es when on N ovember 19 in und er three hours £63,840 was realised for a major portio n of th ese fine It alian Stat es. The Collection was exhibited in five Italian cities prior to th e auction which no doubt contributed to th e remarkable success of this out standing sale .

Two 3-session D ecem ber sales added £ ! 9,733 and £16,108 respective ly and brought the year 's total for 1963 to nearly £440,000. They included Collections from Sir John G. Rutherford , Col. H . G . M . Dunn , Vict or Skut ezky, Mrs . F . S. Graty , a Dutch Collector and from th e Estate of Capt. C. H. Jones, D .S.O .

The New Year This started with £3,100 for a two-volume Commo nwealth Coll ection sold en bloc in th e Janu ar y 6-8 sale, in which 245 bu yers paid over £23 ,000 for some 870 lots.

The Lord Ju stice Upjohn, P.C ., C.B.E ., D .L., six mor e from a Canadian Collector, and Falkland I slands from Lyl e W . Bigbe e of Beverly Hill s, California, provided a further interesting sale in lat e Januar y, adding £17,258 to the Season's total. Tw o February auctions mad e £16 ,608 and £16,964. A group of Briti sh Tr easury essays br ought surpri sing figures in th e first sale.

March sales (£17,890 and £16,418 ) includ ed int eresting Collections from Frank Fancutt, M.B .E. , two London

Collectors, Mrs . H . Barlow and R. Antoniades, and Ian C. M acfarlan e's Gr eat Britain also Collections from th e E states of W . B. Cumming of Nairobi , th e " T . R. High to n " United States and Briti sh N orth America and fine Indian s from th e Estate of an overseas I~dian diplomat.

Four April catalogues April was out standing with four catalogues, compri sing seven sessions. The " Mayall " Falkland Islands on April 6 produced many new record s and the 175 lots The 48-volume Commonwealth reached £9,500.

Collection from R. M . J. Pendred, D .L. , J .P ., followed on April 13, 14, bringing £1 1,119. A singl e day of Mauritius on April 15 adde d £14,5 80. The owner, A. J . Stevens, for whom we sold a Cape of G ood Hop e Co llection in I 959, wrote: " Thank you for all you have done and I am m ore than satisfied with the result" .

Roche " Vaticans and bro ught the Season's figure over £350,000 .

In mid-May Commonwea lth fro m W. A . Daysh, from a shy Swiss Collector and J . Charkham, contrib ut ed £15 ,332 in an excellent sale which included six Sarawak covers we found amongst an apparent few pounds worth of Indian envelopes sent by Admiral B. C. B. Brooke, C.B ., a descendant of Capt. J . Brooke, nephew of the first White R ajah . May closed with a £16,425 sale which included Collections from Major N . J . S. Gurne y of Che ltenham and th e " M . M . Cooke " Airmai ls.

BBC Televise Airmail Results An unu sual single stam p classic world Collection almost entirel y unu sed was sold for Mrs. V. K. Blackburne of Ha slemer e on Jun e 8, 9 for over £18,000 and in late June the late J. R. S. G oodall's General Collection and othe r prop erties, plus th e " T. E . Field " Empire and 1911 Coronat ion Airmails adde d nearly £20,000. Highlights of thi s sale were included in the BBC T elevisio n news the sam e evening .

A good G enera l Sale, Jul y 6-8, with some useful specialised group s and includi ng the late Leonard C. Park 's Collection and another from the Est at e of a Maltese pr ofesso r amasse d almost £ 15,000 whilst th e last Season's sale of nearly 1,000 lots which included 24 volum es of Commonwealth from Mrs . T . M .

Hamilton-Gill ett e of G eneva, A. C. Lascaride s' Gre ek Large H erm es H eads and C . W. Tuff's Gr eat Brit ain and United States added £21,132. In this final sale there was a remind er of th e " great Strand stamp robbery " of Feb ruary when one of the few 1/9 New Zealand Railway Centenary " value omitted " errors sold prior to the robbery nearly doubled the valuation at £190.

