Welco me The mare comes first
Ask any breeder who has built a programme how long it took before they achieved consistent results, and the honest answer is measured in decades, not seasons. This is the biggest challenge for breeders at the centre of this sport. A stallion can be chosen in an afternoon, but a damline cannot be conjured into existence; it can only be built, mare by mare, decision by decision, across a span of time most people never get the opportunity to see through. This is what makes a broodmare auction unlike any other opportunity in showjumping. When you buy a young horse, you buy potential. When you buy a competition horse, you buy a current result. When you buy a broodmare from a proven line, you buy something rarer: the years someone else has already invested in getting it right. Henning Pretorius has spent decades doing exactly that, watching what wins at the highest level in Europe and breeding deliberately towards it. The mares in this catalogue are not incidental to our programme; they are the programme. Each mare is offered in foal to one of our young stallions, chosen for the modern sport, so that what you are buying is not one generation but two: a proven mare, and a first foal already shaped by some of the most considered breeding decisions being made in southern Africa today. We invite you to study them closely, their lines, their progeny and the foals they carry. This is an opportunity you can’t get again.
T he M are C o me s Fir st An introduction to our Capital Stud Broodmare Auction
There is a phrase Henning Pretorius returns to often, and it is worth beginning with it here:
“ Bl oo d d o e sn ’t l ie . ”
It sounds obvious until you consider what it actually demands of breeders in this industry. This statement demands enormous patience from anyone who wants to succeed. It demands the willingness to look past trends, past noise, past the seduction of a single exceptional result, and to ask instead what a mare has consistently produced, what her mother produced, what her grandmother produced, and whether the pattern holds. It demands, above all, the discipline to know that you are not building for this season, but for the next decade. This is the philosophy at the foundation of Capital Stud, and it is the philosophy behind the broodmares being offered in this Auction.
T h e m are at th e cen t re The history of showjumping breeding has long placed the stallion front and centre. This is understandable stallions are visible, their records are public, their offspring numerous and easy to study. But amongst the most sophisticated breeders in the world, a different view has been gaining ground for some years now: that the damline is not secondary to the stallion, but prior to him. The mare comes first. The logic is straightforward. A dam-line tracks the succession of mares from a particular foundation mare, often exceptional in her own right, but ultimately judged on what she passes forward. When a mare from a proven dam-line is put to the right stallion, the result is not luck. It is the predictable outcome of selecting for quality across generations. As the saying goes: quality breeds quality.
The breeder’s task, then, is to identify which branches of a dam-line show the greatest consistency, and to select the stallion not as the centrepiece of the programme but as a complement to the mare, enhancing her strengths, counteracting her weaknesses, refining rather than replacing what she already carries. This is what Henning Pretorius has spent decades doing. The mares offered in this auction are not incidental to Capital Stud’s programme. They are the programme.
Wh at you are act ually b uying A broodmare auction is unlike any other kind of purchasing opportunity in this sport. When you buy a young horse, you are buying potential uncertain, exciting, dependent on training and time and fortune. When you buy a competition horse, you are buying a current result. When you buy a broodmare, you are buying something rarer and more durable: you are buying a foundation. Dirk Zagers, who has been involved with
European Warmblood breeding for years, put it with characteristic directness when asked about the opportunity these broodmare auctions represent: If you start breeding from scratch today with a mare without a proven damline, it’ll take you 20 years before you are really getting it right. You’ll be running behind the trends the whole time. Henning is selling mares that have a ‘proper’ damline and who have already proved they can produce new generation offspring that can make it to the top in the sport. Henning has invested the time for you by figuring it all out over the years. When you buy a broodmare on this auction, you’re buying time so that you can get ahead. This game doesn’t stand still.
HQ P hotography
This is the essential truth of what is on offer here. These mares are not starting points. They are established lines, carefully built over years of selection, now being made available to buyers who wish to accelerate their own programmes rather than begin at the beginning. In foal to Capital Stud’s young stallions, each chosen for their relevance to the modern sport, these mares carry with them not only their own proven genetics but a first foal already shaped by some of the most considered breeding decisions being made anywhere in southern Africa today.
Why n ow an d why th e s e st alli ons The showjumping sport has changed profoundly over the past decade. Lighter poles, shallower cups, more technical distances, and, above all, an increasingly unforgiving emphasis on speed have transformed what a competitive horse must be. The heavy, scopey types that won the Grand Prixs of fifteen and twenty years ago would struggle today. The modern sporthorse must have blood for pace, but also the intelligence to read a fence independently, the sharpness to leave the poles up, and the athleticism to recover quickly between efforts. Henning has been watching these trends from his stud base in Europe and adapting to them for years. His current roster of stallions, imported specifically for their fit with the modern sport, reflects this understanding. They are not merely fashionable names; each brings a damline and a
competition record that speaks to exactly what the international circuit now demands. The mares in this auction, covered by these stallions, represent that thinking made concrete. The result, in each case, is a foal whose genetics are not chasing the sport but anticipating where it is going.
A final word on conf ide nce There is a particular kind of confidence that comes only from knowing your material thoroughly. Henning Pretorius has been building this stud, selecting these bloodlines and refining these damlines for long enough that his choices are robust. They are considered conclusions, arrived at through decades of watching what works, at the highest levels of the sport, and replicating it with patience and precision. The mares in this catalogue are the evidence of that process. We invite you to study them - their lines, their progeny, the foals they carry - and to reach your own conclusions.
We are confident yo u will f ind, a s s o many have b e fo re yo u, th at ‘blood doe s n o t lie’.

