Turkey time is right around the corner! I hope everyone takes time this month to reflect on things in which they are thankful. One of my thanks this year will certainly be for the beautiful community of Highlands Ranch and all the hard working members in the community that have contributed their time to the HRCA. There are plenty of activities this month that will kick off the holiday festivities. First is the Backcountry Half Marathon, Jewelry and Holiday Gift Fair, and Sip and Savor on November 2, the Classical Music Series on November 14, Adult Health Fair on November 9 and the Nutcracker Highlights performances on November 23. Please check our calendar for more details on these events at www.HRCAonline.org/Events.

Budget: This year’s budget is anticipated to have an assessment increase. At the time of writing this, the amount has not been determined. The Assessment increase will fund both the Administrative and Recreation Funds, fund staff costs associated with mandated minimum wage increases and ongoing upkeep maintenance projects for all four recreation centers. Additionally, the increase will allow us to continue to set aside funds for our capital and reserve projects that will help keep our facilities updated and operational. These types of initiatives are critical to keeping our home values high. Keep an eye out for emails, regular mail and on our website to stay up to date on everything budget!

The draft budget was posted in mid-October for homeowners to review at www.HRCAonline.org/Budget. The 2020 budget was presented to Delegates at the October 15 meeting and a final budget will be adopted at the Board of Directors meeting on November 19.

Fencing: HRCA Residential Improvement Guidelines (RIGs) require that all fencing be regularly maintained. The RIGs specify one permitted stain color, Highlands Ranch Fence Brown, as adopted by the HRCA Board of Directors in June 2018. Some sub-associations (i.e., Firelight, The Hearth, Falcon Hills, Timberline, and Falcon Hills South) require a different fence stain color, so please be sure to check with your sub-association if you have one to ensure your fence color is compliant. All fences must comply with this guideline and homeowners are required to submit an application for approval to the CIS Department before staining fences. Volunteer of the Month - Oktoberfest Volunteers Thank you to all of the families who volunteered at the Oktoberfest booths to get the word out about HRCA programs! It was great to educate our community about everything the HRCA has to offer. Thank you also to all the staff and residents that participated in the Oktoberfest celebration. The warmer weather brought out a large crowd this year and helped raise money to fund the Highlands Ranch Cultural Affairs Association (HRCAA) fund. The HRCAA looks forward to providing more educational, artistic, musical, theatrical, and dance events to the more than 100,000 Highlands Ranch residents and surrounding communities in the upcoming year. Community News Winter Property Prep Fall has officially arrived and is the ideal time to prepare your lawn and landscaping for the upcoming winter season. Here are some tips to help you prepare: • Aerate and/or dethatch your lawn • Restore bare spots or re-sod the entire lawn • Apply a winter fertilizer to give your lawn a head start for the Spring • Prune and remove dead tree branches • Plant trees and shrubs to become well-established before the winter freeze begins • Before shutting down the sprinklers, give your lawn a good watering to prevent root damage that can occur over the winter • Disconnect your hoses and have your sprinkler system blown out to prevent pipe freezing For more information or specific questions about your landscaping, you can call the Master Gardeners at Colorado State University Cooperative Extension of Douglas County at 720-733-6935 or email mgardenr@douglas.co.us.

Fall is also a good time to assess your property in order to plan and budget for future maintenance needs. We recommend that you check your home for the following: • Inspect to see if your home will require painting in the near future or if there is any exposed wood that needs repaired.

• Check all roofing and gutters for needed repairs/maintenance.

• Check fencing for broken pickets, boards, water damage and general maintenance.

Trash Can Placement Help keep our neighborhoods clean and safe! Be place your trash cans in the gutter for pickup, not on the sidewalk. Placing them in the gutter ensures the sidewalks are clear for pedestrians. Also be sure to put a lid on your trash container to keep it contained.

Enjoy a New Holiday Light Experience with Your Family This Christmas season create a new tradition for your family, friends and neighbors at Denver’s largest drive through holiday light experience. Premiering November 24, Cherry Hills Community Church, along with HRCA, invites the community to experience the “Light that Leads You Home” - a spectacular Christmas light display on the Cherry Hills campus depicting the moving story of one family’s Christmas traditions across the generations.

The display will be open nightly from November 24 through December 24 (closed during services) from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. Donations will be accepted for eliminating homelessness and poverty in south Denver. The display is free to the public, but tickets are required for entry. Tickets are available starting November 4 at www.cherryhills.com.

Holiday House Decorating Do your Christmas decorations put Clark Griswold to shame? Well, show everyone in Highlands Ranch by adding your home to HRCA’s Holiday House Decorating Map! Take a photo of your Highlands Ranch home at night while lit and decorated, and submit the online form (where you will upload the photo) by 5:00 p.m. on December 16. The home address and photos will be posted on www.HRCAonline.org/HolidayHouse with a map showing the location of each entry. Everyone is invited to view the festive sights and lights!

SCHEDULE YOUR colorado gives day DONATIOn The Highlands Ranch Cultural Affairs Association (CAA) is a nonprofit managed by HRCA to produce over 40 cultural, historic, and educational programs and events annually, including Highlands Ranch Days, Oktoberfest, the Summer Concert Series, Culture on the Green, and many others.

