This week, in the Patriot Pony there were several interesting world news events, including that apparently Chernobyl’ s protective shield isn’t working anymore. Did anyone guess that one as a box for our collective “Dystopian Bingo Card?”
I did notice something that might affect us more locally currently in the news this week– the “Farmer’ s Aid Package”. I am curious to know how the changes in tariffs etc. have affected our local farmers, if at all?

Thereareseveralbrandsavailable;asmartfeederhasacamerathat makesavideoclipeachtimeabird landsonitandtransmitsthisvideoto yourphoneorelectronictablet,along withbirdidentification.
Wereceivedoneasagiftaboutayear agosoIcansharetheprosandcons. First,Wi-Fiwithastrongenoughsignaltoreachanoutdoorspotisrequired.Weplacedoursoppositeour garageanditworksbestwhenthegaragedoorisopen,butwestillgetimageswiththedoorshut. Ifyouchoosea solarpoweredmodelyouwillneedto placeitinasunnyspot.Ourshasabatterythatrequireschargingwithawall plugin;wehavefoundthebatterylife tobeaboutaweek. Yourappwillalert youtoalowbatteryaswellasother conditions.
Webelievethatifasquirrelwereto jumponthefeeder,whichwehave hangingfromashepherd’scrook,the feedermightbeknockedtotheground andbreak,sowehaveplacedonlysafflowerseed,whichsquirrelsdonot like,init. However,notallspeciesgo forsafflowers,sothat’salimitation.

TexasHistoryMinute TheOldWest becamenotorious fortheviolence thatbefellcommunitiesandindividuals. Someindividuals,however,actedaspeacemakers. JesseChisolm,amerchantwho developedanetworkoftradingposts fromTexasuptoKansas,became knownforhismediationeffortsand hiseffortstoexpandcommerceinthe area. Hewasneverwealthy,buthis reputationasaguide,translator,diplomat,trader,andexplorergavehiman importantroleinshapingthe West. Hismostlastinglegacywas creatingthelegendaryChisolmTrail, whichbecameavitalpipelineforthe famouscattledrivesofthelatenineteenthcentury.
JesseChisolmwasborninthe GreatHiwasseeareainthemountains ofsoutheasternTennesseearound 1805,insidewhathadbeenCherokee territory. Hisexactdateofbirthisuncertain. HewastheoldestofsixchildrenborntoIgnatiusChisolm,aScottishimmigrantandtrader,andMartha Rogers,aCherokee. Hisfatherwas involvedinsalesofallsorts,respectableandotherwise,includingtrading slavesintheKnoxvillearea.
Chisolm’slifetime wouldbemarkedbythedramaticcollapseoftribalcontroloftheirterritories. Evenasachild,hewasalready livingwithitseffects. Bythistime, relationsbetweentheCherokeesand thesettlerswerebreaking down. ManysettlerswereencroachingonCherokeelands,seizingitfor themselvesinviolationoftreatywhile thefederalgovernmentdidlittletostop it. Bytheearly1810s,manyCherokeeswerestartingtoseethewritingon thewallandstartedmoving west. TheChisolmsleftwiththisfirst wavewestward,settlinginwhatis nowwesternArkansasforatime.
Inthe1820s,thefamily movedfurtherwestnearFortGibsoninwhatwassoontobecomethe IndianTerritory,ormoderndayOklahoma. Hisfatherbrought himintothemerchantbusiness,andhe madearespectablelivingasaguide andatrader. Chisolmsteadilybuilt andmaintainedaseriesoftrading poststhroughoutthearea.
Thoughhespentmostofhis adultlifeasamerchant,Chisolm’s mostsought-afterproductwas peace. Respectedamongbothwhite politiciansandNativeAmericantribes, hewasroutinelysoughtouttomediate disputesbetweenthetribesandthe settlers. Chisolmreportedlyspokea dozenlanguages,mostlythelanguages ofthedifferenttribesoftheGreat Plains. Asatrader,suchskillsoflanguageanddiplomacywerevitaltohis businesssuccess.
