defense was much improved by only allowing Commerce 314 total yards of offense which is the least amount allowed during the current 19-game losing streak. Howe is allowing 476.57 yards per game which ranks last among all 78 Howe Bulldogs teams in history.

The Bulldogs racked up 365 total yards of offense including 90 on the ground and 275 through the air. Quarterback Austin Haley, a 3-year starter, became Howe’s alltime passing leader during the fourth quarter as he surpassed Chase Fountain’s total of 3,749. Haley started the game completing his first 10 passes and finished 22-of-39 for 275 yards and a touchdown. That gives him a career total of 3,854 yards. His passing touchdown moved him up in that category also where he needs five to surpass Fountain and nine to move ahead of Jay Skipworth to become the all-time leader in that category.

It was Howe’s defense that made the eyebrow raise Friday night as they held Commerce to a punt on their opening possession and only allowed an Emanuel Castillo 28yard field goal until the fourth quarter.

Howe’s first drive was a good representation of what was to come all night. Howe drove 10 plays into Commerce territory, but two untimely sacks and a penalty forced a punt which set up Commerce’s scoring drive of 7plays, 50-yards and opened the scoring with the Castillo field goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Howe’s second possession totaled 12 plays and spanned 49 yards and killed 5:47 of the clock but resulted in a turnover on downs at the Commerce 21 yard line when Bryce Crosby carried for no gain on third down and Howe had a false start on 4th-and-1. A Haley to Lopez pass was a half yard shy of the first down and Commerce took over for their third possession.

The drive only lasted three plays due to Howe senior cornerback Wesley Ingle intercepting a Darren Beal pass to give Howe the ball at their own 45 yard line. Three plays later, Haley used his legs instead of his arm to put Howe on the scoreboard with a 16 -yard touchdown run to the front corner of the south endzone. After the Daniel Del Angel PAT, the Dogs took a 7-3 lead with 7:13 remaining in the second quarter.

Commerce’s next possession also ended in an interception as Haley stepped in front of a pass to give Howe the ball at their own 15 yard line. But the Dogs drive (Continued on page 7)
