At the heart of Callaho lies not only our horses, but the fellowship of our team who nurture them – this is undoubtedly the very essence, the “lifeblood of Callaho”. Across the farm and within the wider Callaho family, a rare kinship endures: forged through decades of unwavering dedication and loyal service, breathing life into every detail. It is their steadfast dedication that gives the Callaho experience its unique warmth and authenticity - a covenant of trust and purpose, harmonizing in the pursuit of excellence in breeding and raising Warmbloods for International level competition.
“lifeblood of Callaho”
At the helm of Callaho’s daily operations since 2024, Tinus Venter, Callaho’s Stud Manager has assumed overall responsibility for every facet of the stud and its ancillary activities with a career distinguished in stewardship. Together with his Maintenance Team – Ben Marumo (marking 19 years of fidelity), Wayne Duvenage, and Dawid de Klerk (both since 2025), he ensures every corner of the stud reflects the care and order that defines Callaho.
Complementing this leadership, second-generation Stud Foreman Shadrack Moeng, in his 25th year, guides the staff contingent, joined by managers Lucas Seleke and Shimmy Salobeng, who have dedicated their energies to Callaho since 2006.
“bedrock pillars on the stud farm”
Stable Management rests on four bedrock pillars: Marike Swanepoel and Johnny Smith, who have stood on the frontline of Callaho for over 17 years, now joined by Bronwyn Evans (2023) and assisted by Chaddony Duvenage (2025). Together, they are at the heart of our stable care – unfailingly devoted to the wellbeing of our horses and the safeguarding of Callaho’s precious heritage.
“We continue breeding horses of consummate quality; to raise, prepare and then hand them over to you with absolute
.”
Two stalwarts gentlemen from Callaho’s earliest days, veterinarian Dr Nico Hendrikz of Hertzogville Dierekliniek and farrier Greg Balmer have stood as unwavering custodians of our horses’ health and soundness. For over 26 years, their weekly presence at the stud is woven into the rhythm of our stable management: Dr Nico, whose instinctive gift for healing is trussed with a natural penchant for equine care, and Greg, steadfast in ensuring every foot is kept in optimal form.
Dr Nico Hendrikz | Veterinarian
To this enduring partnership is joined Peter Strong (2022) as our consulting farrier, internationally recognised for his lifetime’s contribution to corrective farriery. His expertise has safeguarded the foundation of our breeding programme from the first steps of each foal. Together, these three gentlemen embody a legacy of excellence and are the indispensable axis of Callaho’s equine well-being.
Since joining Callaho in 2017, Tani Gerber has steadily advanced through the ranks, her diligence and skill carving out a vital role within the stud. Today, she carries full responsibility for both the Breeding Department and the Training Section, managing these divisions of Callaho with the same conscientious commitment that has marked her journey from the very start.
Chatan Hendriks, Callaho’s professional rider for nearly a decade, now directs the training of our young horses and continues to work closely with the team in their development. Over the years, several more trusted members have assumed key roles, with Graham Winn overseeing our Backing and Acclimatisation Phase. A consummate professional, Graham brings exceptional knowledge and feel to the earliest stages of a young horse’s education, ensuring each one begins its journey with confidence and correct foundations.
Callaho’s Professional Auction Riders are entrusted with assessing and presenting our riding horses, ensuring each one is shown to reveal its inherent quality and athleticism. This seasoned team are all accomplished professionals with extensive experience in producing young horses. Together, they bring specialised skill and a deep understanding of the nuances required for sound, thoughtful production.
Cherricka Appelgryn and Riaan van der Merwe, now in their 6th year on the stud farm and counting, are inextricably entrenched in the Callaho fabric and are indispensable to the efficient functioning of all HR, admin and finance responsibilities.
Curated by Brand Manager, Ivana Hendriks, Callaho’s Media Team of four dedicated women safeguard and share the telling of our story. Since 2012, Vanessa Lyon has shaped the design and branding of Callaho with her steady hand and discerning eye.
Photographer and content creator, Nadine de Waal, joined in 2019 and continues to capture the life and spirit of Callaho through her lens. Junior Marketing Manager, Crystal Baldwin, added her energy in 2024, bringing detail and sensitivity to the nuances of the Callaho voice. Together, this team ensures our heritage is reflected with authenticity and care.”

“This magnificent stallion has proven himself, beyond any shadow of a doubt, to be a sire of Warmblood sport horses in a class
As a young horse in Germany, Lissabon won both sections of his Stallion Performance Test in Oldenburg. Multiple style-class winner, he received the dream score of 9.3 for his jumping style at the Bundeschampionate Finals with Johannes Ehning. During his short breeding career in Germany, in addition to scores of champion foals and state premium mares, he produced six licensed sons of which Lissaro van der Helle rewrote history after winning three consecutive Bundeschampionate Gold medals.
After progressing to the 1.50m classes as a serial winner, he was imported in 2008. It was here in South Africa with Callaho broodmares that his reputation as a legendary progenitor was truly cemented with reams of progeny now revealing exceptional promise in the open classes, including the big 1.55m tracks. Indomitable at the top of the SASJ Sire Rankings, this magnificent stallion has proven himself, beyond any shadow of a doubt, to be a sire of Warmblood sport horses in a class of his very own.

