Finisar to bring 500 new jobs three miles from Howe

At our annual Rotary Christmas Party, the question was posed to my wife, "Which famous war ended in December of 1814." I know it's a little bit of a trick to think that the War of 1812 ended in 1814, but my wife's answer was only a century and a half off. She obviously picked up on December rather than the 1814 part. I won't tell you her answer, but just think about Reagan wanting to tear down a wall. She's precious.

Our apologies to senior Peyton Streetman, also known simply as Fritter.

We've had the unfortunate habit of referring to her as Jordan Streetman ever so often over the years during basketball season. Not that we don't know better, we've been friends of the family forever, but we have a pretty decent explanation.

1. She has a sister named Jordan. 2. If 1 wasn't good enough, Streetman wears the number 23 in basketball which was of course the jersey number of Michael Jordan. This here publisher happens to be a numbers guy and memory-associates everything to numbers. I think I could spout off the entire 1986 Howe Bulldogs roster if one were to give me only jersey numbers.

Weird, I know. My brain can tell you that in 1993 Rafael Palmeiro hit .295 with 37 homers and 105 RBI, all while wearing the number 25 (except for 1989 when he wore number 3), but I can't for the life of me remember to take the trash out on Tuesday mornings.

Oh well, anyway, sorry Fritter. We love you and your sisters Jordan and LeBron, er uh, Allison.

Michelle Carney/Howe Enterprise Commerce put together their best effort in the third quarter, but still trailed Howe, 51-23. The fourth quarter was packed with play from non-starters and Howe ended up taking the fourth quarter, 11-6 to wrap up the win.

Outside of Harvey's 16, the points were distributed fairly evenly as Molly Wilson, Marissa Agee, and Cassidy Anderson each had seven points. Kaylon Cline added six points and Calley Vick had five.

Other scorers were Peyton Streetman (4), Payton Griffin (4), Madison Mosier (3), Jenna Honore (2), and Bethany Masters (1).

The Lady Bulldogs had little trouble at Lone Oak on Tuesday night. The different Howe players finished in double digits for the 6136 win. Griffin led Howe with 15 points with Streetman finishing with 14. Harvey also added 13 in the win.

Howe's second quarter eliminated any hopes for Lone Oak as the Lady Bulldogs out scored their opponents, 22-3 in the period.

Other scorers were Agee (9), Honore (6), Anderson (2), and Molly Wilson (2). Next action is Dec. 28-30 in the NCTC Tourney.

Bulldogs lose nail-biter to Bells, rebound to open district with win The Howe Bulldogs (4-4, 1-0) took on Bells Tuesday night in the city of the Panther. Howe started very slow and never were able to gain much momentum through the first half. Missed layups became the story of the game as Howe had many chances to build a base of points, but missed opportunities changed what could have been a ten point win, to a two point loss.

No other Bulldog was in doubledigits in points for the night, however, Winston Mosse had nine.

Howe trailed, 19-12 after the first quarter thanks to a fast-paced Panther offense that had the Bulldogs unable to convert short jumpers on the press. Howe's center Clay Marshall landed two quick fouls in the first quarter to change the approach Head Coach Eric Johns was intending.

The Bulldogs will not play again until after Christmas in the NCTC Tournament on Dec. 2-30.

On Friday night, Howe opened district play on the road at Lone Oak. Harvey led Howe to the 6359 win with his 23 points.

Freshman Noah Campbell contributed 15, while Devin Porter tacked on 10.

The second quarter was much like the first as Howe trailed, 36-28 at the half. In the third quarter, Howe started to slow the game down and started to hit some easy layups. Ty Harvey led Howe with 26 points and his efforts helped lead Howe to tie the game at 44-44 with 2:30 left in the third, and eventually take the lead, 46-44 with1:39 left in the quarter.

But in the fourth quarter, down 6159 with two seconds remaining, Howe's James Cowin caught an inbounds with an easy layup, but the ball went off the glass and Bells held on to the victory.

Michelle Walker/Howe Enterprise The Howe JV took an easy 49-30 win at Bells on Tuesday. The Bulldogs started quickly with a 104 lead after the first quarter thanks in part to Layton Elvington and Jalen Thornton who each totaled four points in the first.

Howe had a 26-11 lead at the half and 34-19 entering the fourth quarter.

Howe was led in scoring by Thornton with 14 points. Other scorers were Ayden Norton (9), Elvington (5), Jake Fabacher (4), Mason Moreau (4), Jake Catching (3), Hunter Bounds (2), Hunter

Brussow (2), Payton Vallier (2), and Cameron Lankford (2).

