Hartsfield signs to play football at Hendrix College

Johnny Burnett, Assistant Head Coach at Hendrix College in Arkansas made a trip down to see Howe's Tanner Hartsfield about playing football for them A visit was scheduled with the college and the Hartsfield family Knowing that other local players such as Levi Jones of Van Alstyne will also be going to Hendrix made the decision much easier

"There's no words to describe the excitement that I'm having " said Hartsfield "My dream was to play college football I never really thought about how much work I was putting in "

Hartsfield's father John, who was a standout football player for Anna says that it was only in the last three years that he thought his son might play college football

"About three years ago I saw the work ethic and the maturity and the muscles start to come in play" said John Hartsfield and echoed by Tanner's step mother Shanna Hartsfield

The common theme that everyone talks about when it comes to Hartsfield is his work ethic Howe Head Football Coach Zack Hudson raved about his ability to out-work other people

"His intensity that he plays with is just one of those things you can't replace and you can't teach He's a little undersized for what he does, but he's one of those kids that come off the field and you feel the effects of him That's what makes him valuable There's no one that we play that doesn't respect number 70 " said Hudson

Hudson said that Hendrix is going to get a player that's not going to stop

"The more you look at college athletes and even pro athletes, some of those undersized guys end up playing and playing for a long time because their motor doesn't stop and their love for the game doesn't stop and that's the kind of kid they're going to get

Hartsfield, still only 17 years old is expected to still put on weight and eventually be a bigger kid

Over the years several newspapers have served Howe The first was the Howe Herald published by the Hall brothers in the early 1900s (we have a 1907 issue of the Herald that was useful for information for this book, thanks to Waldine Stockton Vivrett) The subscription cost was $1 00 a year The Howe Chronicle, published as early as 1917 was published by A M Ferguson (brother of Texas Governor James Ferguson) and his son, James E Ferguson The Howe Messenger was published in the 1930s and 1940s with Russell Bryant as the owner and editor The Howe Enterprise was established in 1963 by Pop Sloan Howe again had a newspaper after 20 years without one Other owners of the Enterprise have been Bob Walker, Jim and Nita Echols and present day owners are Dale and Lana Rideout (Editors Note: Monte Walker, grandson of second owner Bob Walker, purchased the Enterprise in 2014)

In the 1930s through the energetic efforts of Miss Mame Roberts, Howe gained international fame with its campaign for civic attractiveness Miss Roberts directed a drive of the Howe Garden Club that led to the creation of flower beds all over town.

Visitors to Howe were startled to see the lovely flowers, the well-kept yards, the neatly painted homes, all made possible by the efforts of Miss Roberts. Several of the nation’s magazines, including the Reader’s Digest, carried stories about Miss Mame and the wonders she worked in Howe

In 1972 Howe celebrated its 100th birthday with a grand celebration On May 8, 1986 Howe helped Texas celebrate its 150th birthday with a large Founders Day Celebration held in Downtown Howe the first Saturday in May Since that year, the Howe Chamber of Commerce has continued the tradition of the Founders Day Celebration always held the first Saturday in May Events

Howe has continued to grow over the years, with a population near 2,500 as of the preliminary 1990 census (Editor’s note: Howe’s population in 2016 is close to, if not greater than 3,000)

A new four-lane highway – the present Highway 75 – was opened in October 1967 The access road on either side of the highway was named Collins Freeway in honor of the WW Collins family The old Highway 75 became State Highway 5, also known as Denny Street With the opening of the new highway, new businesses opened up along it Most of the old buildings are still downtown and most of them are occupied (Editor’s note: In 2016, all of the remaining buildings in downtown have been restored and all are occupied Since 1991, three historic buildings were either razed or torn down.) These buildings are so full of history there is no way to tell it all

In 1964 Howe State Bank opened, the first bank in Howe since the 1930s It is located at the corner of Haning and Denny. The first board of directors organizing the bank included: A L Geer, chairman; O W Lamb of Sherman; PK Carmichael of Dallas; Geer and Edwin E Hayes of Anna; WJ Trice fo Whitewright; and E.F. Arterbury, C.C. Jones, N.R. Langford, Jack Norman, Marshall Robertson, and L S Thompson, all of Howe N R Langford was the contractor who constructed the original building Several additions have been made to the bank as it has grown in size At the present time (in 1991) Edwin E Hayes is the chairman of the board of directors and James J Shannon is the bank president

The newest edition to Founders Day will be the Interurban Kid Train sponsored by Marla Butler of Fairway Independent Mortgage The train will run a round trip route on the old 1940s Interurban route from the First Baptist Church breezeway to O'Connel Street

This year, the Howe High School Colorguard and Winterguard will perform in the 3 pm hour on Haning Street stretching from Abby's Restaurant to Gabriela's Mexican Cocina.