“The stuff legends are made of.”
At the time we acquired Con Coriano, we were looking for a sire to take the Callaho jumper breeding program into a whole new dimension. Correct technique and carefulness coupled to abundant scope were the overriding factors in our selection criteria at the Neumünster Approvals in 2006. We wanted a Contender. Sire of more than 165 recorded State Premium mares and over 120 known Licensed sons all over the world, we decided that no lesser stallion than a son of the King of Holstein could adequately address our aspirations. Con Coriano’s dam, Miss Coriano, was Holstein Champion broodmare and is mother of seven open showjumpers.
That Con Coriano unfailingly stamps his progeny with these qualities is beyond dispute – a stream of top showjumpers, born of a kaleidoscope of broodmares, rising with conviction through the open ranks. Today, his offspring stand as revered competitors across every division, from promising young horses to National Champions and 1.55m World Cup Qualifier performers. This is the enduring hallmark of a sire whose influence is already shaping the sport – the stuff legends are made of.

“His final score, 9.88, was the
ever achieved in the history of the Stallion Performance Test.”
In October 2007, to kickstart our dressage breeding program, Callaho travelled to the Hanoverian Stallion Körung in Germany. For Ian and Jaco, there was only one colt to consider. Hence, it was a matter of going large or going home… After being re-located back to Germany in 2011, Benicio went on to spectacularly win the 6-year-old German Dressage Bundeschampionate under young horse specialist, Anna Fiebelkorn. Six months later, he aced his Stallion Performance Test at Schliekau with perfect 10’s for walk, trot and canter. His final score, 9.88, was the highest score ever achieved in the history of the Stallion Performance Test.
Today his influence is International; from Studbook Licensings (35 licensed sons, 8 Premium and counting) to Federation Champions (Bonds at Oldenburg - 2015 and Be My Dancer at Westphalia - 2021) and auction record-setters (Best Future - €630,000 in Holland | DSP, 2021). More recently, Be Sure (DWB Champion 2022) was crowned 6-year-old Bundeschampion (2024) with Eva Möller.

“Highly
placed in several international
Grand Prixs .”
After a long and prestigious career in Europe, having been highly placed several times in International Grand Prixs, including the 2013 World Cup Grand Prix of Helsinki, this effervescent Holsteiner stallion was acquired by Callaho. Carnaval’s pedigree is as prodigious as they come. His sire, Carthago Z, needs no introduction. Furthermore, he is a product of Holsteiner dam-line 504 which has produced scores of 1.60m jumpers, including Operette la Silla who carried Jan Tops to the podium in several International Championships. More importantly though, his granddam Traumfee (Lord) is full-sister to the dam of Quaprice du Bois Margot (Quidam de Revel x Lord), firmly entrenched in the top 20 WBFSH and rising. It’s a no-brainer therefore that this Big-Time stallion has the sporting history and genetic makeup to become an extremely reliable producer of showjumpers equal to the very best.
His first offspring, now well established in the open classes, reveal themselves as formidable athletes - fearless, competitive and bearing the same generous spirit that so defined their late sire.

“Developing into horses with much substance, they are remarkably elastic with huge power over the jump.”
After successfully competing for five years at World Cup competitions, as well as two Olympic Games (Seoul and Barcelona) and two World Equestrian Games, Tolano’s father, Chin Chin, has become celebrated as a key ingredient of any showjumping pedigree. Before being imported to South Africa, Tolano himself also competed successfully at 1.60m International level in Belgium under Reggy Hoffmann, as did his brother Salto van’t Riethof (Darco). From his brief breeding career in Europe, he remarkably sired eight 1.60m jumpers from only 56 offspring, four of which were 5* 1.60m competitors: Teirra, Upendo, Taran De La Pomme and the marvellous Voyeur with Kent Farrington at the helm, runner-up at the 2014 Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen where he received the prestigious Halla Award, given to the “Best Horse of the Show.”
Tolano, although now sadly deceased, has sired a profoundly interesting handful of progeny for Callaho. Developing into horses with much substance, they are remarkably elastic with huge power over the jump.

“Casparon is a high-performance, infallible progenitor whose phenomenal scope and strong will is reliably passed on to his offspring.”
Casparon’s sire, Eurocommerce Berlin (Cassini I), under Gerco Schröder was at the apex of 1.60m International Jumping competition for many years and as a sire of International-level showjumpers, currently resides at No. 22 in the WBFSH rankings. Casparon’s dam, United Love, was a spectacular 1.60m International jumper under Olivier Guillon (FRA) before being sold to America. She is also the full sister to the licensed stallion, Catall (Catoki) and half-sister to licensed stallion, Caprisio (Carpaccio) Casparon’s exceptional pedigree, underpinned with both parents being top International 1.60m showjumpers, is truly remarkable.
Advancing to 1.55m level under Carl Boonzaaier, this majestic sire has grown in stature over the years with many placings in Grand Prix and World Cup Qualifier competitions.
His podium finish in the South African Derby stood as testament that Casparon is a high performance, infallible progenitor whose phenomenal scope and strong will is reliably passed on to his offspring. After many years observing the results of his matings, our experience has revealed that with carefully selected mares the rearrangement of complementary nucleotides yields spectacular results.

