Question: When did you start with the band program?

Answer: In fifth grade, I tried out to be a flute (player) and we started the second semester of the year. I’ve been in band since then.

Question: Your band director tells me about your first day of band camp as a freshman. There might have been some nerves? Were there tears involved?

Answer: Yes, there were a lot of tears involved, actually. That morning, I woke up and my grandpa was supposed to pick me up and I called my mom and started crying and said I didn’t want to come. It was too stressful. I was scared about high school at the start and my papaw actually had to pick me up, put me in the truck. When we got to the school, Mrs. Liss and the drum major at the time Kindle Catching had to basically, not pull me out of the truck, but talk me out of getting out of the truck. I actually had a great time.

Question: You have some family members that have been employed by Howe ISD… Answer: Yes, my Grandma Laura Moore was a janitor for the middle school until I was in third grade. And Mrs. Liss just told me that one of the first band directors, Mrs. Rulla—I’m related to her by marriage.

Question: You had a solo in last year’s show and a solo this year. What’s that feeling like during the show? Answer: It’s kind of crazy because I’m a very quiet person. So, it’s something that really pushed me to be confident in myself and out of my comfort zone. Just being in the show is a crazy feeling to know that everyone is watching me and to be able to have the opportunity to have my own solo.

Question: So, you’re on the Leadership Team for the Pride of Howe. What are your responsibilities?

Some of my responsibilities are to just make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to do. We have certain cleaning duties with our squads. Also, just to make sure that everyone has a great time and has a positive attitude.

What’s the outlook for this season? Obviously, the main thing we’re all working for is to make it all the way to the end to the place that we don’t talk about.
