October is a Special Time Dear HRCA Community, As summer gives way to the crisp days of fall, I find myself reflecting on what an extraordinary season it has been in Highlands Ranch. This summer gave us many opportunities, and many firsts, to come together, celebrate and experience our community in new ways. Our first-ever Star-Spangled Birthday Bash Concert brought neighbors together at Highland Heritage Regional Park to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday with music, community and patriotic spirit. We also introduced our first-ever Friday Night Market at Westridge, creating a relaxed summer evening where residents could enjoy local vendors, food trucks and live music. In August, we continued the celebration with the Colorado 150 Celebration, filling Town Center with live music, local flavors and Colorado pride as we marked our state’s sesquicentennial.
October is always a special time in Colorado, and our Highlands Ranch Wilderness Area offers some particularly memorable ways to celebrate the season. Haunted Forest returns Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, bringing plenty of scares along its ¾-mile trail through the woods. On October 24, we are also thrilled to introduce two new events this year geared toward younger families. The Haunted Forest Fall Fest and The Haunted Forest Fright Lite, where guests can expect a toned-down experience with fewer jump scares, will help us bring the spirit of the season to even the youngest in our community. Thank you for making this summer so memorable. I hope to see you out enjoying everything the HRCA has planned this fall!
And, of course, it was a hot Colorado summer! I was especially pleased to see so many residents taking advantage of our pools, as well as finding solace indoors at our recreation facilities while they took part in camps and programs. Seeing families, friends and neighbors enjoying these spaces is a wonderful reminder of why the HRCA works so hard to provide exceptional recreational opportunities for all members of our community. Now, as the season turns cooler, there is plenty more to look forward to.
My best, Mike Bailey

October is Frightfully Fun at HRCA Continued from page 1. Excitement kicks off with a little mystery on Thursday, October 1, at the sold-out Cold Cases and Cocktails. Runners will hit the paths on Saturday, October 3, for the Wildcat Mountain Trail Races, with distances for everyone from young runners to seasoned trail racers. And don’t forget the Highlands Ranch Farmers’ Market, continuing Sundays throughout the month. Adventure moves to the big screen Wednesday, October 7, when Mountainfilm on Tour returns with an inspiring collection of short films celebrating adventure, resilience and the human spirit.
Later in the month, get ready for a musical showdown at Dueling Pianos on Wednesday, October 21, where two talented performers go key-to-key for an evening of high-energy entertainment. Then things get spooky. The Highlands Ranch Wilderness Area transforms Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, with its Haunted Forest Fall Fest, Haunted Forest Fright Lite, and Haunted Forest. Pick your scare level—from family-friendly fall fun to a three-quarter-mile walk through the woods where you may discover you’re not quite as brave as you thought. If you’re looking for a spooky drive, our Haunted Hayrides may fit the bill. Prefer your October spirits in a glass? Oaked and Smoked returns Saturday, October 24, pairing whiskey tastings with hearty BBQ. On Wednesday, October 28, Coffee with a Cop offers families a relaxed opportunity to visit with local law enforcement while little ones get creative. Finally, costumes and dancing shoes are highly encouraged for the Therapeutic Recreation Spooktacular Halloween Dance on Friday, October 30. Dress as something silly, spooky or spectacular and dance the night away with friends. Then, on Halloween morning, prepare for a night of treats with Paranormal Pedal, a cycling experience that closes the HRCA’s supernatural festivities. Or, lace up your running shoes for the Backcountry Wilderness Half Marathon. From trails and treats to music, movies and monsters, October at HRCA has a little something for everyone. The only question is: how much fun can you scare up before Halloween?

“They Are Her People.” That’s how Jenny Fraikor describes the community her daughter, Gabby, has found through Therapeutic Recreation (TR) at HRCA. For nearly 20 years, TR has been an important part of Gabby’s life, giving her opportunities to build confidence, make friends and find a place where she belongs. Gabby’s journey began with swimming, a sport she has always loved. She excelled on HRCA’s Special Olympics Swim Team, eventually taking that confidence to the ThunderRidge High School swim team. Her involvement soon expanded beyond the pool. Gabby joined the Side of Ranch Dance Team and began attending TR dances at 16, with the Valentine’s and Halloween dances being among her favorites. These activites help Gabby connect with friends of all ages and ability levels. HRCA has also become Gabby’s workplace. Since she was 17, she has worked in several roles at Westridge Recreation Center, where supportive coworkers and managers have helped her continue building confidence and independence. For Gabby, TR has become more than a program. It’s where she found confidence, connection and a community to call her own.

Holiday Banner Contest HRCA is excited to announce the second annual Holiday Banner Art Contest, running Thursday, October 1, through Saturday, October 31! We’re inviting children across the community to showcase their creativity by designing artwork that answers the question: What do the holidays in Highlands Ranch mean to you? Young artists are encouraged to let their imaginations shine through colorful, festive and original designs that capture the joy of the season. Submissions will be judged in three age categories: ages 3–6, 7–10 and 11–12. One winner will be selected from each group, and their artwork will be transformed into a holiday banner. The winning banners will be proudly displayed throughout Town Center for the entire holiday season, spreading cheer for all to enjoy. Don’t miss this opportunity for your child’s art to light up Highlands Ranch in a truly special way! Scan the QR code to download the art template. HOLIDAY BANNER TEMPLATE

HRCA Tennis Pavilion Accepts Award On Tuesday, September 1, USTA announced that the HRCA Tennis Pavilion in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, was one of 41 winners in the USTA’s annual Outstanding Facility Awards program, which recognizes excellence in the construction and/or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country. All 41 recipients were honored at an awards reception held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York as part of the 2026 US Open.
HRCA’s Head Tennis & Pickleball Professional, Frank Adams (right), receives the Outstanding Facility Award by Christian Gabriel, USTA’s Managing Director of National Infrastructure Strategy, on Tuesday, September 1, in New York.
“Facilities like HRCA Tennis Pavilion are the foundation of tennis in America. Their commitment to creating welcoming, inclusive opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to experience the sport exemplifies what it means to grow the game at the grassroots level,” said Theodore Loehrke, Managing Director, Head of Section Partnerships, USTA. “Their work is helping to ensure tennis continues to thrive in their community.”
Facilities were judged on the following criteria: overall layout and adaptation to site; excellence of court surface and lights; ease of maintenance; accommodations for players, spectators and press/officials; aesthetics; graphics (including the use of signs and landscaping); amenities such as casual seating for spectators, food services and social areas; and the facilities’ participation in grassroots tennis programs. Nominated facilities were voted on in the following categories: Public Courts that are either small tennis centers with 2-11 courts or large tennis centers with 12 or more courts; Private Facilities that offer both USTA and public programming designed to help grow tennis (small: 2-11 courts; large: 12 or more courts); Educational Institutions such as colleges, universities, public and private grade schools, middle schools, or high schools; and Innovation, which recognize facilities that have been particularly innovative when it comes to delivering tennis. As a (category) winner, HRCA will receive a wall plaque and an all-weather sign, which can be mounted at the facility.
