Crystal Beet Seed produces seed in the Pacific Northwest with the basic seed planting in August and the hybrid seed harvested the following August. Seed is transported to Moorhead, Minn., to Crystal’s seed processing facility. Seed is sent to Germains Seed Technology for XBEET priming and pelleting, along with additional fungicides and insecticides. The seed is then packaged at the seed processing facility and shipped to sales agents for delivery to American Crystal Sugar Company growers for planting. AMERICAN SUGARBEET GROWERS ASSOCIATION By Luther Markwart, Executive Vice President

A Fond Farewell To My Friends And Colleagues Closing out 47 years of a full range of experiences With the November elections upon us, much of the work important for agriculture will be delayed until after the elections. The lame duck session will be chaotic, which may actually work to our advantage. There will be a desire by this Congress to complete as much as they can before a new Congress begins. Sugar industry leaders have worked intensely over the past year on the Farm Bill, tier two import problems, fake molasses imports, economic and disaster assistance, pesticides and crop insurance. A full report will be provided once the Congress is complete. What is key this month is to get the drought-impacted crop harvested and processed in the months ahead. On September 8 I officially turned over the role of CEO to Zack Clark, who will be the author of these articles going forward. He is an excellent and very capable replacement, and I will support him through the end of the year when I officially retire.

You have been a tremendous blessing to my life. Best wishes for unity and prosperity to all of you in the years ahead. I have had some time to reflect on my 47-year career in the beet sugar industry. It has been a tremendous honor to serve the fabulous farm families who are engaged in this industry. I designed the structure of our organization to balance the interests and geography of our diverse growing areas. It creates harmony and unity among competitors in order to advocate for sound public policy that affects you. It has worked tremendously. It has been a thrill to teach and train grower leaders to be dynamic and effective advocates for our 24 SUGAR PRODUCER | OCTOBER 2026

industry in the halls of Congress, the administration, and the greater agriculture community. They have had a great impact over the years, and I am immensely proud of their accomplishments. We’ve always faced a wide variety of challenges as we’ve sought to ensure industry success. To play a critical role in nine Farm Bills, creating unique provisions that provide stronger markets, bring biotechnology to this industry, work on a variety of trade agreements and trade problems, improve crop insurance products, fight a variety of legal battles, defend and promote pesticides, and serve as a spokesperson for the industry, are just a few of the key achievements over that time. To be a great leader you must first be a great servant. As the shepherd of the flock, it has been my responsibility on federal policies to protect you from harm and lead you to greener pastures. There is a long list of successes over the years. There have been issues well beyond my control that have seen growers and facilities exit the business. Each of those were very hard to accept, akin to losing part of your family. The demands and responsibilities of this position are substantial as you must stay on top of a variety of issues in a world that changes rapidly and responses are immediate. I want to thank my incredible wife and children for their patience through my inattention and absence due to work. A huge thank you to all of those who have served on our board of directors, to my staff, and to my Washington beet and cane colleagues who are essential to our success. No one does this work alone. Finally, and most importantly, a huge thank you to every grower who makes this industry possible. Your dedication to support our organization and staff has been simply phenomenal. I look forward to seeing many of you at your annual meetings this fall to give my thanks to you in person. You have been a tremendous blessing to my life. Best wishes for unity and prosperity to all of you in the years ahead.

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT

Luther Markwart

(ED—As you undoubtedly know by now Luther Markwart is retiring as executive vice president and CEO of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association. We ran a feature on Markwart in the last issue of the magazine [“Markwart To Conclude Remarkable Run With ASGA,” Sugar Producer Magazine, August/September 2026, page 12] but didn’t have room to run this sidebar with it. We present it to you now.) We reached out to a handful of folks and asked them to share some thoughts about Luther Markwart.

Galen Lee, Idaho grower who is also a member of the ASGA Board of Directors. “Any time I was with Luther at a non sugarbeet event, whether it was general agriculture, political or anything else, there was always someone wanting to visit with him about collaboration, political strategy, process, progress or a myriad of other topics. “He has a wealth of knowledge about DC, politics, general ag and life in general. He values friendships on a level that we should all aspire to.”

Nate Hultgren, Minnesota grower and past president of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association. “Ever the consummate professional, Luther has the rare ability to effectively relate to both Washington, DC, policymakers and U.S. beet farmers. He knows how to speak the language, performs ethically, and has dedicated his life to improving the well-being of sugarbeet farms across the country. He has set the standard for agricultural political action, leading the top grower fly-in effort each spring. “Not only has Luther performed at a high level across his career, but he has also trained and elevated grower board members of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association to effectively tell their story both locally and nationally. As a former president of ASGA, I am so grateful for all the time and institutional knowledge Luther shared with me to make me a better grower-leader and voice for our industry. It’s one thing to excel in your position; it’s another thing to make those around you excel as well.”

