School board
rigorous, high-quality education regardless of their background
Technology is a need that is continuous It is constantly changing and we must offer ageappropriate technology to our students Staff must also stay current on the latest in technology to relate to students as well as to be able to teach what is relevant to life after graduation

Hayes - I actually already stated the above question, but I'll state it again 1 Continued vision for growth of our districts needs such as classroom space 2 continued pay increases for our teachers and support staff We want to be the best in every area within the Howe school district This includes great teachers not leaving our district for better pay I've volunteered at the schools and see the hard work these teachers do They deserve nothing but the best
Leakey - 1 Continuity of coaching and administration at the high school level is an issue currently We have lost our principal after only three years on the job The AD/Head Football Coach is entering the last year of a two-year contract and hasn’t been offered an extension We have been awarded five of seven distinctions, district and area championships, school records, and plenty of other successes as outlined above These achievements are enough to give the administrators and their processes a little more time to
Continued from page 5 realize their full potential 2 Our area is in a state of growth We must have plans to accommodate that growth while minimizing the risk of overbuilding or taking on too much debt Our children and grandchildren will have to pay for the decisions we make today both educationally and financially Most bonds for capital projects take 40 years to pay off 3 More seamless and open communication with the public would be beneficial Many of us saw an uproar over the naming of the new elementary school on social media No matter where you stand on that, a good deal of it could have been avoided if people knew that the name would be decided at the meeting that night I would like to see the board of trustees communicate similarly to our school with email, text, and/or social media The public doesn’t know what is on the agenda until after the meeting has happened, so the board can’t adequately represent the interests of a populous that hasn’t voiced their opinions
Brockelman - As Howe residents have no doubt seen, cities and towns all around us are growing fast And that growth will only accelerate as growth from the DFW area heads north Growth is inevitable
So the priorities for our district are twofold First, our school board must plan for and prepare for the long term growth of our schools Second, being that school funding relies heavily on local property tax dollars, our district must rely on our city council members to make sound decisions regarding responsible, sustainable growth of our community
Success in this area will increase funding to the district, allowing for increased pay for teachers and administrative employees, and will also provide for the necessary buildings, supplies, and technologies that will keep our district competitive
Question: What are your best hopes for the future of this school district? How would your aspirations help our students?
Shadden - Continuing to have highly qualified staff and administrators
Meeting the needs of students different learning styles
Doty - I hope to ensure that all our students are academically, emotionally, and socially successful I want to ensure every student is prepared for college or a career upon graduation, every employee knows their value to us and is appreciated, and finally every citizen that pays taxes will know they got the best return on investment
Hayes - I want to see the district grow and have the resources to continue to grow as needed I want to continue to educate myself about the district, state and national school needs so I will be ahead of the game in know what needs to be done at the appropriate time.
Leakey - I hope that our district can continue to serve and educate our kids while being fiscally conservative As we continue to grow, I would like to see more college credit classes (AP, dual credit) offered at the high school Our district would be well served to listen to the interests of our students in offering extracurricular activities Other districts offer outdoors classes, fishing teams, JROTC, and many others Our students and our area could also benefit from offering more vocational programs that may jump-start our students into careers.
Brockelman - Same answer as previous question
Question: If elected, what would you hope would be key accomplishments of the board during your years of service?
Shadden - Being one, of a 7-member School Board, I will be a team member, staying focused on educational data-driven decisions, that are in the best interests of our students and district
Doty - To achieve success with students, we need to expand programs and services to promote parent and community satisfaction
I’d like to be part of a Board that finds ways to evaluate and monitor student, parent, and community satisfaction
We need to ensure that we have an aligned, comprehensive, and rigorous curriculum that works for all students Knowing that many page 12
Dickey
and realizing things weren't too promising, Dickey took a position as a counselor out of the Grayson County Superintendent's office He spent two days in Howe, two days in Whitewright, and a day in Gunter each week He says that the transition was a big one
"I was in charge of testing with ACT and SAT It was different, but if you've ever coached, you miss it," said Dickey
Howe replaced Dickey with Blackie Wade, who never had a winning record in Howe, but is credited for being the one who introduced the victory light to Bulldog Stadium
In football, Dickey taught his players to fill the gaps and that is exactly what he, himself did in his 31 years at Howe While staying in the counselor role for many of those years, he was also an interim principal, an interim athletic director on four separate occasions and even served as interim superintendent in 1991 between the tenure of Pete Simmons and Dr Wayne King
"Dr King asked me if I would come to Howe full-time as assistant superintendent," said Dickey "That's what I did the last eight years I was at Howe. But there for a while, I was in charge of everything I had custodians, textbooks, bus drivers, bus routes, and evaluations of teachers It was plenty busy."
Dickey said that the six months that he was interim superintendent was a period that he couldn't wait to be over.
He says the athletic director position is about the same now as it was then

Dickey has seen almost ever Howe varsity football game every player for the past 50 When asked what player wo pick first if he had to start a man roster of all of the How he's ever seen, his answer w fullback Rick Orr followed c by his quarterback Rick Han and Lenny Gray
He talked of the best times t Bulldogs have seen from his team to the Buck Smith era early 1980's all the way thro Jim Fryar and Joey McQueen eras of the '80s and early '90s and of course Cory Crane's 9-2 season in 2010
Dickey, over the years, has worked approximately 450-500 track meets in various towns by firing the starting gun He's also worked as a statistician on Friday nights on the sidelines for Fryar and McQueen from 1985-1992 After that, he ran the clock for twenty years working with his friend Leon Thornhill, who would serve as public address announcer
In the first game of the new press box at Bulldog Stadium, Superintendent Kevin Wilson has asked Dickey and Thornhill to once again serve as clock operator and public address announcer to give a ribbon-cutting type of feel to the new facility.
It may have been 50 years ago this fall that Norman Dickey first came to Howe to coach, but he can still be seen in the halls as a substitute teacher
"I'm so thankful to the people of Howe They've treated me so well over the years and I've been blessed to be able to be in Howe this long and to have worked for Howe for 31 years," said Dickey
His 51 wins are still a school record for a head coach Dickey, now, at the age of 74, recently had a man ask him how he's able to still look so young His answer was to always wear the same coaching shorts