St alli ons Our stallions – An introduction
This year’s collection is an exciting showcase of Capital Stud’s new generation of stallions; young, carefully selected sires who represent the very best of modern sporthorse breeding. While their own competition careers and progeny records are still in the making, these stallions carry world-class bloodlines proven at the highest levels, now brought onto South African soil to shape the future of our sport. Each stallion has been paired with mares for more than just pedigree on paper; Henning personally selects every combination, applying decades of experience and countless hours of research into global rankings, performance records, and damline strengths. His philosophy remains unchanged: never simply match ‘best to best,’ but create foals where the subtle, complementary traits of stallion and mare unite to produce exceptional athletes. The result? Pairings that combine the most sought-after bloodlines in the world with the precision, foresight, and attention to detail that are the hallmarks of Capital Stud’s breeding programme. The foals produced here are destined to become the leading sporthorses of tomorrow.

Bloodlines to die for!
A young stallion with a pedigree that reads like a roll of honour, Capital’s Jaures de Hus was purchased at the Flanders Foal Auction and brings a concentration of championship blood few stallions can match. His sire, Baloubet du Rouet, is one of the most decorated showjumpers in history: individual Olympic gold medallist in Athens in 2004, three times winner of the World Cup Final, and ranked the number one sire in the world on the WBFSH list in both 2012 and 2013. As a sire, Baloubet transmits his hallmark explosive power, careful technique and blood, and he is the sire of the millionaire showjumper Balou du Rouet, himself now a leading breeding stallion. The real depth, though, runs through the dam. Hera van ‘t Roosakker competed to 1.40m and is by Wandor van Mispelaere, a 1.50m stallion prized for exemplary technique and enormous scope. Hera is the daughter of Cella, the CSI5* 1.60m mare campaigned by Ben Maher, who is by Cento and out of the legendary Usha van ‘t Roosakker. Usha is one of the most influential broodmares in modern European breeding, a foundation mare of the van ‘t Roosakker dynasty that has produced international stallions and Grand Prix horses in generation after generation. To find her this close in a stallion’s pedigree is genuinely rare. Jaures stamps his offspring with every bit of that genetic potential. He is a stallion bred, on both sides, to excel at the very top of the sport. Galoubet A B aloube t du Roue t Mesange du Rouet

His second dam, Anais Anais de Muze jumped 1.50m and produced eight sporthorses (four black-type) and his third dam, Fragance de Chalus, is the legendary dam of Mylord Carthago and Bamako de Muze, and produced 19 sporthorses, including 13 black-type performers. “ The talk of the future.”
Capital Voice unites two of the most exciting genetic lines in contemporary Warmblood breeding. With Pegase van’t Ruytershof, himself a son of the celebrated Comme Il Faut, on his sire’s side, and the remarkable Cha Cha Floreval by Chacco-Blue on his dam’s side, Voice carries a pedigree that is not only elite in its own right, but deeply embedded in Capital Stud’s own breeding legacy. Pegase van’t Ruytershof is a BWP stallion whose sire Comme Il Faut stands among the most decorated and soughtafter jumping stallions of his generation. Pegase carries further greatness through his dam Gianthina van’t Ruytershof, a daughter of Cartani and the celebrated Diamanthina van’t Ruytershof, a mare whose influence on the Ruytershof family has been considerable. The result is a sire of balance, blood, and rideability, qualities that Capital Voice reflects with striking clarity. Capital Voice’s dam is Cha Cha Floreval, one of the most significant mares in Capital Stud’s own breeding history. The dam of Capital Moonlight, Capital Cornetblue Floreval Z and of Capital’s Toulouse, she is an exceptional broodmare of rare quality. Voice is the expression of elite genetics. With the blood of Comme il Faut, Chacco-Blue, Cornet Obolensky, and Ratina Z flowing through his veins, Capital Voice is a stallion built for the demands of the modern sport: sharp, bloodrich, careful, and bred to win.

“Where modern brilliance meets enduring legacy.”
Capital’s Castello Z’s pedigree reads like a who’s who of modern showjumping genetics. Combining the most influential sire in contemporary sporthorse breeding with a damline built on the legendary Darco, Castello Z is a stallion of rare depth, competitive substance, and long-term sire potential. What sets Chacco-Blue apart as a breeding stallion is the remarkable consistency with which he transmits his most prized qualities: an exceptional temperament, natural carefulness, and a scope and technique that translates directly to the biggest arenas in the world. These traits are clearly evident in Castello Z. Castello Z’s damline anchors his pedigree in the kind of proven, generational performance that serious breeders seek. Darco’s mares are prized as broodmares precisely because they reliably produce horses with his trademark scope, bravery, and competitive will. Castello Z represents the convergence of two of the sport’s most celebrated bloodlines - Chacco-Blue’s modern brilliance and Darco’s enduring heritage - in a package designed to produce horses of genuine scope, intelligence, and competitive tenacity.

Alabama
New to the Capital Stud stallion roster
This three-year-old is by Aganix du Seigneur, who jumped to 1.60m with Jos Lansink before an injury turned him to breeding, where he has become one of the most sought-after jumping sires in Europe. Aganix’s stamp is scope and a careful, rounded technique, passed on with absolute consistency. The strength here, though, runs through the dam. Cha Cha Floreval is a daughter of Chacco-Blue, the stallion who topped the WBFSH jumping sire ranking from 2017 and has held the top end ever since. She has already produced Capital Moonlight, who jumped to 1.55m with Kelly O’Connor, along with the young stallions Capital Cornetblue Floreval Z and Capital Toulouse. Behind Cha Cha sits the Holstein power of Berlin, a Cassini I son and World Equestrian Games Team Gold medallist, through the mare Pilaspa. One more generation back, the third dam Pilonia produced Chamberlain at 1.55m and Marolot PS at 1.50m. Ultimately, then, Capital Alabama is by a proven sire line over a damline that produces at the top of the sport. It might be early in Alabama’s own story, but the horses his family has already put in the ring tell you what he is bred to do.