“Unfailingly producing superior showjumpers of astonishing quality.”
Corinth was sourced from the Holsteiner Stallion Licensing in 2008 by Callaho as an approved stallion. With Cormint (Calido x Carthago Z) and the thoroughbred Grundyman xx dominating his pedigree, his description by the commission as “highly modern and a sport horse type extraordinaire” was spot on. At Adelheidsdorf in 2009 he graduated with distinction at his 30-day Performance Test and qualified as a fully licenced Holsteiner breeding stallion. His sire, Cormint, was the Reserve Champion Stallion at his 2004 Neumünster approvals. Furthermore, Corinth’s two half-brothers, Cosmeo (Caretino) and Gentleman (Graf Grannus) are successful competitors in the 1.60m classes and a another four are in the open classes up to 1.50m level. That the potential for breeding success at the apex of showjumping sport is firmly embedded in his genes, is indisputable. It thus comes as no surprise that Corinth’s value as an extremely consistent sire of top level showjumpers is now solidly entrenched.
Belying his demure personality, this reserved fella has risen to the challenge at Callaho - unfailingly producing superior showjumpers of astonishing quality. Not only are they extremely rideable, they mature into long-legged, elegant athletes. Underwriting the value of his DNA, several of his daughters retained by us are now making a significant contribution to Callaho’s progress.

“Victory has an exceptional temperament coupled to outstanding rideability.”
Sourced from Fences in France as a foal in 2009, Victory for Ever is a Selle-Francais stallion sired by Corofino I , one of Holstein’s best and also full brother to Callaho Cartier’s mother. Out of a revered French dam-line, Victory’s mother is the full sister to Ephebe For Ever, who with Christian Hermon was the pillar of the French Nations Cup team for five years, including many successes at the highest International level. In addition, Russel II (Olympics 2008) ridden by Nick Skelton is the maternal half-brother to Victory . His Great Grandmother, Tanagra , is also the dam of Jalisco B , sire of the great Quidam de Revel Victory For Ever is a veritable treasurechest of jumper DNA.
A modern athletic horse with three elastic and powerful paces, Victory has an exceptional temperament coupled to outstanding rideability. To top it all off, he is very careful and shows phenomenal power and scope in his jump which he consistently passes on to his offspring.

“Rooted in a dam-line which has produced a mind-boggling number of international jumpers .”
This Hanoverian Stallion was purchased as a foal from the Verden Elite Auction in 2008. Developing into a one-of-a kind natural jumper, the result of his first outing at the 2011 Stallion Performance Test in Adelheidsdorf amply illustrates Sampras’s extraordinary qualities. Placed in the apex group of a very strong field, he was rewarded with a 9.75 out of 10.00 for his ability to jump and 9.5 for rideability.
His pedigree reads like pearls on a string…Stakkato, Libero H, Calypso II, Furioso II and then Inschallah…all rooted in a dam-line which has produced a mind-boggling number of International jumpers. His two full brothers, Safran and Wallenberg, are also licensed stallions and uterine sister, Escada (Escudo I) as well as his dam’s half-sister, Caracalla (Cantus) are all 1.60m International jumpers. It’s small wonder that this stallion, truly an outlier and now sadly deceased, produces extraordinary jumpers with such consistency. Slower to reveal their prodigious talent, they nevertheless mature into superb jumpers befitting their sire’s heritage.

“He has now firmly cemented a reputation as a true, without compromise, all-round Warmblood progenitor.”
This statuesque Holsteiner stallion was chosen from a very strong collection at the 2013 Neumunster Approvals as a refining stallion. Our requirements were to introduce a reliable reproducer who would breed size and ‘blood’ without compromising the performance DNA of our dams. Therefore the deciding factor in our selection decision was the fact that Larison’s dam-line is liberally adorned with six 1.60m International showjumpers, including his half-sister, Easy Going (Lasino) under Juan Carlos Garcia and Landaris (licensed son of Landgraf I) under Johan Philippaerts.
Well, what a revelation this lovely stallion has been. Despite his size, he is a clever, sensitive horse with much blood, a classic technique and more than enough scope for the really colossal International 1.60m classes. Surpassing even our most optimistic expectations, not only has this bona fide gentleman produced truly exceptional jumpers from the outset, he unfailingly transmits his exquisite, elastic paces which has emboldened us to also test him on our specialised dressage mares. The result has been astounding. He has now firmly cemented a reputation as a true, without compromise, allround Warmblood progenitor – a rarity in today’s world of specialised breeding. Meticulously produced by Chatan Hendriks, their steady progress up into the big 1.55m classes has left us all gobsmacked –this is genuinely a breath-taking partnership in the making.

“Endowed with a tight front-end and an extraordinary fluid bascule, he defines his descent with a flourish of elasticity.”
Sourced from the 2013 Fences Auction as a 3 year old, Bolzano’s unprepared freejumping demonstration convinced us that this audacious Selle-Francais stallion by the current WBFSH Top-20 sire, Quaprice Bois Margot, was possibly just the spice needed to add blood and hybrid vigour to the Callaho melting pot. Out of a classically bred Anglo-Arab damline that has produced many, many showjumping and eventing champions, including Salambo (Osier du Maury), Lambros (Derby d’ Oc) and Rhéa du Puy (Gral des Verniéres), we concluded that this outlier was exactly the ticket we sought.
Expertly and patiently produced by Bryce McCall to 1.30m level, this prodigy has anomalously revealed extraordinary elasticity and much scope. With his first test crop proving to be every bit as interesting as their father, it would now seem that they have all inherited their father’s intriguing personality and jumping capacity. Now that Bryce has handed the reins over to the masterful hands of Gareth Neill, this chestnut wunderkind has found himself in the spotlight. Endowed with a tight front-end and an extraordinarily fluid bascule, he defines his descent with a flourish of elasticity. Their unperturbed ascent up the grades into the 1.50m level has revealed a showman; this flamboyant chestnut stallion revels in the challenge, the bigger the question the more enthusiastically he sets his mind to it.

