Howe's That The Howe Youth Football upcoming 5th and 6th grade team has won the Red River League Super Bowl each of the last two years that these classes have been paired together. On their Facebook page, it lists those accomplishments and team photos holding the trophies in elation after the wins. That could have played into an enthusiastic group of newcomers that want to be on a special team. Over the weekend, the team that usually fields 16 or so players now has double that amount at 32. How would you like to be Head Coach Mike Portman trying to get 32 players playing time in four 7-minute quarters. I have a feeling there are going to be quite a few disgruntled parents by the end of the season. But Portman makes the big volunteer bucks for a reason. One would imagine there will be candid conversations tonight before the first practice at Hash Field. Varsity football games will once again be broadcast here on howeenterprise.com this fall starting with the first game with the defending state champion Gunter Tigers at home on Sept. 1. We've upgraded our system and hopefully by then will have tested all aspects and will have no technical issues with the new format. New coordinators lead annual $600 reward for information football camp, discuss philosophies leading to vandals arrest
A latch that was destroyed at North Field in BiCentennial Park. Howe Public Works Director David Wortham discovered damage to the concession stand at Hash Field and a storage building at North Field ballparks located in Bi-Centennial Park. The Howe Police Department was immediately notified and took a report. This is the third time in a
month that vandalism has occurred at the ballfields located just off of Highway 75. The Howe Youth Baseball program maintains the upkeep of the facilities and after information was shared on Facebook regarding the constant battle, citizens stepped to the front in offering to help. When 'someone needs to...', it's been Thurman
New Howe Defensive Coordinator Mike Segleski works on defensive drills. The Howe Bulldogs coaching staff led the 5th Annual Bulldogs Football Camp this past week at Bulldog Stadium. Athletic Director and Head Coach Zack Hudson has assembled once again a star-studded staff of assistant coaches and they were front and center last week at the hot summer camp. New Howe Defensive Coordinator Mike Segleski is the former head coach at Aubrey and was hand-picked by the the state of Texas' winningest high school football coach G.A. Moore to succeed him in that position there in 2012. Segleski, who has since spent the last three years at Princeton. "I worked for G.A. Moore for nine years and had the opportunity to be
recommended by him to take the job when he left," said Segleski. "We struggled a little bit being in the same district with Argyle, Celina, Carrollton Ranchview, Frisco Lonestar, and their numbers were a lot higher than ours, but kids always really played really hard and I'm really proud of what we did there." Segleski will be in total command of the defense which will be new for Hudson who has always been the head coach and defensive coordinator. Howe Middle School sets date for orientations
Howe youth sports volunteer Scott Thurman (back row middle) sets a high bar for future generations. At the youth ballfields, the phrases were often heard, "Someone needs to build a better bathroom", "someone needs to build a better concession stand", "someone needs to empty the trash cans", "someone needs to mow", "someone
needs to fix the backstop", etc. Most of the time, it was Scott Thurman who put his time and sweat into the majority of those concerns. Even when he worked tirelessly on projects, he still heard Continued on page 3
All of the parents of middle schoolers will need to mark the date of Thursday, August 17 on their calendars. That night will be orientation for incoming fifth graders which will start at 7 pm in the middle school cafeteria. Starting a little earlier at 6:30 is the "Meet the Teacher" night for grades 68. The greeting will last until 8 pm. Sixth graders are asked to meet in the foyer by the
office while seventh graders will meet in the courtyard. Eighth graders will meet in the hallway near the ramp leading to the band hall.