09.04.2014 | 168.5cm | Bay | Due: 18.11.2026 In Foal to: Capital Legacy
1 01
Capital Oulana is a tall, correct twelve-year-old bay mare, carrying one of the deepest damlines in this catalogue. She is a granddaughter of Julana, a Ramiro Z mare who featured prominently in several breeding programmes; Julana is the dam of the 1.45m jumpers Culana Z and Cordulano Z, and of the Capital broodmares La Lucia and Capital Mulana. Julana’s sire, Ramiro Z, needs no introduction; he is one of the foundation jumping sires of the modern warmblood, giving this bloodline serious weight.
Oulana’s sire, Fidjy of Colours, brings a modernising jumping influence, and damsire, Nonstop, adds the rideability and technique the family is known for. Oulana is in foal to Capital Legacy, the product of a legendary pairing, Capital Levubu and Capital My Lady. Oulana, then, is a foundation quality broodmare in foal to a powerhouse Capital stallion; this mare and her future foal are remarkable breeding assets for any programme.

Chapowe e Capital Colnardo x Casall x Coriano
12.12.2013 | 164cm | Bay | Due: 07.12.2026 In Foal to: Capital Legacy

Capital Chapowee’s pedigree is built on serious jumping blood. Her damsire is Casall, one of the most successful and influential jumping stallions of the modern era, campaigned at the very top of the sport before becoming a coveted sire. That Casall influence, sitting directly behind her, is the headline of Chapowee’s page, with the Coriano line beneath adding further jumping substance through her granddam Melissa II.
On the sire side, she is by Capital Colnardo. Colnardo’s daughters appear more than once in this sale, placing Chapowee within a small group of related mares carrying the same powerful paternal influence that we have seen produce top-quality horses again and again. Chapowee is in foal to Capital Legacy. Legacy combines natural balance with plenty of scope and power, and his rider Nicole Horwood describes him as ‘careful, athletic and expressive yet uncomplicated to ride’. What Nicole rates most is his brain: ‘confident without being overreactive, brave without becoming strong, and naturally relaxed and trainable’. Over a correct mare like Chapowee, whose Casall and Coriano blood supplies even more jump, that combination of scope and rideability is exactly what showjumpers are looking for. We have high hopes for this foal.

A proven producer, Capital Catriana has already left her mark on the programme, with Capital Cole (1.30m), Capital Quintarius and Capital Heartly among her foals. A broodmare who has shown she can breed jumpers is worth more than her pedigree on paper, and Catriana has done exactly that.
Yet, her pedigree on paper also more than holds its own. Her dam, Alzu Santa, is the dam of Capital Opal (1.30m), and her granddam, Alzu Lasana, produced Alzu Sandstorm. Catriana’s sire, Capital Colnardo, adds another dimension: a son of Colman out of Holsteiner Stamm 1020, a line responsible for 1.60m horses, Colnardo, who himself jumped 1.60m under Jennifer Gates in the USA, is prized for rideability, scope and an amateur-friendly temperament, Capital Catriana is in foal to Capital Legacy. On a mare who has already put jumpers on the ground, that pairing of scope with modern athletic ability and a genuinely trainable temperament is a considered one. For a buyer who wants proof rather than promise, Catriana is one of the safest lots in the sale.

Capital Scarlett is a big, imposing grey mare with a serious production record. She has already bred rising stars Capital Roscoe (1.15m), Capital Hunter and Capital Romulus, confirming her as a broodmare who passes on scope and athleticism. Her dam Alzu In Love is the dam of Alzu Osprey (1.40m), and her granddam Alzu Windemere produced Alzu Belgravia, so the jumping results run down both sides of her pedigree. Her sire, Capital Shiraz, tends to bring sharpness and quality, and the Alzu mares underneath add substance and genuine power.
Scarlett is in foal to Capital’s Jaures De Hus, our grey Selle Français stallion, purchased from the Flanders Foal Auction. He is a son of the Olympic gold medallist Baloubet du Rouet. His dam, Hera van’t Roosakker, competed to 1.40m and is by Wandor van Mispelaere, a stallion known for exemplary technique and enormous scope. Capital Lynx, by Capital Levubu, offers an interesting opportunity for breeders, because her own dam, Capital Night Magic, is also on auction here. Buying Lynx means buying directly into a mother-and-daughter pair, with the chance to secure two generations of the same family in a single auction. That is a rare opportunity for anyone building a broodmare band rather than buying a single horse.
Lynx’s pedigree is anchored by Casalla, her granddam, a daughter of the outstanding jumping sire Casall and herself the dam of Capital Pyros (1.40m). Her sire Capital Levubu adds endless scope and power. Lynx is in foal to Capital My Friend. He is by Nabab de Reve, out of a Heartbreaker mare, and that pairing of Quidam de Revel blood over Heartbreaker technique is what gives him his combination of scope and carefulness. As a young mare with an elite jumping granddam, a powerhouse sire, and a foal on the way by one of the stud’s most proven stallions, Capital Lynx is a forwardlooking purchase for a breeder who wants to establish a breeding programme, or a rider looking to produce both a mare and her foal.

6 06
Capital Utessa was foaled in 2005 and has the production record of a true foundation mare. She has bred Capital Indianapolis and Capital Rouge, and her wider family is exceptional: her dam Vanessa de BD is the dam of Helderfontein Ecstasy (1.40m) and Branic Bullet Proof (1.30m), while her granddam Germania IV produced Valentino DDH (1.45m). This is a damline that has consistently thrown open showjumpers, and Corrado I behind Germania IV is one of the great Holsteiner jumping sires, a stallion whose daughters are sought after precisely because they breed on. Her sire, Capital Ulior van het Wuitenshof, adds refinement and rideability, qualities that show clearly in the mares he has left behind him, and the Filou des Mesnils cross brings French jumping blood to that Holstein foundation.
At twenty, Utessa is offered for what she has already given the sport, and the foal she carries is the most exciting part of this lot. Capital’s Castello Z is a young Zangersheide stallion by Chacco-Blue, the most influential sire in contemporary sporthorse breeding, out of a Darco mare with Heartbreaker underneath. Chacco-Blue transmits temperament, natural carefulness and a scope that translates to the biggest arenas with unusual consistency, while Darco mares are prized for bravery and competitive will. Over a mare of Utessa’s proven Holstein substance, Castello Z brings exactly the modern type, blood and rideability the market now demands without diluting the scope she has already proved she passes on. Capital Heidi is by the late Hummer van het Bevrijdthof. Hummer was noted for natural technique, scope and rideability allied to a superb temperament. His sire, Cardento, won silver at both the World and European Championships and Olympic team silver in 2004; he was awarded Elite status on the strength of his offspring. Heidi’s female line is equally impressive. Her dam, Capital Cyncinatie, is by Capital Colnardo. Behind Cyncinatie stands Al Italia, dam of four horses jumping on the circuit in Capital Callisto (1.20m), Capital Vegas (1.30m), Capital Cuba (1.35m) and Don di Stisce PDL.
Heidi is in foal to Capital’s Castello Z, by Chacco-Blue out of a Darco mare with Heartbreaker beneath. There is a deliberate piece of breeding here: Action Breaker, in Heidi’s own second generation, is a Heartbreaker son, so the foal is linebred to Heartbreaker, concentrating the technique and carefulness that line is known for, while Chacco-Blue adds modern type and temperament and Darco brings bravery and competitive will. This young mare is an exciting prospect alone, and her foal is even more so.

