ut your antiques and with Georgia Caraway

I have a small collection of postcards that have items attached to them I always marvel that they made it through the postal system intact

Perhaps that reflects the time when mail was handled by n the g of sides

The salt bag sewed onto the back side of the postcard reads Salt from Great Salt Lake Utah ”

The monument was erected on the Temple Grounds in commemoration of the miraculous delivery of the Mormon Pioneers from starvation when a plague of crickets threatened the destruction of their crops in 1848 and 1849 Flocks of sea gulls appeared and preyed upon the destroyers until the pests vanished and the people were saved Since then the gulls have been protected in Utah by Legislative Enactment

The card is dated August 28, 1959 The postage attached is interesting The stamp reads “Held for Postage ” There are two stamps: a 1 cent and a 2cent equaling 3 cents total And then an addition message: “This is the mail for which you sent postage ”

The other postcard I own that is similar to this one is also from Utah

Utah State Capitol Cherry Blossom Time, Salt Lake City

Salt bag attached 1953

A salt bag is sewn onto the back side of this postcard and it reads the same “Salt from Great Salt Lake Utah ”

The park surrounding the State Capitol Building is beautifully landscaped and contains countless varieties of trees, shrubs, and flowers Cherry Blossom Time occurs each spring

The appropriate postage was attached which was a Thomas Jefferson 3 cent stamp This one is postmarked July 25, 1953

All sorts of things have been attached to postcards before they were mailed: cushions with perfume or sachet enclosed, parts that move to create a mechanical type picture, mirrors, raised metal turkeys, calendars, feathered hats, simulated hair, plastic glasses, fold out poems, foldout photographs, letter openers, flags, embroidery, Christmas trees, hearts, bubble eyes, feathers, ribbons, and other decorative notions

This is a fun, but difficult to collect, genre of postcards Over 40 years of collecting postcards have only brought 5 into my possession But I am always on the lookout
