It's Spelling Bee season, and the spellers were very busy at Howe Intermediate and Middle Schools this week. On Thursday at Howe Intermediate School, there were 23 spellers at the start of the bee. But after seven rounds, the speller on top was fourth grader Jude Christman. Christman and the second-place winner, William Felder, a fifth grader, battled it out for three rounds, with Christman correctly spelling the word "corridor."
The Howe Middle School Spelling Bee was held Friday resulting in Logan Nitchman, a seventh grader, beating out 16 other spellers. His winning word was "Wales." Second place was determined by a 5-round spell-off between Levi Madden, sixth grade, and Taryn Ray, seventh grade. Ray earned the alternate spot by spelling "morbidity."
Christman, representing Howe Intermediate School, and Nitchman, representing Howe Middle School, will both compete at the Grayson County Spelling Bee to be held on February 8. The winner of the North Texas area county spelling bees will compete in March at the Dallas Regional Bee. The two top winners in Dallas will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May.
