Lands came to Howe from Bonham in 2001 with Larry McFarlin when he became the Howe athletic director. Since coming to Howe he's had multiple 20-win seasons and deep playoff runs He doesn't keep count of wins or 20-win seasons and will probably take his 400th as an important one down the road, but the short-term view will most likely be one of which is a big district win in the near future

Lands is a cancer survivor who had an extreme battle in the fall of 2016. After feeling fatigued during that summer, Lands checked with a physician which resulted in a test result of extremely low iron After radiation treatments, Lands has recovered from the scare of 2016

Santa Claus is coming to town. And he is coming in the form of collectibles to Howe Mercantile. Santa is the most popular of the Yuletide collecting categories. Price and that popular Santa German. his

Nast as a jolly and rotund old man. This image was further reinforced when Haddon Sundblom created his first Santa painting for Coca-Cola in 1931. During the next 30 years Sundblom’s images influenced the look of all Santa collectibles.
During the 1950s Americans began to favor plastic Christmas decorations over those made of other materials. The nation was experiencing a relaxed less formal lifestyle. China and glass were also considered too breakable, and therefore, too dangerous to have around small children. Plastic was new and fun following the meager holiday decorations used during World War II. Glow-in-the- hands drawn up under billowing sleeves of his heavy robes as if to protect him from the harsh winter weather. Instead of a sack full of toys for good children, early Santas are more apt to carry a shepherd’s crook, representing an attempt to rescue those who have gone astray or a basket of switches. His straggly beard was made of rabbit fur or cotton batting. Better examples include hand painted papier-mache or plasterof-Paris with a lifelike facial expression that reflected the grim image of Santa at the time.
Between 1930 and 1940 large numbers of Santa images were also being produced in Japan and the United States. Highly detailed celluloid Santas from that era are the most expensive plastic collectibles today. Because celluloid is thin, brittle, and highly flammable, a replacement was inevitable. Storage of these items should always be in a cool place away from any source of heat. In the mid-1940s a tougher, safer type of plastic was used to produce millions of hard, shiny Santas.
During the 1930s and 1940s, Santa gradually became jolly and robust, thanks largely to his portrayal by cartoonist Thomas dark icicles dripped from Christmas trees, while Santa and his sleigh accented the mantel in millions of American homes during the 1950s. The quality of plastic became thinner during the 1960s and inferior molds and paint jobs gave less attention to details. Slowly in the 1980s, Americans returned to glass and china items and a more classic Christmas look. Plastic items were out of vogue until collectors rediscovered them in the 1990s.
Santa comes but once a year, unless you’re a Santa collector. That’s a great reason to start a collection that’s fun and affordable. Merry Christmas and Happy Collecting, Georgia Caraway and her friends operate the Howe Mercantile at 107-109 East Haning. Store hours are Thursday through Saturday 12 noon until 8 p.m. All five of Georgia’s Denton history books and her book on taking care of your antiques and collectibles are available at Howe Mercantile.
