years. But Rivard has decided that 2021 was his last year and recently announced his retirement.

At the Howe City Council meeting on Tuesday, current Howe Fire Chief Robert Maniet honored Rivard with the 2021 Firefighter of the Year honor as well as a special honor for his contributions over the years. The honor brought a standing ovation from Mayor Bill French, council members, and the audience members.

“When I moved in, Jerry Park came to the house when I was moving furniture and asked me to join the fire department,” said Rivard who said he stayed on the department because he wanted to help his community.

Rivard says the biggest change in the department since he began is the improvement of equipment and trucks.

“Back then, there were a lot more fields. Now they all have houses on them,” said Rivard.

Rivard has been a mentor to several generations of fire fighters in Howe and many say that his retirement from the department is a huge loss of knowledge.

“He knows every piece of equipment inside and out at the station, and he (Continued on page 9)
