HISD Employee Spotlight: Kim Duncan

On the night before school was let out for the summer, Howe ISD first grade teacher Kim Duncan was in a major car accident. Luckily, she did not experience internal injuries but did suffer two broken ankles and a broken arm. She spent seven days in the hospital and at a rehab facility for six days.

“It was a long summer with recuperating, but I had a good support system with my family, my church family, and my school family,” said Duncan. “Friends took care of me and also took care of kids and my husband. Everyone got fed and everyone got to where they needed to go.” With a clear doctor’s report, she says she’s pretty much back to normal with walking and getting around.

Mrs. Duncan has been at Howe ISD for 18 years now and is the only district she’s taught. Combined, this is her 12th year to teach first grade. She spent six years of intervention for kindergarten through fifth grade.

She grew up in Bells, Texas where she attended school there from fourth grade through graduation. Howe ISD Superintendent Kevin Wilson was her junior high principal.

“I feel like he’s still the same. He was very supportive of students back then and I feel like he is still that way today,” said Duncan. “He’s the same type of guy now that he was back then.”

from her teachers and coaches. Current Bells Superintendent Trisha Meek is still sought for advice as she was her mentor at Bells ISD.

She moved from the old elementary school campus to the new Summit Hill campus and says there’s lots of room, but they’re filling it up.

Duncan says that she loves Howe ISD because of the students.

“Whether I had them last year or 17 years ago, I still love seeing them and love hearing their stories,” said Duncan. “Being a small district, we haven’t grown so big where we forget those students, or they forget their teachers.” Former Howe students check-in at the All-School Reunion in 2015.