“An astonishing confluence of jumping genetics in anyone’s language.”
Equinox’s sire Numero Uno, the most distinguished son of the extraordinary progenitor Libero H, is now deservedly gaining traction as a jumper sire with his steady rise up the WBFSH Rankings. Furthermore and even more significant, Equinox’s mother is by 2010 Kentucky World Champion, Vigo d’Arsouilles and his grandmother, Fragrance de Chalus is arguably the most famous foundation dam in the world. Between her and her direct daughters, they have produced no less than THIRTY top International 1.60m jumpers which include Norton d’Eole (Cento), Bamako de Muze (Darco) and Mylord Carthago (Carthago Z), himself now No. 4 in the WBFSH Sire Rankings for Showjumpers. An astonishing confluence of jumping genetics in anyone’s language.
Brilliantly paired to and carefully produced by Lara Neill, this partnership kicked off their career by winning the 5th Leg of the 2019 YHPS Potential Showjumping division. A year later in 2020, showcasing his enormous potential, they went on to be placed 2nd overall. Although his competitive career was unfortunately cut short in 2022, his first progeny now being produced have indisputably revealed his specific niche in Callaho’s arsenal. We are now fully convinced that this stallion will one day rightfully take his place as one of our most interesting sires.

“The consistent quality of his offspring has now unquestionably established him as a sire of showjumpers of the very finest degree .”
This elegantly framed 2014 stallion has proven to be especially suited as a refiner for Callaho mares which tend to produce heavier type progeny. Cartier is by Casall, one of the absolute top competitors on the International jumping circuit for many years under Rolf-Göran Bengtsson. With undisputed pre-potency as a jumping sire, Casall has consistently maintained his position well within the WBFSH top ten showjumping sires in the world. No less remarkable, Cartier’s mother, Solange (Corrado I), is full sister to two International 1.60m jumpers and pillar of Holstein breeding, Corofino I and full-brother Corofino II
A slow starter, as anticipated by the lore surrounding his famous sire, he nonetheless has steadily progressed on his anticipated trajectory after claiming overall victory in the Young Horse Performance Series as a 6yr old. His move into the open classes has now been established under the skilful hands of Lara Neill.
Testimony to his pre-potency has likewise been extremely encouraging. Preliminary test matings have delivered offspring of consistent quality and are now making their way into the open divisions.

“Beautifully refined, near perfect example of the modern Warmblood Sport Horse.”
Bred at the Callaho Studfarm, Zuchthof Hollen in Lower Saxony Germany, Chupalight was beautifully produced by Dr Günther Friemel, winning all his style classes up to 1.30m level. Once proven that he was not only descended from Aristocracy but a jumper of the highest order, he was brought home to Callaho to fulfil his destiny.
A son of the highly sought-after WBFSH No. 22 sire, Catoki Z, himself a top 1.60m Showjumper under Philip Weishaupt. This pair were multiple World Cup, Grand Prix and Nations Cup Champions. Chupalight’s dam, Holla I, is also the dam of successful International jumper, Hamburg GP winner and Olympian, Chupa Chup (by Caretino). Chupalight has matured into a truly remarkable specimen of Warmblood showjumper breeding. Tall, with an ultra-refined frame showcasing his immaculate conformation, his extreme rideability and Showjumping prowess all contribute to the perfect, textbook representation of a modern stallion.
Now under the command of Chatan Hendriks’ wizardry, our Chupi has commenced what promises to be a stellar career, recently winning the Robberg Equestrian Park 1.50m Grand Prix and in the same weekend he was placed 2nd in the 1.55m World Cup Qualifier. “Innovation X’s first crop of offspring have turned out to be much more than even our most optimistic expectations.”
It was our immutable belief that the future of showjumping sport will demand horses with more blood and intelligence that underpinned our decision to acquire Innovation X, an approved breeding stallion from the Holstein Hengst Köring in November 2017. An ultra-elegant three-quarter Hotblood stallion by the Thoroughbred, Fragonard xx, Innovation X is furthermore out of Comtesse, an extremely modern dam by Chepetto, herself a half-blood. She is a product of the Holstein Stamm 4025 which is responsible for the incomparable Classic Touch (Ludger Beerbaum), as well as many famous jumpers including Deauville S (Laura Kraut), Classic Line (Andreas Ripke) and Cannelina (Eric van der Vleuten).
Innovation X’s first crop of offspring have turned out to be much more than even our most optimistic expectations: not only are they all longlined, super-refined types with the added bonus of lovely, people orientated personalities, they are superb jumpers. Watch this space. Carefully.