Capital Haylee is by Capital Homerus, the BWP stallion whose damline comes from the very successful Holsteiner line 162, the family of Carthago and Canturo, out of Cash and Lord blood; his own dam produced the winner of the Belgian Trophy for Young Horses in 2009 and a finalist in the free-jumping competition at Mechelen in 2008. Henning rates him plainly, describing his offspring as having superb rideability and scope, and that is what Homerus reliably transmits.
Underneath, Capital Ulior van het Wuitenshof adds refinement and rideability, with Land Earl bringing older substance through her granddam Capital Hazel. The result is a big, correct mare bred to carry a foal and to pass on frame. Haylee is in foal to Capital’s Barnardini JT Z, and this is a cross with real ambition behind it. Barnardini is a Zangersheide stallion by Baloubet du Rouet, one of the most decorated showjumpers of all time. Barnardini’s dam, Happy Days Z, is a full sister to the Olympic showjumper Hardrock JT Z and has produced six sporthorses including four black-type performers, while his second dam, Carte Blanche Z, is by Carthago out of a Ramiro Z mare. That Carthago blood ties neatly back into Haylee’s own Homerus line 162 heritage. Nicole Horwood describes Barnardini as a modern young sporthorse whose standout qualities are balance, rideability and adjustability, a horse who from the first ride felt far more experienced than his years. Capital Cornelia’s dam is one of the best producers at the stud. Alzu Carissa is the dam of Capital Hemmingway (1.40m), Capital Cullinan (1.30m), Capital Carina (1.30m) and the eventer Capital Cleveland (2*). Capital Cornelia’s sire, Capital Chicoletto Z, was a Zangersheide stallion who jumped successfully at the top of the sport here with a massively powerful jump and notable care. He was by Cassini II, full brother to Cassini I. On his dam’s side was Coronado, popular as a sire of approved sons, and beneath that Rebel Z, a full brother to Ratina Z, described by some as the ‘mare of the century’. Cornelia therefore carries some of the most concentrated jumping blood in the catalogue.
Capital Cornelia is in foal to Capital’s Tandoori Pommex Z, a Zangersheide chestnut by Tobago Z, twice winner of the Sires of the World and the earner of more than 2.7 million Euros in international prize money with Daniel Deusser. Tandoori’s dam, Evita van ‘t Zoggehof, jumped 1.60m with Lorenzo de Luca; his second dam, Anais Anais de Muze, jumped 1.50m; and his third dam is Fragance de Chalus, the dam of Mylord Carthago and Bamako de Muze and one of the most important broodmares in the history of the sport. Capital Hostavia is by the late Capital Hitoshi, who many of us will remember as a top 1.50m mount of Nicole Horwood. He was by Winningmood, a Darco son who competed at the highest international level with Luciana Diniz. Hitoshi’s damline ran through Sioux de Baugy to Grand Veneur, a foundational French sire credited with more than 300 showjumping winners and 74 licensed sons, among them Le Tot de Semilly and Major de la Cour.
Hostavia is in foal to Capital’s Harton v/d Berghoeve Z, a 2019 Zangersheide stallion by Heartbreaker out of a Diamant de Semilly mare, with the great Atoucha van ‘t Roosakker as granddam. Heartbreaker is a byword for technique and carefulness, Diamant de Semilly for scope and blood, and the Roosakker family is among the most influential in European breeding. Nicole Horwood describes Harton as ‘a seriously impressive young stallion with a strong frame, a massive step and exceptional natural power’. She states that he is ‘incredibly scopey and athletic with plenty of blood and fire while staying level-headed and rideable‘. Capital Hostavia’s foal thus possesses the combination of talent, blood, technique and a sensible attitude that can be expected to get to the top.