Tom Bean man sentenced to life Today Mickey Joe Griffis, 65, of Tom Bean, was sentenced to two life sentences in prison for Possession with Intent to Deliver, Heroin, 1-4 grams and Possession with Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine, 4-200 grams.

Griffis was found guilty following a day and a half jury trial. Griffis elected to have a Grayson County jury determine his sentence. On Wednesday, December 13, 2017 that same jury sentenced Griffis to the maximum sentence allowed by law on both counts and the fine of $7,000.00 on each charge. The Honorable Jim Fallon presided over the three day trial in the 15th Judicial District Court. On Wednesday, August 17, 2016, Judge Fallon sentenced Griffis for his crimes and ordered him to pay the $14,000.00 fine.

Narcotics investigators with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office began conducting surveillance on a residence in Tom Bean on January 13, 2017. The surveillance led to the development of sufficient information for a search warrant.

Later the same day, a large team of law enforcement officers executed the search warrant at 106 Bois D’Arc and recovered a large cache of drug paraphernalia, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and 3 firearms. The Sheriff’s Office had information that Griffis was a convicted felon and could be armed.

Looking to God within a fallen world was perfect and beautiful which many believe included a diseasefree atmosphere without sickness, genetic defects or any other type of fear or danger. However, when Adam and Eve sinned against God and was cast out of the garden of Eden, according to the Bible most everything changed. Unfortunately, physical and spiritual death became a part of our vocabulary.

Dr. Billy Holland One area of the vast unknown that has been the focus of speculation throughout the ages is why certain events happen that seem to be cruel and unfair. As a Christian minister and counselor, I am consistently either thinking, writing or being asked why tragedies happen when there is a God who can easily prevent them.

How many times has someone said, “If He is all powerful, then why does He allow terrible things to happen?” This leaves His followers trying to explain what we understand very little about.

Actually, the Christian worldview does not have answers to specific situations but there are general reasons why some things happen.

Matthew 5:45 mentions that nature does not discriminate between good and bad or the atheist and the believer. Suffering can come to anyone and anytime without moral cause. There are several reasons why we are vulnerable to tragedy but we only have time to observe a couple. First, we are mortal and very vulnerable against an environment that is filled with danger and death. In the beginning, God established this world with natural laws in mankind’s best interest but these laws can also cause us much harm. For example, fire can be a wonderful way to cook our food and generate heat to keep us warm but it can also be a destructive and devastating force.

Likewise, gravity is a blessing as it keeps everything in place but if we are skydiving and our parachute does not open, there will be tragic consequences. On the sixth day of creation, God said that everything

My son and his wife are dog lovers and last year they chose to put two of their dogs down because of advanced cancer and of course they were very upset. About 6 months ago they purchased an adorable puppy and she was such a loving and strikingly beautiful dog.

This past week, they let her out in the backyard like usual and about a half-hour later called for her to come in. My son started searching and thought that maybe she had escaped. You can imagine the horror when he stepped up onto the deck of their pool and saw her resting on the bottom. He dove in and retrieved her but it was too late. The gates on the deck were locked and security cameras revealed that she had made an incredible leap into the pool from the yard. We’ve all made terrible judgments and this mistake became a tragic accident. They are devastated and in this time of being heart-broken again, it was mentioned about why God did not stop this from happening. What can we say? Without being disrespectful, there are many times in our journey when the sovereignty of the Almighty seems to not make sense.

Portman named commissioner of Howe Youth Baseball Rodney Hough passed the torch of commissioner of Howe Youth Baseball to Mike Portman on Saturday evening at a public meeting intended to recruit new officers for the upcoming season.

Portman, who had been the kidpitch vice president, will hand that

There are events and situations when miracles happen and we are convinced that God stepped into the situation. Then there are other times when crazy things occur that could have easily been prevented.

We know that God is watching and is all powerful but occasionally He decides to not intervene. Why? Local Masons hosted Christmas party for clients of Texoma Community Center The Billie Mosse Masonic Lodge in Denison hosted a Christmas luncheon on December 16 for about 32 clients of Texoma Community Center who have intellectual and developmental delays. A band of local Masons provided music for the event and Santa was there to give out small gifts to the attendees. The lodge has done this for more than ten years. The TCC clients look forward to the event

every year. This is an opportunity for the TCC clients to be integrated into the community. Students from Denison High School were recruited to help with the event.

The Masonic lodge is a civic and social organization whose mission is to make good men better.

Masonic Lodges are one of the largest charitable organizations in the United States that gives back to

their local communities. It is estimated that nationally, Masons donate $2 million a day to charity from fundraisers and the Shriner Circus. The Masons and the Shriners established the Scottish Rite Hospitals for Children and the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, and all patients are treated free of charge. Locally, Masons also give scholarships to high school students and help care for widows of Masons.
