The Howe Bulldogs closed out 2021 with a 10-16 record on Tuesday night including 5-9 in district play. They finished with a 3-game winning streak including a statement night perhaps with a double-header sweep of Whitewright at home for the season finale. The Dogs won the first game 12-2 in a run-rule and finished out a 7-4 win in the season bookend. Howe, with a lineup card dotted with loads of sophomores, found themselves suffering growing pains in the early parts of district play by starting 06. However, they finished strong and flashed what Bulldogs fans expect to see in the over the next two years by going 5-3 to finish the season.

In game one, Howe had a huge game from leadoff hitter sophomore Ryan Hough who went 3for-4 at the plate including a triple with three runs scored. Howe also had multi-hit games from sophomore Austin Haley and junior twins Luke and Ethan Lopez. Luke Lopez homered to left that scored Hough and ended the game in a run-rule.

Haley started the game and went three quality innings allowing only one earned run while striking out three and walking none. He allowed three hits. Fellow sophomore Matt Hayes relieved him in the fourth inning and pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit or a walk.

Howe’s first runs of the game came when senior Dylan Hughs singled home Hough senior Brett Burnett scored on a grounder by Luke Lopez. The Dogs offense kept pouring it on and finished with 10 hits in the game.

In game two, Parker Pecina led Howe with three hits including a double. Hough, Haley, and Luke Lopez again had multi-hit games.

Burnett pitched 4.2 innings allowing no earned runs and no hits while walking one. Luke Lopez finished the game with 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits while walking three. Howe scored in the bottom of the first when Haley grounded to third scoring Hough. Pecina doubled home Hughs moments later. In the second inning, Hough singled home senior Austin Thurman who reached on an error. Luke Lopez doubled home Hughs in the bottom of the third. Lopez later scored off of an error to make it 6-0 Howe after three innings.

All seniors played in the season finale with Hughs, Burnett, Braeden Wise, Thurman, and Jordan Jones all seeing action in their final game.

Howe has outstanding talent returning next season with the Lopez brothers, Parker Pecina, Kaleb McNutt, Luke Catching, and Caleb Searcy anchoring what will be senior class. The juniors next year will be anchored by Hough, Haley, Carson Daniels, and Matt Hayes.

Bulldogs losing skipper

Ryan Moreau turned in his resignation as the head baseball coach of the Howe Bulldogs and informed his players on Wednesday. Moreau, who will be taking an assistant baseball coaching position at Sherman, spent three years as the leader of the Bulldogs. The Dogs were 1648 during that time including a 621 district record. COVID did not help the young popular coach as Howe was only able to play one district game a year ago as he was beginning to build the foundation of the program. Moreau came to Howe from Class 2A Meridian. There were teary eyes among his players on Wednesday when the announcement was made.

Madie Rohre of the Lady Tigers struck out nine Lady Bulldogs in her four innings in the circle. Hayden Thompson pitched a scoreless fifth with two strikeouts also.

Howe had three hits, all singles, and a walk during the final game with Alexia Womack going 2-for3 and Micaiah Franklin picking a hit.

Micaiah Franklin pitched all 5.1 innings, allowing 10 earned runs on 13 hits.

The Lady Bulldogs went 2-11 in district play with both wins coming against Leonard. The dramatic come-from-behind win at home on senior night was the highlight of the season.