“This young stallion has all the makings to eventually emerge as an irrepressible competitor.”
Lord Luzius
Callaho’s anomalous fixation with the Ladykiller xx son, Lord, and specifically with his most famous son, Lord Z, has finally been requited with the acquisition of the Neumünster licensed stallion, Lord Luzius Lord Z was an extremely successful, blood-type International jumper with John Whittaker and Beat Mändli. As a sire he produced an extraordinary percentage of top 1.60m showjumpers, exemplified by 2006 Aachen Grand Prix winner, Knolte’s Kuchengirl with Marcus Ehning.
A correct and modern type with much blood, he displays an elastic canter, perfect balance and a classic freejump defined by effortless power. Back-crossed to Lord himself, twice to Carthago Z’s dam and thrice to the irrepressible Calando I, he has more than TEN 1.60m showjumpers gracing his immediate pedigree, Lord Luzius’s pure performance DNA and potential as a sire is indisputable.
Having been competently prepared for the open classes by Rainer Körber, the reins have been passed to professional phenomenon Ron Healy. “The future of South African Warmblood breeding is in safe hands .”
Covid-19 marked a watershed in South African Warmblood breeding, accelerating the evolution of online access to Europe’s most coveted showjumping damlines. It also sparked a realization that it was a perfect time to go shopping! It was thus that an exciting partnership with The Goetsch Family was initiated, enabling us to pool resources with the very specific aim of targeting the absolute best showjumping genes that Europe has to offer.
Particularly, we sought a son of Chacco-Blue, WBFSH World No.1 Showjumping Sire for six consecutive years. Renown for stamping his progeny with power and extreme rideability, we however wanted more; lightning reflexes and uncapped scope, exactly what a proven Heartbreaker x Carthago Z damline could add. Eventually, we chose a stunning colt out of Happy Days Z, a full sister to Hardrock Z, 2014 World Equestrian Games contender and 2016 Rio Olympian under Emanuel Andrade.
And so, in 2021 Con Gusto JT Z landed on African soil.
Now a five-year-old, Con Gusto is being patiently brought on by Chatan Hendriks and recently made his debut in competition. Four foals from his first test matings have us gobsmacked – their refined quality exceeds even our most optimistic expectations. This young stallion stands on the cusp of his career with every indication that the future of South African Warmblood breeding is in safe hands.

SHOWJUMPING PROTOCOL
The Showjumping star rating is evaluated by a panel of Callaho’s Professional Auction Riders during a set assessment seminar. Our seasoned team of gifted riders comprises: Chatan Hendriks, Gareth Neill, Lara Neill, Jenna Odell and Zdenek Muchna. Each of whom are competitive 1.50m showjumpers but also have extensive experience in developing young horses, equipped with specialized skills and a deep understanding of the nuances required for a sound production.
The evaluation criteria is grounded on the horse’s natural ability, taking into consideration balance, adjustability, scope and technique. All imperative as prerequisites to tackle the higher fences. The horse must have a good technique, adequate scope, be light off the ground and jump through the whither, as well as enjoy his work, giving the rider a good feeling over the jumps.
DRESSAGE PROTOCOL
The dressage star ratings are provided by Nichola Mohr, one of South Africa’s most accomplished Grand Prix riders. A multiple national champion from Novice through to Grand Prix, Nichola has produced every horse she’s competed herself — including her current star, Callaho Winston, a twotime South African Grand Prix Champion purchased at the 2013 Callaho Auction.
The Eventing star ratings are entrusted to Graham Winn, multiple South African Champion, 2010 WEG rider, and chef d’equipe of the SA team at the 2014 WEG. An accredited FEI coach with a passion for developing young horses, Graham looks for the qualities essential to the sport: correct movement for dressage, scope and adaptability in jumping, and above all, a horse that relishes cross country while giving its rider confidence.
The showing star rating was assessed by JJ Kemp. Sasa National panel showing judge as well as the Athletes Representative on the Sasa National Council. No stranger to the showing arena and reigning 2022 SA Adult Individual Showing Champion as well as 4 Overall Horse of year Ridden Supreme titles.
Each horse was evaluated using the standard “triangle” method set up on a grass surface and viewed on the right rein only.
1. A stand up assessed from both sides, front and back.
2. A walk away from the assessors for the first arm of the triangle.
3. A trot along the second arm of the triangle for the evaluation of the movement – side view.
4. A trot straight back towards the assessors on the third arm of the triangle.
5. Blemishes are taken into account as well as conformation, correctness of limbs, walk and trot paces and overall aesthetic appeal. No horse is presented under saddle for the showing assessment.
EXPLANATION OF THE STAR RATING SYSTEM
Please note that the star rating system used to indicate the utility of each horse is a subjective assessment by the Auction Riding Team. The evaluation is based on the temperament, conformation and athletic characteristics displayed by the horse when unrestricted, under saddle and during several free-jumping tests conducted in the course of the training period.
No Star The horse is not rated for this discipline or has talents which overshadow aptitude here.
One Star The horse has shown commendable ability and potential for this discipline which could improve substantially with further training and experience.
Two Star This horse consistently displays first-class aptitude for this discipline with significant potential for the higher levels.
Three Star Awarded to a horse with exceptional natural talent for this discipline. With appropriate training there is a high probability that this horse will excel at the very highest levels in a matched partnership with a skilled rider.
EXPLANATION OF THE COMPATIBILITY SYMBOLS AND INTERPRETATION OF TERMS
Novice A rider that is still developing their basic skills and lacks experience or needs to build confidence.
Competent A capable and experienced rider who posses a modicum of ‘feel’ and is adequately familiar with the training of young horses.
Skilled A sensible rider with considerable aptitude for the correct training of young horses under saddle, substantial experience and explicit natural ‘feel’.
Professional A highly skilled rider and horseman/woman with years of experience.