Thus ended on a high note of succe ss H armer's London Season, th e best ever in 46 years and the sixth successive time the £400,000 has been exceeded . T o you, Vendor s and Buyers alike, we are indebted for th e continued confidence and appreciation of the effort, expertise and efficiency which made the se results possibl e.

The New Season

Sales in New York 1964-65 October-the As of the time of writing-late Season of H. R. Harmer, Inc . gives every indication of exceeding the high figure of 1963-64 . Both in auctions already held and in auctions scheduled, results and expectations are ahead.

The problems of an auction house are always twofold, firstly to obtain the fine Collections and secondly to have the experienced personnel to work on them. Both of the probl ems we believe we have solved comp lete ly.

Names of some owners of Collection s will be found in the auction calendar; we feel it perhap s appropriate here to name the staff of experts who break down the fine Collections .

Headed by Mr. William L. Roscher, Asst . Vice President, they are (in alphabetical order): Winthrop S. Boggs (Roll of Distinguished Philatelists ), Max 0.

Buser, Mrs. Marie Ritter (another member of the philatelic family of Busers ), Igor Rubach, Norman Scrivener and Herman S. Shenitz; in charge of catalogue production, Miss Meme Schwarz .

The Season's opener was even more extensive than the previous year. Covering four sessions on September 21, 22, 23, it comprised 2188 lots of United States, British Commonwealth and Foreign issues . 20th Century European issues were a little harder than previously .

The total realised was $79,635.

On October 6, 7 United States and Possessions and on October 8 Austria (chiefly 20th Century ) and a specialised Collection of Germany and Plebiscites were sold for a total of $46,800.

On October 13, 14, 15 of the following week, th e Chester A. Gordon Collection of Air Post issues was offered along with British Commonwealth and Foreign.

The 1544 lots made the very pleasing figure of $51,815.

An attractive spec ialised Collection of Papua sold extreme ly well.

British America held the floor on October 20, 21, 22 with $81,482 realised.

The evening of November 4 saw the disposal of the famo us Thomas A. Matthews' Collection of United States aero-philately. The 24c. inverted centre brought the record price of $ 15,500; the unique Jupit er Balloon letter - the world's first official airborne missive sold at $6,500.

The auction totalled $87,010.50 for the 232 lots. On the two following days outstanding United States and Hawaii added some $67,500 to the H. R. Harmer, Inc. total.

November 17, 18, 19 saw the offer of an exten sive one-of-a-kind British Commonwealth Collection and on December 1, 2, 3, 4 there was an important General auction.

The New Year , as can be seen from the schedule , is destined to be a most active one.

Sales in London The 47th London Season opened with a 3-day General Sale, September 14-16, in which were included fifteen volumes of Commonwealth from the Estates of Captain J. F. and Mrs. Richardson, General Collections from two lady collectors and J. R . C. Cro ssle's Malaya. This successful auction realised £18,863 . The more important sale at the end of the month included the " R obson " Collection and some fine classics from an old client who was buying Gtamps before the turn of the century! £550 was paid for a marginal block of Great Britain ld .

"V. R ." and a used block of four of Norway No. 1 reali sed £650. £20,130 was paid by 186 buyers in many part s of the world.

October 12-14 included a 24-volume General Collection from Mrs . A. Peake and many interesting figures were included in the total of nearly £19,000.

Two Doctors of Medicine, R . Willan of Shaw, Lanes . and Allan A. Wilkinson of Old Perlican, Newfoundland , contributed selections from their Newfoundland Collection s for the specialised sale of October 26-27. Advance postal bidding indicated an excellent result which was fully reali sed by a total of £10,912.

November 9-11 was an all-Commonwealth sale which included a specia lised Collection of Silver Jubile es and Coronations sent in by an Overseas collector. An out standing piece was a block of twelve Great Britain 2! d.

Prus sian blue. A fortnigh t later a one-day " speciai " on November 23 saw the dispersal of the valuable speciali sed Collection of St. Vincent, offered by a member of the Royal Philatelic Society, London.