U.S. Rep. Glenn GT Thompson, chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives House Committee On Agriculture. Rep. Thompson said he’s known Markwart for about a decade. “When I first heard he was retiring, I was happy for him but I thought he needed Congressional approval to leave. “He puts a personal face on the American farmer and does it in a way that promotes professionalism and efficiency. “I appreciate him being there at the table for the Farm Bill. He brings the production and utilization side to the process. “It takes people like Luther being at the table and involved in the process for us to get it done. “I’m going to miss him but wish him the best.”

Neil Rockstad, Minnesota grower and immediate past president of ASGA “Luther has been an anchor for the United States sugarbeet grower for over four decades. Nearly a household name among growers, Luther’s steady hand has guided the industry’s success through multiple ups and downs, threats, perils, transitions, mergers, and the one constant … change. “Sugarbeet growers have placed their full trust in Luther, a trust he has earned time and time again. One would be hard pressed to find someone so well respected in Washington, DC, a person who values character and kindness and honesty above all. There could not be a better spokesperson to represent farm families. He has served to see second, and even third generations of sugarbeet growers continue farm legacies and traditions, building on the successes of his dedicated work. Sugarbeet growers in the United States can easily credit Luther Markwart for keeping their farms viable and building a legacy in production agriculture. Some words to describe Luther include: thoughtful; diligent; thorough; dedicated; trustworthy; honest; committed; a true leader; steady handed; kind and empathetic, yet firm. “He has a remarkable gift of listening to clashing opinions, yet calmly guiding opposing views to a united front to advance the industry and benefit the growers. He is sometimes a referee, sometimes a peacemaker, and always a teacher. He values relationships, and has developed those relationships with growers, fellow sugar reps, legislators, department heads, and the list goes on. He has been described by those whom he oversees as being the ‘best boss they have ever had.’ “Luther asks the questions nobody thinks to ask. Luther analyzes each and every decision, weighing all of the ‘what ifs,’ always considering the unknowns, and with calculated wisdom, advancing the best option to shape policy in DC. “Luther’s focus is on grower success. He does not seek credit, nor does he have a hint of ego that clouds his judgment. Luther’s reward of pride and success comes only when growers do well. He is a very hard worker, dedicating endless hours and after-hours and weekend hours and holiday hours … to the grower. National Real Sugar Day: Celebrating Real Sugar This October 15 Telling sugar’s story to the world Real sugar is rooted in nature and at the heart of real recipes, bringing sweetness from scratch. National Real Sugar Day unites our industry each October 15 to share our story and help consumers connect with the real sugar they know and love, made only from sugarcane and sugarbeets. FOUR YEARS OF CELEBRATING REAL SUGAR

Founded in 2022 by the Sugar Association and its members, National Real Sugar Day honors our crop, processing and farm families. It celebrates the people who make it possible and invites everyone to learn and experience something new with sugar in the foods they make and enjoy. Each year, National Real Sugar Day has centered on a theme designed to build deeper connections between consumers and real sugar. The inaugural year in 2022 built industry awareness and reinforced the simple message that real sugar comes from sugarbeets and sugarcane. In 2023, the Real People. Real Plants. Real Sugar. theme celebrated just that: the people and plants behind the crop while expanding awareness of the day among industry, agriculture and community partners. The following year, Real Sugar: There’s Nothing Like It highlighted sugar’s unique qualities that make it 26 SUGAR PRODUCER | OCTOBER 2026

irreplaceable, and invited sugar users to share their own experiences. In 2025, Real Sugar. Deep Roots. showcased real sugar as deeply rooted in nature, family farms, local communities and family-favorite foods.

2026: REAL SUGAR. REAL FOOD.