Not recommended
Possible, with further correct training and or rider expertise
Besides the pre-purchase veterinary check every riding horse placed on auction has had two sets of radiographs taken. Both sets are sent to Equine specialist Dr Roy Gottschalk for interpretation. The results of Dr Gottschalk’s interpretation are then referenced to grade each individual horse according to standardized norms. Both veterinary pre-purchase records as well as the radiography reports will be available for viewing prior to the auction, and will be attached to the new owners auction horse history file.
Category D & E horses are not offered for sale and those that did not pass their pre-purchase exam will be withdrawn from the auction.
Radiographs are restricted to selected views which may limit the value of the study. Interpretation is done on the images presented. Radiographic techniques may, in certain instances, limit the value of the study.
Normal radiographs do not necessarily mean that there is no pathological process present as bone abnormalities might not be evident or because soft tissue cannot be fully evaluated.
A horse may be markedly unsound in the absence of any abnormal radiographic findings. On the other hand, abnormal radiographs DO NOT imply that the lesions found are, or will be, of clinical significance.
In certain instances, in the absence of current associated clinical signs, it may be impossible to determine the prognosis or significance of radiological findings.
It can also be impossible to predict how certain lesions will develop. While given radiological abnormalities may be interpreted with leniency, it does not necessarily follow that other veterinarians will concur.
The clinical findings, together with the current and intended use and level of performance of the horse must be considered when interpreting radiographic findings.
THE CLASSIFICATION PROTOCOL CALLAHO USES IS AS FOLLOWS:
Category A: No significant radiological pathology noted.
Category B: Radiographic pathology present – inconsequential or of uncertain significance.
Category C: Radiographic pathology present – uncertain significance or amenable to surgical intervention or medical management.
Category D: Significant pathology present with questionable prognosis as a sport horse.
The + sign indicates that although the horse has been graded lower than a five star the radiographic findings are of no clinical significance.

A gift from our fabled Lissabon, this mare epitomizes what can only be acknowledged as the perfect sport horse: refined, intelligent, balanced and brave. Indeed, Lady Gaga as a proud product of our breeding vision is first and foremost supremely rideable - kind and responsive with a perfect measure of enthusiasm. Then we get to the essence of Warmblood breeding; a multi-talented sport horse undoubtedly endowed with everything needed to excel at the very highest levels of ANY of the three Olympic disciplines. Quite simply, she is exquisite.

This substantial grey gelding embodies everything that our “Vella” damline has become famous for (does the name Callaho Lexington ring a bell?) – not only do they cover a lot of ground, they are powerful horses all carrying the stamp of grandmother Ravella - big and powerful; underpinned by long-lasting dependability, enormous scope and an unrelenting willingness to work. Indeed, not only is he ‘All That’, he is so much more.
So, what’s the catch? He will need time, patience and a classic production to develop his full potential.

Clever, sassy and outrageously fun to ride, Condé Nast is quick on her feet and cool headed. A punchy powerhouse who’s intelligence and flair give her that rare “let’s go” grit which has garnered her siblings their winning ways.
Some decisions unfortunately have elements which outweigh common sense – such as our decision to let her go. Some decisions are no-brainers – her acquisition is one such.

Considered breeding is both an art and a science. Our Warmblood refiner Innovation X has unquestionably proven his capacity to bring not only blood and intelligence to his progeny, but to enhance jumping prowess. His daughter Ivette, a direct descendant of one of Callaho’s most reliable broodmares, is now in foal to Grand Prix powerhouse, Callaho’s Larison. The legs, elasticity and huge scope he will contribute to this union is predictable. Refinement meets raw power; courage meets care.

Our first mating with Callaho Chupalight hit a bullseye! D’Day’s French damline is 3-page chockablock with black-type showjumpers. In turn, Chupi’s jaw-dropping performances in the big 1.55m classes leaves no doubt regarding his influence on this pairing. Simply put, this is a gelding with unlimited potential – his agility and intelligence is underpinned by care and huge scope. Yes, he is young and still learning to channel his power, but given the right education there will be no doubting how he will be written into the history books.

This beautiful Benicio daughter immediately draws the eye. First impressions are systematically confirmed as she reveals her natural rhythm and expressive movement. Then it dawns on you, almost surreal; she’s beyond prototype, she’s authentic. It’s all there in one package – breathtaking stage presence, three elastic paces, feminine and kind but above all, a delight to sit on and ride. Still needing time to develop strength, she is nonetheless always willing and bubbling over with joie de vivre. This special mare will be a pleasure to produce and a privilege to watch.

What did we observe when naming Zapiro? Cheeky, playful and curious; all the hallmarks of his namesake Jonathan Shapiro –a legendary South African political cartoonist renowned for his sharp wit, unflinching satire, and bold visual commentary. Further parallels are his mischievous intelligence and understated mastery of his natural skills. Once mature this kind-eyed “stoutgat” will, like so many of his ilk, reveal a real jumper with a uniquely delightful character. There is no need to read between the lines; this one’s going to be special, but not for sissies.

A direct son of the precious mare Electra, hugely successful up to the big GP 1.60m level with Govett Triggol. Like his mother, he is a big, balanced showjumper who’s huge heart is perfectly complemented by the extraordinarily electric reflexes and scope of his father Callaho’s Sampras. Despite his stature, he is amazingly light on his feet. With one of the biggest engines in the barn, he gives the jumping his all with lightning-quick reflexes and a genuinely kind nature. Given time, trust and a conscientious production, think Outdoor Grand Prix. Think SA Derby. Think BIG.