The first December sale, 7-9, includes an important Collection offered on behalf of the British Empire Cancer Fund and other properties, not ab ly th e" J. C. Holmes" Foreign. Canada and France are outstanding together with choice groups of Capes, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Newfoundland, etc. A two -d ay sale, December 21-22, will end the 1964 programme with a fine selection of General properties, including Ceylon, German States on covers and Great Britain, also specialised Griqualand West offered entir e and a unique block of twenty 1859 Trinidad.

Important Great Britain on January 18, 19 The New Year opens on January 4 with a 3-day G eneral Sale, including the " L. M. Ratn er " George VI and E.II also Italy and States with rare covers and Somaliland 1940 Parcel Post 1 Lira pair (catalogued £5,000 ), useful Germ an States and Sierra Leone Specialised, followed on January 18-19 by an outstanding Collection of Great Britain which has remained untouched since the vendor's father died thirty years ago! It includes seven plum". different " abnormals " and a 2d. "Tyrian A London collector has contributed an exceptio nal group of modern errors to round off an outstanding auction.

The forty volumes of Jamaica and other Commonwealth countries for the " G. W. Collett " Estate will be sold on March 15-17 and, on dates to be arranged, the outstanding Collection of the Kingdom of Italy, Vatican, etc., will be offered for P . J. Liddell, Esq. , D.S.C. , F.R.P .S.L. of Carlisle, and will certainly attract keen Continental competition.

The Private

Treaty Departments

London Towards the end of th e Season 1962- 63 several imp ort ant transactions lifted th e tota l to a high level-far above the normal. As always, a rise in the Auction turnover draws materi al which otherwise might have been handled

by Private Treaty and necessarily last Season's record Auction turnover resulted in more normal " P.T ." figures of £45,672.

September included a pair of the then novelty, Great Britain R ed Cross 3d. " mis sing cross ". A useful Persian Collection was negotiated at £575. (Incidentally, we have cane b/anche to purchase anything worthwhile in Persia ). A useful Collection of Qu eensla nd changed hands at £2,400.

The spate of R ed Cross issues produced ano th er " missing cross " variety in South Africa, a strip of the 12c. being sold for th e lu cky local finder. November saw a variety of transactions, including three usefu l Collections, a semi-wholesale stock of Europe and a Gen eral Co llection at £2,050.

In December a small Collection of Ceylon sold at £530, a General group at £1,400, a modem Commonwealth Collection at £675, six volum es of Foreign at 500 guineas and a Great Britain 1962 N.P.Y . 1/3 "hea d omined" at £400. (See page 15 regarding this find of four examples by two U.S. servicemen stationed at Northolt Air Base.)

January was not excep tional but included a few modest Collections, a used Cana da " Seaway s " invert, a a choice Jamaican group, some Swaziland "decimals", Cape " Woodb lock " 4d. and a Commonwealth stock at £1, 100.

In Apri l a Collectio n of Gold Coast was placed and severa l Commonwealth erro r s sold for nearly £600. For a returni ng refugee from the Zanzibar turmoil a stock of "Jamhuri "cove rs was sold, plus two Iri sh groups and a Commonwealth Collection at near £1,000.

A Collection of" Zemstvo s ", a rare Falklands cover, a stock of Silver Weddings and a Newfoundland " H alifax " sheet were sold in May and Jun e. Following the" T. E. Field" Airmail sale, the air library was sold . A rare New Zealand" part perf." strip, a mint set of Basutoland Officials and a Collection of Great Britain at £1,000 found new owner s. A mint Canada " Seaways " invert was sold for the Canadian owner just before the books were closed for Audit on July 31.

As vend ors will see on page 36, commission on Pri vate Tr eaty scales down to ten per cent . on " four figure " transactions and that where a prompt sale and immediate payment are a considera tion it is usually pos sibl e to complete a sale in a few weeks and frequently a matt er of days.

