Howe's That M.E. Curtis came to Howe about the time the previous generation of businessmen were making their retirement exits. Guys like G.T. McDonough and J.J. Chisum were getting out of the grocery business and the times were changing and moving faster from the still 1960s style atmosphere in Howe in the 1980s. Curtis took the baton from those aging businessmen and with his peacock strut, Boss Hogg cigar and bravado confidence, he plunged into Howe as an outsider with no family connections to the local Baptist or Methodist churches. Curtis swung a big stick in Howe for thirty years before becoming ill and liquidating property in order to make sure his family was properly taken care of.

"He's a man of few words." said Ellis. "He has taught me so much with my temperament. I used to have a lot of breakdowns, but he teaches you that every shot is a new shot and every hole is a new hole and I take it to heart. He reminds me so much of my pops (grandfather David Ellis) and I take his advice personally just as I would my pops. He's so calm and that's one thing I find very heartwarming and easy to relate with and trust." Continued on page 2