The CAA also funds the annual Art Encounters outdoor sculpture program in Highlands Ranch.

From the Page to the Stage with the Colorado Ballet On November 7, the Colorado Ballet will present From the Page to the Stage at Southridge Recreation Center. from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. This one-hour, family-friendly assembly will feature excerpts from ballets based on folk tales and literary classics such as Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, and Peter Pan. The audience will have the opportunity to learn about how stories are translated into dance, a brief history of ballet, and more, including a question and answer session with the dancers. Nutcracker Highlights The Highlands Ranch Cultural Affairs Association (CAA) presents a holiday must-see, the Nutcracker "Highlights”. This is one Christmas tradition that many families enjoy year after year. The International Youth Ballet returns to Highlands Ranch to perform one-hour performances of The Nutcracker Suite; perfect for families with small children! Each child will receive a nutcracker to take home! This performance will leave little ones with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads! Classical Music Series The Classical Music Series continues with the “All About that Bass”. The bass line is always such a vital part of music everywhere, and yet it is rare to find the double bass itself included in the classical chamber music repertoire. Join us as we first feature the diverse sonorities of fascinating Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff’s Concertino for Flute, Viola, and Bass.

Then, stick around as we present our version of Tchaikovsky’s famous string sextet “Souvenir de Florence”, with the string bass providing depth and energy that adds a whole other dimension to the work. Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Is HERE FOR YOU! The HRCA Therapeutic Recreation (TR) programs are intended to enhance the quality of life of individuals with special needs. Our goal is to challenge participants, support general independence, choice, selfdetermination, and self-confidence.

November will bring indoor soccer and unified basketball fun on Wednesdays at Southridge. These sports programs focus on good sportsmanship and teamwork. Classes, camps & activities Northridge Tennis Pavilion – HRCA’s Destination for Tennis, Fitness & Fun! Don’t miss out on the fun! HRCA’s twice monthly tennis socials have moved back to Northridge for the cooler months. Tennis socials are held from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. on alternating Fridays on the indoor courts at the Northridge Tennis Pavilion. Highlands Ranch Taekwondo IIf you haven’t checked out the Taekwondo studio at Northridge – now is the time! From beginners to advanced, ages 4 to 99+, we have a Taekwondo class for you! HRCA Hosts High School Swim Teams HRCA once again welcomes the Rock Canyon, Thunder Ridge, Mountain Vista, and Highlands Ranch High School Girls Swim Teams. The Westridge, Eastridge, and Northridge Recreation Centers are the hosts for the schools for training during November, December, and January. All home meets are hosted on Tuesday and Thursday or Saturdays at Northridge. During February, March, April, and May, HRCA hosts the local High School Boys Swim Team. Please check with the pool schedules available at each recreation center, as well as on the web site at www.HRCAonline.org for a detailed schedule of when the swim teams will be at each facility.

The Power of ART As Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is more powerful than knowledge”. As the cool temperatures settle in, it’s time to give your children and yourselves an opportunity to nurture the imagination. HRCA offers a variety of art and pottery programs to suit all ages and family schedules. This chilly, fall month try enrolling in Harvest Buddies or Turkey Time both of which are pottery classes for 3-5 year olds. We also have a variety of hand building and wheel classes for teens to adults. Our November session of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpting for children ages 6-11, or beading, knitting, drawing, painting, and watercolor for adults will be sure to inspire some seasonal creativity! Leaves are on the ground, snow is beginning to fall, and you want to find a fun, engaging activity for your little one! Consider our Creative Kids classes held over at Westridge! Adult Seminars HRCA offers a variety of adult seminars on important topics for you and your family. This month, we’re offering Retirement Planning Today. This is an interactive workshop to help you make sense of the choices you face in building your future and planning for retirement. On November 6, we’re offering Living Trust seminar. This workshop will discuss the 10 reasons for getting a living trust. We are also offering Wellness Workshops and November’s topic is Emotional Support. For those getting ready to travel for the holiday season, we have our Travel Hacking 101 Workshop on November 12. Back the Backcountry Day: November 14 Back our effort to fund the conservation and environmental education efforts of the Backcountry Conservation & Education Fund! We're on a ONE DAY quest to have 200 individual donations made in a 24-hour period. Whether it's a $1 donation, $1,000 donation, or somewhere between, Back the Backcountry Day will bring awareness to the exciting projects coming out of the Backcountry Conservation & Education Fund including increased fire mitigation, funding the Future Conservationists Initiative which brings no-cost environmental education to local second-grade classrooms, wildlife habitat improvements, and more. Join us for a Back the Backcountry party at Living the Dream Brewing Co. on November 14 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. There will be live music, gear deals, and BIG giveaways like a Yeti cooler and bike from Elevation Cycles! Experience the magic of summer camp on a cold winter evening on November 22 , 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Southridge Recreation Center! For $5.00 drop off your camper for a night of our favorite camp games, crafts, pizza, and awesome camp gear giveaways.