Capital Clarinda carries one of the most productive jumping damlines in the sale. Her granddam, Larobi, is the dam of Nepos van Limbo (1.60m), Kick-Off AG (1.50m), the stallion Belmondo, Easy AG Z and her dam Quinta (1.40m).
Clarinda’s damsire is Heartbreaker, one of the great transmitters of technique and carefulness in modern jumping breeding. Her sire, Capital Capriccio, is a Holsteiner by Cor de la Bryère, the foundation sire who revolutionised Holstein breeding and produced Corrado, Corland and Calypso II. Through his damsire Capitol I, Capriccio carries blood that produces both sporthorses and stallions, and his damline, 18b1, is among the best in the world. He was brave, careful, and quick, with tight front-leg technique. She has already bred Capital Lagitha and is in foal to Capital’s Castello Z. Castello Z is by Chacco-Blue, the most influential sire in modern sporthorse breeding, out of a Darco mare with Heartbreaker underneath. Clarinda’s own damsire is Heartbreaker, so the foal is linebred to Heartbreaker on both sides, deliberately concentrating the technique and carefulness that stallion is known for, while Chacco-Blue supplies modern type and temperament and Darco brings bravery and competitive will. Setting that against a dam line responsible for a 1.60m horse and a 1.50m horse makes this one of the most carefully constructed matings in the sale. Capital Kaluga is an international pedigree on both sides of the page. Her sire, Kentucky van ‘t Ruytershof, is a 2010 BWP stallion by For Pleasure, the double Olympic team gold medallist and a stallion who has topped the world sire rankings, and Kentucky himself has competed to 1.40m with Jos Verlooy. His dam is Diamanthina van ‘t Ruytershof, by Diamant de Semilly out of a Carthago mare, successful at the highest level with Constant van Paesschen and a full sister to the international stallion Emerald van ‘t Ruytershof. Diamanthina has produced three BWP-approved sons in Kentucky, Je t’Adore and Le Blue Diamond, the mark of a genuinely prepotent mare.
Her damline answers that with Holstein foundation blood and a stallion South African breeders know well. Kaluga is out of Capital Haiti (showjumping 1.30m), by Capital Hotline, who jumped 1.40m, with Capital Colby and Consuelo behind. Consuelo has sired multiple champions in this country. He is by Corofino I, a 1.60m jumper licensed across five studbooks, who is in turn by Corrado I, a 1.60m performer and one of the most significant sons of Cor de la Bryère. Consuelo’s own dam, Anna-Tevka, jumped 1.40m and is by Landgraf I, the Ladykiller xx son who stands among the true pillars of Holstein breeding. This leaves three generations of horses who performed, sitting directly behind Kaluga’s dam. Capital Kaluga is in foal to Capital’s Castello Z, by Chacco-Blue out of a Darco mare with Heartbreaker beneath. Chacco-Blue is the most influential sire in contemporary sporthorse breeding, transmitting temperament, carefulness and top-level scope with rare consistency, while the Darco damline brings bravery and competitive will. Capital Lullaby is a compact, correct grey out of a producing mare. Her dam, Capital Duet, has bred Capital Coverage and Capital Ryland, and behind her the family runs back through Capital Don Cumarco to Capital Ulior van het Wuitenshof, a stallion who adds refinement and rideability wherever he appears in these pedigrees. It is a family bred for temperament, trainability and talent.
Her sire is the well-known Capital Levubu, who is still actively competing in Europe, having recently finished third in the legendary Hickstead Derby. Levubu is by Cachas, an exceptional stallion who proved a top progenitor even after his sudden and tragic death in 2014; he was a highly modern and athletic horse noted for exceptional movement through his body, across the ground and over a fence. Lullaby is in foal to Capital My Friend, by Nabab de Reve out of a Heartbreaker mare. The Heartbreaker damline supplies technique, so My Friend combines genuine scope from his sire with carefulness from his dam. 24.06.2015 | 173cm | Chestnut | Due: 14.11.2026 In Foal to: Capital’s Harton v/d Berghoeve Z
4 14
Capital Pialotta is a tall chestnut mare with one of the most international pedigrees in the sale.
Her sire, Douglas, is a KWPN stallion by Darco out of a mare by Capitol I, which places two of the most consequential names in jumping breeding directly behind him. He was placed first in jumping at his stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf, was Champion of Ireland in his age group at four and Reserve Champion at six, and competed internationally at 1.50m with Conor Swail. As a sire, he has been emphatic: Suma’s Zorro represented Egypt at the 2014 World Equestrian Games and won the Spruce Meadows Grand Prix, Dassler won the Dublin Puissance, and Dougie Douglas sold for 1.4 million Euros at Goresbridge before winning a Grand Prix and a Nations Cup in a single weekend. Douglas has numerous approved sons, sits in the WBFSH top 100 sires, and holds the NRPS Prestatie-Fok predicate awarded on the performance of his offspring. Pialotta’s damline matches Douglas VDL in quality. Her damsire is Indoctro, among the most successful jumping sires of recent decades, and her granddam, Irones, is the dam of Virones C (1.60m). A 1.60m horse so close in the female line is serious breeding by any standard, and Pialotta has already produced Capital Qophelo, for whom we have high hopes. Pialotta is in foal to Capital’s Harton v/d Berghoeve Z, our 2019 Zangersheide stallion by Heartbreaker out of a Diamant de Semilly mare, with Atoucha van ‘t Roosakker as second dam. Heartbreaker brings technique and carefulness; Diamant de Semilly scope and blood. 03.01.2018 | 163cm | Bay | Due: 05.01.2027 In Foal to: Capital’s Barnardini JT Z
5 15
Capital Campana is a half-sister to Capital Curtesy, also in this sale, both out of Capital Hiroshia, the dam of Capital Kosmo (1.30m). A buyer able to take both would secure two branches of the same producing mare, which is worth weighing when planning a broodmare band rather than a single purchase.
Her damsire is Capital Hitoshi, who was by Winningmood out of a Sioux de Baugy mare. Winningmood is a Darco son, and Sioux de Baugy is a son of Grand Veneur, the foundational French sire credited with more than 300 showjumping winners and 74 licensed sons. Darco, Cassini I and Grand Veneur inside two generations is a concentration of jumping blood few pages in this catalogue can match. Her granddam, Palyssa, is the dam of Capital Chicoletto Z, the 1.50m jumper and stud sire, so this is a dam line that has produced a breeding stallion as well as jumpers. She is in foal to Capital’s Barnardini JT Z, a Zangersheide stallion by the Olympic gold medallist Baloubet du Rouet. Barnardini’s dam, Happy Days Z, is a full sister to the Olympic horse Hardrock JT Z and has produced four black-type performers; his second dam, Carte Blanche Z, is by Carthago out of Ramiro Z. Nicole Horwood rates Barnardini as ‘quick off the ground, naturally athletic and highly responsive, combining blood, agility, speed and power in a very modern type while staying balanced and light in the bridle’. Capital Curtesy is half-sister of Capital Campana, both out of Capital Hiroshia, the dam of Capital Kosmo (1.30m), and both offered on this Auction. She has already produced Capital Izara, by Capital Impossible, so she comes with her broodmare career underway.
Her sire, Capital Castigo, was a genuine performer. By Calato, a stallion who won championships and represented Denmark in Nations Cups and who emerged from his performance test among the highest scorers in his age group, Castigo jumped to 1.50m with Chris van der Merwe and is a three-time six bar winner, clearing 1.95m. Castigo’s damsire, Cascavelle, has produced showjumpers, stallions and top-class mares alike. Beneath Curtesy’s own dam sits Palyssa, the dam of the 1.50m jumper and sire Capital Chicoletto Z. Curtesy is in foal to Capital’s Barnardini JT Z, by Baloubet du Rouet, the Athens Olympic individual gold medallist, out of Happy Days Z, a full sister to the Olympic showjumper Hardrock JT Z. Carthago and Ramiro Z anchor the second and third dams. Nicole Horwood describes Barnardini as ‘naturally clever and uncomplicated, with the rideability, carefulness and quick thinking the modern sport demands’. Putting blood like Barnardini’s over a mare from a stallion-producing family, by a sire who has personally cleared 1.95m in a six bar, is a breeding aimed squarely at scope with temperament and intelligence attached. Capital Cassidina is one of the most proven broodmares in the sale. She has bred two open jumpers in Capital Campbell (currently 1.30m) and Capital Chaplin (currently 1.35m), along with youngsters Capital Cassiana and Capital Kennedy (currently 1.00m). Two horses at the open level from one mare is a record that speaks for itself. The production continues through her family. Her dam, Capital Urina, is the dam of Capital Harmony (1.10m) and Capital Ryden (currently jumping 1.00m), while her granddam, Rose Cottage, produced Capital Untouchable, Capital Unforgettable and Capital Domino. Her damsire, Capital Ulior van het Wuitenshof, brings refinement and rideability.
Capital Cassidina is in foal to Capital’s Harton v/d Berghoeve Z, the 2019 Zangersheide stallion by Heartbreaker out of a Diamant de Semilly mare, from the Usha van ‘t Roosakker family. Heartbreaker’s carefulness and Diamant de Semilly’s scope and blood are precisely the qualities to add to a mare who has already proved she transmits jump. Nicole Horwood describes Harton as having ‘all the blood, presence and quality you want combined with a brain that makes him a pleasure to produce’. She notes that this is ‘an unusual and valuable pairing in a stallion of his power’. This is not a speculative breeding: it takes a mare with a demonstrated open record and crosses her with a stallion bred to sharpen technique and add modern type. For a buyer who wants results rather than potential, Capital Cassidina is among the surest lots in the catalogue. Contender Capit al C onlanc Raffinesse I

