Howe's That
Fire destroys home on Walnut Street
It is possibly the greatest day of the year for a baseball junkie and a Texas Rangers fanatic. It is Opening Day at the Ballpark in Arlington, er, uh, Globe Life Park as the young'ns call it.
A Friday night fire at 303 W. Walnut St. saw local fire departments working side by side to help contain what was eventually reported as a total loss. Howe citizen Robby Carney, along with a neighbor were the first on the scene and called 911.
Even at the age of 41, this time of year brings back that special feeling of new beginnings. As the flowers bloom and the grass starts to turn green and the leaves begin their cycle, so does the great American past time. As of right now, every newly planted flower will be the best yet and each team in the league is in first place. Only a drought and poorly timed injuries can turn a well-planned April into an ill-fated May.
Van Alstyne Fire Department was the first rescue crew to arrive and they were able to contain the fire. Tom Bean FD and Howe FD soon followed.
A day at the ballpark watching batting practice and listening to such iconic ballpark songs as Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen" or Steve Helms "Nowhere but Texas" can make a person consume 147 peanuts without even thinking. Baseball is an addiction. It can consume someone who can't get enough of the mental twists and turns and melodramas between each pitch. Anyone who says that they've seen it all in baseball and know everything about the game is in for a very hard lesson. The one thing that I do know about Major League Baseball to be a fact is that it is a law of averages game. If a vteran career .290 hitter is hitting .230 in late May, expect that guy to hit about .330 or so from June on. Don't give up on a player just because he doesn't produce early. He'll find it...unless he's 36-years-old or older. This happened with Shin Soo Choo last year. Play the averages and don't knee-jerk. You'll serve yourself well for a conversation in August .

Howe students to travel abroad Howe High School's Teacher and Coach Heath Grant started throwing around the idea of having students get first hand knowledge with the subjects they were teaching. So, they came up with the idea of having the students travel abroad. The program is called Howe Travel Abroad Program (TAP).
Gunter. This program is being established to make sure students from Howe have a chance to do something like this annually. In 2017 they will be traveling to Costa Rica and already have students signed up for that trip but will be doing another recruitment meeting at the end of April or early May.
"We worked with our partner EF Tours and came up with what we thought was an amazing chance to do exactly that." said Grant. "We selected a 10 day tour of London, Paris and Madrid. Easily three of the most recognizable and culturally rich cities in Europe."
This is what we consider to be a once in a lifetime chance for kids to travel somewhere they have never been for what is really a great price because we book everything as a group." said Grant. "Also, the program can count toward college credit and looks amazing on college applications. Its really an opportunity that we are glad to provide for kids at Howe to help them do all these amazing things."
The students will be visiting Big Ben, Picadilly Circus, The London Eye, climb the Eiffel Tower, Louvre (to see the Mona Lisa), Arc De Triomphe , dance with Flamenco dancers and much more. As of right now 18 students from Howe will be going as well as one student from