New York Another active Season existed for the H . R. Harmer Inc. The numb er of transPri vate Treaty Department. actions increased to 147 from 121 for the pr eviou s twelve-month period. The total was somew hat lower at $187,613 compared with $227,728, resulting in an average of $1,277 per transaction compar ed with $ 1,66 1.

Sept emb er started reasonably quiet with eight sales, notabl y an at tractive Cape of Good Hope Collectio n at $8,450. In October, nearly $20,000 changed hands for 15 units which included Collections assoc iated with th e 1870 Siege of Paris at $8,500.

by Collect N ovemb er covered 13 transactions-headed tions of Britis h America at $2,700 and Air Post a$2,200. An Austria Rose mercury went to Europe at $1,575. December covered 18 sales for just und er $10,000.

The New Year started strong ly with the sale of a Europ ean Collection for $38,000 and various Continent Collections ranging from $100 to $3,500. The 18 items passed $60,000.

February also saw many Collections by Countries or Continents sold-out of 16 transactions, 11 fell in this category. $18,250 was added to the total. March included sales of similar Collect ions totalling $ 16,700.

April and May were somewhat slower, 19 transfers of title making $18,800, of which six sales were Collections from the H . S. Pool Estate .

June looked up when 16 units were transferred for $11,500, chiefly in Collectio ns (G enera l or Country ).

Jul y had but five tran sactions but they included firstly an extensive gen era l stock of chiefly mint material placed at $ 17,705 and, second ly, a group of Swiss covers sold in Europe for $8,000. The owner wrote: " It was only a few weeks ago that I casually mentioned to your Bill Roscher that I might sell at an advantageous price a small group of valuab le stamps on cover which did not fit into my basic plan of collecting. Th e next day he informed me that you felt you could dispose of the lot promptly at priva te treaty at a mutually agreed upon value. I delivered the items to you, a top price was set for the whole 6 roup and you contacted yo ur prospective purchaser. " Today I am in receipt of a check from yo u for the full amount less your well-earned commission, and I want to thank yo u very much for it ... " Even Aug ust found buyers (is there a Season anymore ?) and six items or Collections passed from satisfied vend ors to plea sed buyers for just over $4,000.

As previously, many vend ors took advantage of the " Pri vate Treaty /Auction Plan ", whereby a Collection is offered privately for a limited time, usu ally of a few months, and if not sold (the exception, not the rul e), is tran sferred to an auction in whi-::h space has been reserved. The result is that a Collection is often sold during a period when, if it had been accepted solely for auction, it would otherwise have been lying idl e in storage await ing its schedu led auction date .

Bu siness with overseas buyers increased, and although most of th e material offere d is th at of Oceania, it now brings keen competition, thu s sho wi ng th at the Sydn ey H ouse is a first class m ed ium for th e sale of th ese issues.

In Jun e I 963 H . R . H armer Ltd. sold a relatively unkn own Lib ya par cel post stamp for £ 1,300. Apparentl y a sheet of th e Sc. had been ove rprint ed in error and all were sold in packets. (See R esum e 1962- 63, page 2 1.)

Th ere is a simil ar rarity in Italian Somaliland, th e I lira whic h is equall y unpr epossess ing . A pair of th ese, found in a Collection by an Australian who was in K enya in W orld W ar II, has been sent for sale and will be offere d in the Januar y 4-6 London aucti on when a realisation of over £2,000 is expected.

As we go to pr ess the sta mp sensation in N ew Yor k was a new World re cord at H armers on N ovemb er 4 when, in an $87,000 sale of the " Th om as A. M atth ews" United St ates Airmails, £15, 500 was paid for a 24c. invert ed centre-a record for this error and ind eed th e high est ever for any United Stat es stamp . In th e same sale $6, 500 was paid by th e Smiths onian In stitut e for the world's first Official airborne letter carri ed some twenty-five mil es by th e balloon " Jupit er " in 1859 .

On e hundr ed and fort y-six lett er s and pamphl ets were take n on thi s pioneer air-post att empt from La fayett e, Indiana , to Crawford sville 105 years ago and thi s enve lope is th e only one known to ha ve survi ved .
