The Pride of Howe kicked off its contest season on Saturday at the Aubrey Marching Classic. The band marched in the prelims at 3 pm in what felt much more like a Texas summer day rather than the autumn of October.

"We had a good prelim run," said Howe band director Angie Liss, "but I feel like we didn't handle the heat in the playoff picture and Rains had an outstanding game plan of keeping the very well and it seemed to literally suck the wind right out of us in the last two minutes of the show"

The band finished third in 3A in the prelims and fourth overall out of all bands 1A through 4A

The finals began at 7 pm with Howe's performance scheduled for 8:45 pm page 9

The comm Howe, Va Alstyne, A others are to attend t quarterback Luke Shepperd The young signal caller ran for 99 yards on 17 carries with the longest being a 53-yard score late in the second quarter to deflate all of Howe's momentum Shepperd also completed 3 of 8 passes for 26 yards His read-option partner in running back Devin Jacks helped the Wildcats amass 227 rushing yards with Jacks carrying 18 times for 72 yards

Howe, conversely couldn't not get anything going on offense and were stymied with only 120 offensive yards Howe rushed for 69 and passed for 51 It's the lowest rushing output for Howe since the 66 yards the Dogs had a year ago against Quinlan

Rains won the toss and opened the game with the football But each team's first possession resulted in punts Rains broke through first with a 13-play, 73-yard drive that was ended on a Shepperd 5-yard scramble around the left end of the offense Rains' kicker Andrew Balthrop was successful on all PATs and the Wildcats led 7-0 with 4:18 left in the first.

Howe's next drive ended in punt formation and the ball sailed over the head of Bryce Krantz who had to field it back at the 8 yard line That resulted in a score for Rains on one play from Shepperd who scored a near identical touchdown from earlier and Rains led 14-0 with 2:32 left in the first

Howe's next possession ended in a turnover on downs when Wildcat linebacker Eliya Garrett-Enis blitzed and dropped quarterback Layton Elvington for a big loss

No scoring took place until 4:32 in the second when Mason Riggs threw a halfback pass 46 yards to Elijah Campbell who hauled it in over the shoulder and drug a defender over the goal line for the score Calley Vick's PAT was good, and Howe cut the lead to 14-7 and started to gain momentum for the first time However, Rains scored quickly with Shepperd racing 53 page 5 team is better when the competition requires heavy marketing of the product

"We've done pretty well in the past and we're better with the marketing of the robot," said Nicholas Williams "This year has been a little more difficult and we've spent a lot of energy on the robot We're finalizing our presentation I don't know what our chances are (of winning), but we're doing pretty well right now"

This year's competition will focus on the growing problem of plastic trash in the oceans The robots must be able to collect the trash with long reach arms

According to the bESTology website, every minute, one garbage truck worth of plastic is dumped into the ocean. Yearly, a colossal 1 4 billion pounds of trash end up in our beautiful oceans Of this waste, much of it is plastic

The team is provided a few necessities in a kit to build their robot, such as plywood, PVC, motor components, small rods and such But other things, such as duct tape and rubber bands may be needed in addition to the basic materials

"The gyres are made from hula hoops Trash is represented by whiffle golf balls that represent the microplastics in the ocean," said Jacob Williams "There are also water bottles that we have to be able to recover with the arms "

There are also turtles mixed in with the trash that would allow for double points if recovered

Sarah Williams, participating in her first year said the robots are supposed to stop the ocean pollution

"After the robot gets the trash, then the spotter can sort the trash into a reef blocks which the robot can lift tonto different shelves," said Sarah Williams "There are rubber duckies in the ocean due to a shipment that went overboard Most people thought that it was a bad thing because of more ocean pollution, but they were used to predict the current to find out where the trash was going to go "

The family works in a shed at the family home on Duke Street which was originally the Duke family home and most recently known as the Chisum family home.

Bulldogs

Continued from page 2 yards and ending a 3-play, 61-yard drive taking only a minute off the clock Rains extended their lead to 21-7 at the 3:32 mark before half

To make matters worse, Howe's leading rusher Cameron Blesi left the game and the premises with a concussion Wildcat's outstanding linebacker Garrett-Enis broke through the line and took the ball away from a Howe runner to give them the ball at the Howe 40 The miscue led to a 20-yard field goal by Balthrop with five seconds remaining before the half Rains extended the lead to 24-7 which was the score at the intermission Howe, facing a third and long, tried more trickery with a doublereverse attempt, but a bad exchange led to a fumble which Garrett-Enis picked up and raced 25 yards for a Rains score with 8:50 left in the third The PAT gave Rains a 31-7 lead

Getting the ball right back, Howe gave it right back on the first play when Garrett-Enis recovered a fumble at the Howe 19 yard line Five plays later, Rains scored on a 7-yard run by Duke Hurley to up the lead to 38-7 with 7:03 left in the third

Howe's next possession started at their own 16 yard line and went backwards from there Howe even tried to quick punt on third down, but Garrett-Enis blocked the punt which gave Rains the ball at the Howe 19

Rains also fumbled to give Howe the ball back at the 18, but the drive resulted in a Campbell punt

Howe's biggest moment on defense came then when Devin Porter picked up a fumble and raced 50 yards to the Rains 28 However, Howe turned the ball over on downs

Rains final points came on a 26yard field goal by Balthrop with 4:49 left in the game which ended all scoring at 41-7

Howe, with the loss moves to 3-3 on the season and 0-2 in district play The Bulldogs will face Pottsboro next Friday at home The Cardinals are 1-1 in district play after losing to Van Alstyne Friday, 41-20.
