Howe Librarian Terry McLaughlin Retiring After 26 Years
When patrons walk through the door of Howe Community Library on any given weekday afternoon, they are greeted with the warm smile of Terry McLaughlin McLaughlin, a devoted library employee for 26 years, is retiring May 31
McLaughlin’s career with libraries started at the Guthrie Public Library in Guthrie, Oklahoma, where she worked for 2 ½ years before she married Ernie McLaughlin in June 1975 They moved to Texas in 1982 In 1993 Howe Community Library needed a temporary worker while library employee, Lisa King, went on maternity leave Since she had enjoyed working in the library in Guthrie, it seemed logical for her to fill that spot, intending to work for only a few weeks However, King decided to not come back, so it turned into a long-term job Very long-term as it turned out
When McLaughlin began working at HCL in 1993, the library was in what is now the Howe Elementary School computer lab The high school was where the current middle school is, and her children attended Howe Middle School, which is now the administration building
Even with the changes in location of the library and the schools as the town has grown, McLaughlin says the biggest changes in the library have been the addition of computers and the types of books that people check out, especially in the children and young adult sections “Graphic novels are big now, and there are lots more science fiction books than there used to be ”
Over her 26 years, McLaughlin has seen the library through four directors, beginning with Peggy
Bradley, then Roland Commons, Becky Hogenson, and now Melissa Atchison
She recalls a couple of funny things that have happened over the years One was several years ago after school, the phone rang McLaughlin picked up the scanner and answered the scanner as if it was the phone To make matters worse, there was a student there at the time and, “of course, he saw me do it!” she said with a laugh
Another time, in the current location, again after school, a patron walked in the front door and a rat darted in the door with her One of the students saw it and sounded the alert The hunt was on and, with the help of a broom, two of the students were able to “herd” the rat back outside And some people think libraries are quiet and boring
Another time when doing the final check of the building at closing time, McLaughlin found a child sound asleep in the story time area She said the most rewarding part of her job is meeting the people who come to the library She enjoys seeing old friends and making new ones She’s very tuned to what individuals like to read, often setting aside books for certain patrons because she knows their taste in books.
As part of enjoying retirement, McLaughlin plans to travel with her husband Ernie They are making plans to see the fall foliage on the east coast this autumn
Whatever she does, we know that she will be missed at the library; it just won’t be the same without her McLaughlin’s Retirement Party will be held Tuesday, May 21, from 4 to 5:30 at Howe Community Library The public is welcome

With a new elementary school coming, Simmons says that he's wondered about how that would affect the physical education program In his first years of being the PE coach, Howe had kindergarten through fifth grade in the elementary school When the fifth graders moved to the middle school on Tutt Street, he would go back and forth between schools, however, the mindset stayed the same, the track meet stayed the same, and the chants stayed the same
"This was a great move for Howe and when they divide, I hope that everyone benefits from the additional space - the teachers and the students," said Simmons "Even if I were in that situation and moving between campuses, I would imagine it would be the same as before with the same mindset, the same chants But without knowing, it could become more independent I don't know if they'll have two coaches It could kind of progress into really two different campuses with two different identities "
Even with that thought, Simmons insisted that no matter the name of the school, they are all Bulldogs They are all Howe Bulldogs
The Firecrackers have no idea that they just barely missed the biggest Firecracker of all time