R ach el Rendement x Armitage x Landfrieden
17.09.2017 | 163cm | Chestnut | Due: 16.11.2026 In Foal to: Capital’s Barnardini JT Z
8 18
Capital Rachel is a daughter of Al Italia, one of the most consistent broodmares at the stud and the dam of four horses who have jumped on the circuit in Capital Callisto (1.20m), Capital Vegas (1.30m), Capital Cuba (1.35m) and Don di Stisce PDL. Being a direct daughter of a mare who has produced four jumpers puts Rachel at the centre of a prepotent family. The results continue behind her: her granddam, Fronika, is the dam of Adalfride (1.40m). Armitage as damsire and Landfrieden beneath supply the older German substance the family is built on.
Capital Rachel’s sire is the late Rendement, described as the most decorated stallion ever to stand on South African soil. By Burggraaf out of a Zeus mare, Rendement competed at 1.60m in Europe and represented South Africa at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky with Johan Lotter, finishing his final round clear over a course where the water spanned 4.40m and the triple bar stood 1.80m at the back rail. Lotter called him ‘brave as a lion’, a horse who would try to clear whatever he was presented with from whatever approach he was given, with a temperament that was simply kind and willing. As a sire, Rendement is known for scope with unrivalled carefulness, for breeding size and rideability, and for passing on the neat hind leg and the elasticity through the body that let him always make a plan. Capital Rachel is in foal to Capital’s Barnardini JT Z, a Zangersheide stallion by Baloubet du Rouet, the Athens Olympic individual gold medallist. Barnardini’s dam, Happy Days Z, is a full sister to the Olympic horse Hardrock JT Z and has produced four black-type performers, and his damline runs back through Carthago and Ramiro Z. Nicole Horwood calls him a ‘quality young stallion with all the attributes of the modern international sporthorse: blood, power, balance, and an exceptional brain’. Baloubet’s brilliance over a Rendement daughter from a repeatedly productive family is a mating designed to lift a consistent line towards international level. Burggraaf Rendement Gipsy

Shampaigne
Capital Shiraz x Capital Capriccio x Concerto II
11.11.2009 | 164cm | Bay | Due: 09.03.2027 In Foal to: Capital Alabama
9 19
Capital Shampaigne is an established producer with three generations of 1.30m results around her. She has bred young horses, Capital Carline (currently 1.30m) and Capital Casilda (currently 1.00m); her dam, Capital Chardonnay, is the dam of Capital Chavon (1.35m) and Capital Kenzo (1.35m); and her granddam, Conquest de Marquis, produced Capital Casarey (1.30m). Consistency across a family is a better guide to what a mare will breed than a single standout result.
Her damsire, Capital Capriccio, was by Cor de la Bryère, the foundation sire who reshaped Holstein breeding and produced Corrado, Corland and Calypso II. Through his own damsire Capitol I, Capriccio carried blood capable of producing sporthorses and stallions alike, and his damline, 18b1, is among the best in the world. Capriccio was noted to be brave, careful and quick with tight front-leg technique. Capital Shiraz on top adds the sharpness and quality that this family channels well. Capital Shampaigne is the only mare on the sale in foal to Capital Alabama. Alabama is a three-year-old by Aganix du Seigneur, who jumped to 1.60m with Jos Lansink before injury turned him to breeding, where he has become one of the most sought-after sires in Europe; his stamp is scope and a careful, rounded technique passed on with real consistency. Even greater strength runs through Alabama’s dam: Cha Cha Floreval is a daughter of Chacco-Blue, and she has already produced Capital Moonlight, a 1.55m jumper with Kelly O’Connor, as well as the stallions Capital Cornetblue Floreval Z and Capital Toulouse. Behind her sits the Holstein power of Berlin, a Cassini I son and World Equestrian Games team gold medallist, through the mare Pilaspa; a generation back, Pilonia produced Chamberlain at 1.55m and Marolot PS at 1.50m. It is early in Alabama’s own story, but his family tells us what he is bred to do. Over a mare whose family produces at 1.30m in three successive generations,
this is an ambitious cross.