Finalist as a youngster at the German Eventing Bundeschampionate, she early-on revealed the light-footed blood and athleticism etched into her pedigree by the strong thoroughbred influence of her famed sire Heraldik XX. Like clockwork, this elegant Hanoverian stamps her foals with refinement and expressionalive with character, yet finely attuned to their partners. Now in foal to Victory For Ever, renowned for his generosity, scope and kindness, she offers the promise of a foal predestined to possess faultless rideability with huge “vermögen”.

A self-assured, intelligent lady who quickly settles into a steady work-ethic as soon as her confidence in her rider’s leadership is settled. Once established, Convada reveals a lionhearted personality utterly unafraid of whatever fence she is presented with. A powerhouse, scopey jumper with an exceptionally neat technique, she is also able to cover a lot of ground with consummate ease. Brimming with grit, brio and tenacity, it is exactly these characteristics which will be gamechangers when the jumps get really big and the competition is hot.

A new product from a Callaho broodmare whose record needs neither clamour nor hyperbole. This is Welingan’s magnum opus. Unmistakably in his father’s image, under saddle Vinchero is a finely crafted sports car - smooth in hand, fire at the ready with the lightest touch of the pedal. We are quietly assured that this is one of those rare horses who are not only purpose bred to be superb showjumpers, but who are destined to define an era in their rider’s lives and in our sport’s history books.

Foal at foot by Victory For Ever
Ipanema bears the distinct stamp of her sire, Innovation X, Callaho’s modern refiner, substantially enhancing the overall model of Govett Triggol’s imported 1.30m showjumper, Konema. From her damline she draws the competitive spirit and quick-fire reflexes of granddam sire, Heartbreaker. Now presented and sold with her August born Victory For Ever colt, there is no doubt that this was a nick that has further taken this damline to a whole new level – he is a big, strong colt with a huge canter – crafted for modern sport.

Brave, reactive and quick to the fences, Callaho auction rider, Jenna Odell, described Riviera Blue as giving “an exceptional feeling off the ground… super careful, blood with rideability.” Still developing behind, her jump signals untapped scope for the big questions that lie ahead. In the hands of a patient, skilled rider, she could well be the dark horse of this auction. So, if she catches your eye don’t think twice; granddam Planete des Forets is full sister to International 1.70m jumper & WBFSH top 10 Supersire, VDL Zirocco Blue.

This beautiful chestnut, generous of heart and character, is a full brother to Callaho Corleone, already a 1.40m sensation with Chatan Hendriks. Capone’s pedigree is steeped in proof: five close relatives in South Africa alone have carried riders through the ranks to the 1.50m classes. For now, he reads as a longterm project, but he is well placed to strengthen into the athlete embedded in his pedigree. His true ability will take a little longer to reveal itself, but trust us, the genes don’t lie; bloodlines have a way of keeping their promise.

Mostly it’s planned, sometimes Callaho’s Breeding Magic just happens. Seriously, nobody could have predicted that Con Coriano onto this relatively obscure French dam-line would produce our unicorn broodmare, Con Courcelle. Then, covering her with Callaho’s For Joy, the rare became recherché. Combining an extraordinary jumping style with huge, effortless scope and extreme care, this is a serious jumper. Destined for serious sport. So described by a serious professional. Zdenek Muchna.
Furioso II x Cor de la Bruyeré x Almé x Ramiro. A Callaho Concoction. Happenstance?

Top Gun’s story begins 60 years ago with the birth of greatgreat-grandmother Wencke, whose daughter Rinnetou put Piet Rijmakers on the International scene. Four generations and 60 open showjumpers later, true refinement has found expression. Like a modern jet-fighter pilot, this is a sensitive, deeply intelligent showjumper. With so much power and responsiveness available at the touch of a feather, such an aptly-named being comes with a warning label - this outlier will require the patience and training of a consummate professional to reveal the full measure of his genius.

Light on his feet and naturally balanced, this generous gelding organizes himself with ease and shows a jump that perfectly reflects his sire, Con Coriano’s reflexes, care and prodigious scope. Eezy Peezy to ride and eager to learn, Con Cairo is already a polished and dependable gentleman. It is indeed rare to find a young horse which offers both extremes – unmatched rideability coupled to huge potential as a big time showjumper. Lastly, DO NOT be put off by his current size – he will top out well over 16hh.

A TOP broodmare from a dam who has produced no less than six open jumpers, two successfully to the 1.50m level. Con Zidria herself has served Callaho with distinction, having produced five foals, of which two daughters we have retained to continue this prolific line. Now offered in foal to Callaho’s Larison, celebrated for his colossal scope, sensitivity and sensibility, this offering is a nobrainer. The future belongs to those who are able to see it coming.

At the dawn of a new era at Callaho, a daughter of Callaho Chupalight is now on offer - and what an ambassador to open this chapter! Out of an established dam already proven by her son, current 1.30m SA Champion, Callaho Let’s Fly with Helen Criticos, Honolulu’s genetic heritage predictably blends sharp reflexes, scope and care in equal measure. Just like her father, this finely bred rose will need time and a sensitive hand before the full extent of her abilities unfurl to wake up the world.