This year’s theme, Real Sugar. Real Food., brings the focus into the kitchen, connecting where sugar comes from with the scratch-cooking happening in homes and community bakeries and kitchens. It is a celebration of the people, recipes and foods that bring us together. At the heart of the campaign is a friendly reminder that real sugar is made by plants, not in a lab. The goal is to build greater awareness and consumer confidence in sugar’s place in real foods, everyday meals, and family recipes. Real sugar is in your pantry and it’s often used to make foods from scratch. Consumers are increasingly interested in simple, real ingredients over artificial or lab-made alternatives, and research reflects a preference for real sugar over sweeteners. Sugar Association polling conducted in April 2026 found that 82 percent of Americans prefer real sugar over artificial sweeteners. National Real Sugar Day also provides an opportunity to help consumers better understand sugar’s role in the foods they enjoy. The day shares facts about sugar in our diets, including its long history as a trusted ingredient that has been safely consumed for more than 1,000 years.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE REAL SUGAR SEAL

The National Real Sugar Day logo features the Real Sugar seal. Originally developed in 2020 by the Sugar Association as an easily identifiable way to differentiate real sugar from other sweeteners, the seal is now a registered trademark on sugar packaging. AMERICAN SUGAR ALLIANCE By Rob Johansson, Director of Economics & Policy Analysis

Sugar Producers Thankful For Bipartisan Support Amid Immense Challenges Sugar groups looking for help to rein in unfair foreign trade practices October is a season of change as leaves turn, the relaxed pace of summer fully transitions into the everyday rhythm of school and work routines, and of course it is time to harvest sugarbeet and sugarcane crops. This year, harvest for many beet or cane farmers will be bittersweet.

“It’s an exciting time on the farm, but filled with a lot of anxiety,” sugarcane farmer Patrick Frischhertz told RFD-TV during the 41st annual International Sweetener Symposium, hosted by the American Sugar Alliance. Sugarbeet and sugarcane farmers, industry leaders and policymakers gathered in Colorado at the symposium in August to discuss a range of issues and challenges facing America’s sugar producers. The economic and trade challenges facing sugarbeet and sugarcane farmers, including unfair foreign trade practices, were prominent topics throughout the meeting. “There is a growing disparity between U.S. foreign trade policy and sugar policy, driving domestic sugar prices below costs of production,” said Chris Bergin, trader at CSC Sugar, in his remarks at the symposium. “This urgently needs to be addressed and corrected to create stability for our domestic market and ensure that U.S. sugar producers are supported while experiencing increased production costs.” We need to strengthen our foreign trade policies to level the playing field for an essential agriculture commodity. American sugarbeet and sugarcane farmers and workers want to continue keeping it sweet in America, but we need an updated over-quota sugar tariff to better reflect the market volatility and inflationary pressures facing farmers today. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Secretary Stephen A. Vaden reaffirmed the Trump Administration’s

commitment to American sugar producers and his support for our trade efforts in his comments at the symposium, saying, “We put American farmers first, and we’re not going to allow unfair foreign competition to take our own markets away from us.” Thankfully, support for strong farm and trade policies continues to be bipartisan. This May, 112 members of Congress sent a joint letter to the U.S. Trade Representative, advocating for a Section 301 investigation and updated tariff-rate quotas to help protect America’s sugar producers. One of those members, Rep. Shontel Brown (D-OH-11), addressed the symposium, highlighting the national impact of U.S. sugar policy.

“We should be pursuing trade policies that level the playing field against bad actors abroad while giving American producers stability and predictability,” Rep. Brown said. Also at the top of everyone’s mind during the symposium were the sugarbeet and sugarcane crops and how they were faring this year. Many growers and industry stakeholders were talking about uncertain production prospects for the fall. The planting conditions for many sugarbeet regions were subpar this spring, and we saw a large number of acres that were unable to be planted. The level of prevent plant acres noted by sugarbeet farmers this spring was the largest going back 15 years. Also, in sugarcane country, a new pest, the pasture mealy bug, is causing real concern among farmers with patches of sugarcane fields browning from the infestation. In both cases, the ultimate impact on the size of the crops remains unknown. In addition to uncertainty around trade and production this year, we are also experiencing some change at the American Sugar Alliance, as Luther Markwart stepped down as executive vice president and CEO of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association (ASGA) in September. Luther has been a tireless and fearless advocate for our industry, setting a high bar when it comes to getting work done in DC. “When you live on a farm, you’ve got to know how things work, and when they don’t work, you have got to figure out how to fix it,” Luther said. “You’ve got to be passionate about your work, and you’ve got to have compassion for people.” We all know firsthand that Luther has been passionate and successful in representing sugarbeet farmers for the past 47 years. While Luther will be missed, sugarbeet growers are well positioned to navigate this season with Zack Clark now at the helm of ASGA. Zack’s been a tireless advocate for sugarbeet farmers as vice president at ASGA for the past seven years. His clear understanding of ASGA’s mission, and the farmers who drive that mission, put him in a unique position to help our industry navigate this turbulent time. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Zack, and all of the members of the American Sugar Alliance, in service to the industry. Together, our industry will continue working to defend American farmers, American workers and American sugar production. 30 SUGAR PRODUCER | OCTOBER 2026