Holley
Capital Hitoshi x Cascavelle x Royal Bravour
30.01.2013 | 163cm | Grey | Due: 30.09.2026 In Foal to: Capital’s Castello Z
0 20
Capital Holley is a proven mare, dam of Capital Cipriana (1.30m) and Capital Reese (currently 1.10m), from a damline the stud’s own records trace to the family of Nabab de Reve, one of the most significant breeding stallions of the modern era. Her sire, Capital Hitoshi, is by Winningmood, a Darco son who competed at the highest international level with Luciana Diniz. Darco is among the most influential jumping sires of the modern era, and Hitoshi’s damline runs through Sioux de Baugy to Grand Veneur, the French sire behind more than 300 showjumping winners and 74 licensed sons. Her damsire, Cascavelle, is a proven producer of showjumpers, stallions and top-class mares.
She is in foal to Capital’s Castello Z. Castello Z is by Chacco-Blue out of a Darco mare, and Holley is by a Darco grandson, so the resulting foal is linebred to Darco on both sides. This kind of duplication is used deliberately, to fix the scope, bravery and competitive will Darco is known for, while ChaccoBlue supplies the modern type, temperament and carefulness the sport now demands. For a buyer who thinks in terms of concentrating desirable blood rather than simply combining good names, Holley’s foal is shaped for the big time.

Night Magic Douglas x Casall ASK x Carolus I
03.07.2013 | 165cm | Chestnut | Due: 17.11.2026 In Foal to: Capital Legacy
1 21
Capital Night Magic is offered alongside her own daughter, Capital Lynx, giving buyers the chance to acquire two generations of the same family, or to choose between them. For anyone building a band rather than buying a single horse, this is one of the most significant opportunities in the catalogue.
Night Magic is by Douglas, a KWPN stallion by Darco out of a mare by Capitol I, two of the most consequential names in modern jumping breeding. Douglas was placed first in jumping at his stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf, was Champion of Ireland in his age group at four and reserve champion at six, and competed internationally at 1.50m with Conor Swail. His record at stud is emphatic: Suma’s Zorro went to the 2014 World Equestrian Games and won the Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows, Dassler won the Dublin Puissance, and Dougie Douglas sold for 1.4 million euros at Goresbridge before taking a Grand Prix and a Nations Cup in a single weekend. He has numerous approved sons, sits in the WBFSH top 100 sires and holds the NRPS Prestatie-Fok predicate, awarded on the strength of his offspring. Night Magic’s damline is equally strong. Her dam, Casalla, is a daughter of Casall, one of the outstanding jumping sires of the modern era, and is herself the dam of Capital Pyros (1.40m). Her granddam, Uleika I, produced Mortimer (1.40m). Results at 1.40m in successive generations, on both branches, indicate consistency rather than good fortune. Capital Night Magic is in foal to Capital Legacy, by Capital Levubu out of Capital My Lady. Legacy is athletic and powerful with enormous scope and a temperament to match, and Nicole Horwood singles out his willingness: focused in his work, and a pleasure to produce both under saddle and on the ground. Darco and Capitol I on one side, Casall on the other, and Legacy’s scope and brain on top make Night Magic one of the highlights of the sale.

Capital A Star x Royal Bravour x Artichaut
15.10.2009 | 159cm | Bay | Due: 15.10.2026 In Foal to: Capital’s Castello Z
2 22
Capital Asia is a proven producer; she has already bred Capital Renegade (1.20m) and Capital Raven, so this is a mare who has put jumpers on the ground rather than one still trading on pedigree alone.
Her sire, Capital A Star, is one of the stud’s most reliable damsires, a son of Argentinus known for stamping correct conformation, scope and a competitive temperament generation after generation. Behind Argentinus sits Grannus, one of the great Hanoverian influences, so the top of her page carries classical German jumping depth. Her own damline is unusual and worth reading closely: her damsire Royal Bravour traces to Ramiro, and her granddam Melodie en Fa is one of the most celebrated producers in the sport and the dam of Nabab de Reve. It is genuinely remarkable to have a damline of this standing on South African soil. Asia is in foal to Capital’s Castello Z, by Chacco-Blue out of a Darco mare with Heartbreaker beneath. Chacco-Blue is the most influential sire in contemporary sporthorse breeding, transmitting temperament, carefulness and top-level scope with rare consistency, while Darco brings bravery and competitive will. Over a mare carrying Argentinus depth and Melodie en Fa blood, this is the classical meeting the modern: a proven producer crossed with one of our exciting young sires for a foal bred to carry every attribute of an elite modern sporthorse. 30.12.2019 | 165cm | Bay | Due: 20.02.2027 In Foal to: Capital’s Tandoori Pommex Z
3 23
Capital Montana is a young mare with a notably strong sire. Capital My Friend is by Nabab de Reve, a son of Quidam de Revel and a major breeding force in his own right, out of a Heartbreaker mare, a combination that produces scope from the sire side and technique from the dam. Montana’s own dam, Capital Cora, is the dam of upcoming talents Capital Marvin (currently 1.10m) and Capital Rohan. Her damsire, Capital Capriccio, brings Cor de la Bryère and Capitol I, two of the most consequential names in Holstein breeding, together with damline 18b1. This provides a solid foundation of jumping blood beneath a modern top line.
Montana is in foal to Capital’s Tandoori Pommex Z, a young Zangersheide chestnut by Tobago Z, a two-time winner of Sires of the World and the earner of over 2.7 million Euros with Daniel Deusser. Tandoori’s dam jumped 1.60m with Lorenzo de Luca, his second dam 1.50m, and his third dam is Fragance de Chalus, dam of Mylord Carthago and Bamako de Muze and one of the most influential broodmares in the sport’s history. For a buyer prepared to invest in a young mare, this pairing puts elite modern blood over a sound, proven foundation and provides a mare who may herself compete in the sport.