Decidedly one of those “sssh…please don’t tell anyone” horses of the auction. Quietly concealed within this still-maturing youngster there awaits a gentleman akin to 007. Descending from top-ofthe-drawer Hanoverian Aristocracy defined by monumental scope, within this agent lies the sensitivity and electricity of the French influence, brought to bear by Quidam de Revel. If you’re the one that likes to come to the party without being noticed, and slip out again with a diamond in your pocket, this one’s for you.

Our Superstar Stallion Chupalight enters the limelight with a BANG! Truly, this remarkable son now stands on the springboard of his career to herald, not only Callaho’s “coming-of-age” milestone, but to underpin our Zuchthof Hollen Studmaster, Gunther Friemel’s absolute conviction that his “Chupie” was destined for stardom as a breeding stallion. In a rare moment of consensus, the entire test team stood unanimous, “Hang Ten is exceptional! In every way this is one for the very Top Sport”, then awarding him a 3***PLUS for his jumping prowess. A Unicorn if there ever was one.

It is very rare, worldwide, that a broodmare with this genealogy appears for sale to breeders. Out of the full-sister to the stallion Arko lll (Nick Skelton), ranked as the World Number One Horse in 2004 and 2005. Sire Flipper d’Elle is equally famous (Laurent Goffinet); European Championships 2005, WEG 2006 as well as multiple Nations Cup and Grand Prix wins in Dublin, Rotterdam and Saint-Lˆo. She breeds them quick, clever, and fiercely competitive. Now add the scope of Victory For Ever. Any more questions? Didn’t think so.

Typical of her Baloubet du Rouet descent, this is a spicy mare with a healthy self-esteem which serves to underpin her bold disposition and confident, explosive take-off. Further blessed with sharp, elastic reactions and a neat technique, she is also able to cover ground when called upon. Even though we unreservedly recommend Rio du Ayenne as a talented showjumper with substantial potential to be reliable, brave and competitive in the higher grades, she will need to be produced by a skilful rider experienced in nurturing young horses with a spirited disposition.

A Lissabon mare of this obvious jumping capacity is seldom available, especially so that she stems directly from the failsafe damline of our supersonic crack, Callaho Conta Fé (Chatan Hendriks). A tall, athletic lady with a straightforward work ethic, in the ring Lady Fé presents herself with huge presence, demonstrating effortless scope (Cardento!) and sharp instincts with an unquestionable will to work. (Lissabon!) This stunning mare is a gentle, sensitive lady who especially thrives under a rider who understands the value of feel over force.
Unquestionably a collector’s piece.

There is something delightfully, mischievously out of the ordinary about Callaho Santino. He is purpose bred and built for dressage, yet he is utterly convinced that jumping is much more fun! He simply floats across the arena in any of his ground-covering paces, only to insist on a quick detour when he spots a fence. Playful when fresh, he soon relaxes to reveal a delightful sequence of elegance, natural expression and fluency. As Nichola Mohr observed; “an athletic, powerful, horse with lots of reach. He has presence; a delight to ride and no shortage of personality”.

By Sampras, out of a superior Westphalian sport-line that all “jump like hell”, this broodmare represents class breeding by any standard. Only 8 years old, she is particularly fertile having already produced three superb offspring for Callaho, including a striking Con Coriano filly. Now presented in foal to Corinth, this combo is a particularly savvy choice for a progressive breeder who is familiar with the tried-and-tested adage “start with a foundation mare, end with a dynasty”.

Maternal sister to Lot 4 (Callaho Ivette), Jupiter adds a whole new facet to her mother Staletta’s lineage. By Jaguar Mail, the 1.60m International jumping stallion made famous by progressive French breeder Bernard Le Courtois of Haras De Brullemail. With 83% thoroughbred blood, he was specifically chosen to introduce length and refinement into this damline without sacrificing jumping ability. Jupiter consequently brings forward intent, grit and competitive instinct to a balanced admixture rounded off with Larison’s huge scope and sensibility.

Every Callaho Auction has its sweetheart, and this year by unanimous consensus, it’s Conta Calypso. A truly sweet mare, she carries our treasured Calypso ll genes in full abundance. By Con Coriano, it consequently surprises no one that this a flawless diamond: a rideable, straightforward gem who simply loves her job! Hold on, we’re not finished yet...
She also happens to be a multi-talented athlete with a particularly special jumping talent. Without a doubt, she is going to make a bee-line straight to the big-time Grand Prix courses.

This is a flashy young man who wears his heart on his sleeve. Tall, elegant and marked with presence, he reveals floating paces with a particularly powerful canter. Electric in his reflexes and quick off the leg, he is nonetheless a comfortable, rewarding partner who quickly relaxes once he gets the hang of his rider. Win his trust and the tension quickly dissolves to reveal relaxed “schwung” and expression. Patient and skilled production to maturity will unlock his true rideability and “will to excel” - the most essential qualities to complement the elastic paces of a serious dressage contender.

To end our 21st Auction on a high note, we’ve reserved the exceptional Avicci to take the final bow of this year’s Callaho offering. His sire, Alligator Fontaine, who stamped the International arena with Éric Navet, was carefully selected to inject refinement, care and elasticity into our Calando/Capitol damline, famed for its colossal scope. It is thus no coincidence that Callaho Avicci is described as a “clever, catlike jumping acrobat with the world at his feet”
The show ain’t over ‘till the Fat Lady Sings.