04.10.2010 | 170cm | Grey | Due: 06.02.2027 In Foal to: Capital’s Tandoori Pommex Z
4 24
Capital Chanella is a big grey mare of 170cm and a proven producer of Capital Keagan and Capital Karoona, from a family with a genuine top-level result: her granddam, Capital Unique, is the dam of Capital Don Castello, a 1.50m jumper. Her sire, Capital Chicoletto Z, jumped 1.50m with a powerful jump and real care. He is by Cassini II, the younger full brother of Cassini I, sire of Cumano and Berlin, and his damline runs through Coronado to Rebel Z, a full brother to Ratina Z. Chanella’s damsire, Capital Capriccio, adds Cor de la Bryère, the sire who reshaped Holstein breeding, with Capitol I beneath and the 18b1 damline. Chanella’s page is therefore built almost entirely from stallions and mares who have themselves performed or produced at the highest level.
She is in foal to Capital’s Tandoori Pommex Z, by Tobago Z, the two-time Sires of the World winner who earned over 2.7 million Euros with Daniel Deusser. Tandoori’s dam, Evita van ‘t Zoggehof, jumped 1.60m; his second dam 1.50m; and his third dam is Fragance de Chalus, dam of Mylord Carthago. Quickly De Kreisker x Verdi x Night And Day XX
01.07.2015 | 157cm | Chestnut | Due: 27.10.2026 In Foal to: Capital Voice
5 25
Capital Felicita has the most international pedigree in the catalogue. Her sire, Quickly de Kreisker, is a well-known Selle Francais jumping sire, and her damsire is Verdi, a Dutch stallion who competed at the very top of the sport and has become a significant breeding influence. More importantly, her dam performed. Epode de la Rose jumped to 1.45m, and a mare who has been round those tracks herself brings something to a breeding programme that a purely paper pedigree cannot. Her granddam, Ode a Garde, is by the Thoroughbred Night and Day xx, which adds blood, stamina and the kind of rideability that keeps a modern jumping horse performing and recovering across a big track.
At 157cm she is one of the smaller mares in the draft, which makes her a natural match for a scopey, blood stallion, and Henning has chosen accordingly. She is in foal to Capital Voice, our 2021 BWP grey by Pegase van ‘t Ruytershof, a son of Comme Il Faut, one of the most decorated and sought-after jumping stallions of his generation. Pegase’s own dam, Gianthina van ‘t Ruytershof, is by Cartani out of the celebrated Diamanthina van ‘t Ruytershof (full sister of Emerald van ‘t Ruytershof), so the sire line carries balance, blood and rideability. Voice’s dam is Cha Cha Floreval, a Chacco-Blue daughter and one of the most significant mares in Capital Stud’s own history, dam of Capital Moonlight, Capital CornetBlue Floreval Z and Capital Toulouse. Comme Il Faut, Chacco-Blue, Cornet Obolensky and Ratina Z all run through his pedigree. Crossing a French- and Dutchbred mare whose own dam jumped 1.45m with a stallion of that quality gives a South African breeder something genuinely rare: an outcross foal with elite modern blood on both sides of the pedigree. Capital Figaro d’Isigny x Numero Uno x Carthago
23.11.2019 | 169cm | Bay | Due: 06.02.2027 In Foal to: Capital’s Tandoori Pommex Z
6 26
Capital Florida is a young mare carrying a page full of names that have shaped the sport. Her granddam, Olympia XIII, is a daughter of Carthago, the Holsteiner stallion who won Nations Cups at Aachen, Rotterdam and La Baule with Jos Lansink, competed at the Atlanta Olympics and became one of the most important sires of his generation, notably of Mylord Carthago. Olympia XIII jumped 1.30m herself, so she is a performer as well as a producer. Florida’s dam, Nikita van het Keizershof, is by Numero Uno, an influential Dutch sire known for producing rideable, scopey horses. Her sire Capital’s Figaro d’Isigny jumped to 1.35m with Nicole Horwood prior to his sale, and Figaro’s full sister jumped at Grand Prix with Steve Guerdat.
Capital Florida is in foal to Capital’s Tandoori Pommex Z, by Tobago Z, twice winner of the Sires of the World and the earner of more than 2.7 million Euros in international prize money. Tandoori’s third dam is Fragance de Chalus, the dam of Mylord Carthago, who is himself a Carthago son. Crossing Tandoori with a Carthago granddaughter therefore linebreeds gently to Carthago, concentrating the scope and carefulness that family is known for. A wellconceived mating on a young mare with a long career ahead of her.

Capital Stud will provide the prospective bidder with the opportunity to view the broodmares, prior to the Auction, at Summerhill Equestrian. 1.2. Clo s ing Wo rd s Breeding is a long game , and nothing in these pages happened quickly.
Every mare in this collection is the product of years of searching and selecting, and every pairing a decision made in the knowledge that the foal it produces may still be competing a decade from now. This is the timescale Capital Stud has always worked to; not the next auction, not the next season, but the next generation. There is a particular confidence that comes only from knowing your material completely, and it is the confidence with which these mares are offered. To those who have studied this catalogue and found something worth investing in, welcome. You are not simply buying a mare. You are stepping into a programme built patiently, and without compromise, over more than twenty years, and taking your own place in a line that was here before this sale and will continue long after it. We look forward to breeding the next generation of sporthorses with you.