SamHouston,whileserving asPresidentoftheRepublicofTexas, soughtoutChisolmoftentonegotiate betweenTexasandthetribes. Houston himselfhadlivedamongtheCherokeesforatimeandbelievedthatpeace waspossiblebetweenthesettlersand thetribes. ChisolmmanagedtoconvinceseveraltribesintheNorthTexas areatomeetwithHouston andTexasofficialsinaseriesofmeet-
ingscalledtheTehuacanaCreek Councilsin1843and1844 nearWaco. Throughtheseefforts, severaltreatiesofpeaceandtradewere establishedbetweenTexasandthe differenttribes. Thesuccessofthese meetingshelpedexpandhisreputation asatranslatorandamediator.
Inthe 1850s,ChisolmprovidedsimilarserviceshelpingtomediatebetweenofficialsinKansasandtribalrepresentativesthere. Throughouthisefforts,Chisolmrepeatedlytriedtorelay thegoodwillandpeacefulintentions ofthetribestoleaders inTexasandKansas.
DuringtheCivilWar,tribesin theIndianTerritoryweredeeplydividedandoftensidedwiththeConfederacy. Chisolmtriedtostayoutofthe conflict,oftentradingwithboth theUnionandConfederatesides. By 1864,hewasoperatingout ofWichita,Kansas,andservingasan interpreterfortheUnionArmy. In 1865,Chisolmhopedtoresumehis tradebusinessandexpandhisrangeof customers. HeloadedateamofwagonswithgoodsandleftFortLeavenworth,Kansas,southtohistrading postnearmodernOklahomaCity. He extendedthetrailsouthtotheRedRiverinordertogiveranchersaccessto histradingpostsalongtheway. Word ofthissafeandwell-markedtrail spread. AsTexasrancherssawthe potentialprofitindrivingcattle toKansasforsaleandshipmentto easternmarkets,Chisolm’strailbecametheobviousroutetouseasthe cattledrivesbeganby1867. Aftertheendofthe CivilWar,itbecameincreasinglyobviousthatthefederalgovernmentintendedtoclampdowncontroloverthe tribesandforcethemontoreservations inspiteofexistingtreaties. Chisolmattemptedtobringtribal leaderstogetherwithfederalofficials intheIndianTerritorytodiscussthe issuesathand. Triballeaderswere reluctanttomeet,realizingthatany treatyatthatpointprobablymeanta surrender. Withintwoyears,leaders slowlygatheredtotalkwithfederal representatives. Theresultwasthe MedicineLodgeTreaty,aseriesof threetreatiessignedbetweenthetribes andthefederalgovernmentstartingin October1867. Thetreatystipulated thatthetribeswouldbeassignedreservationterritorieswithintheIndianTerritory,effectivelyputtinganendto theirwayoflife.
InApril1868,Chisolmdied suddenly,apparentlyoffoodpoisoning,whileintheIndianTerritory. He wasrespectedforhiseffortstobroker peaceontheplains. Hiseffortsatexpandingtrade,however,wouldbecomehismostfamouslegacy. Ashe died,thegreatageofthecattledrives wasjustbeginning. Asmoreranchers beganshippingtheircattle toKansasfromthelate1860sthrough the1880s,histrailbecameapopular routeandsoonbecameknownas theChisolmTrail.
Adividedheartlivesin denialanddeception I’mreminded againofthe quotefrom ScottFitzgerald,“Youdo notwritebecauseyou wanttosay something; youwritebecauseyou havesomethingtosay.”I canrelatetothosewhoarecalledto expresstheburdenswithintheirhearts andthankfulfortheopportunityto sharemine.Thesefreedomsmaynot alwaysbewithusastheworldisbecomingaggressivelyopposedtoGod andHisdisciples.Iwriteformany secularpublicationsaroundthecountryandI’moftenwarnedabouttoning itdownwithJesusasitmightoffend thosewhodisagree.I’maeditorand contributorforacoupleofmagazines, andwastoldtheotherdaythatmy Christmasarticlewasnotfamily friendly.ToomuchJesus.Ioftenwonderifcompromisingwouldbebetter thanhavingnoplatformatall,butat whatpointdowedrawtheline?
TheLivingonPurposecolumnisrecognizedasasourceofencouragement andfaith,nevertheless,asawatchman ImustneverignoreHiswarnings.Pastorsandteacherswillagreeit’seasier totalkaboutdoctrinesandBiblical history,butit’sasolemnresponsibility andpersonalsacrificetodeliveraspecificandurgentmessagefromGod Himself.IntheBiblewhenHewould chooseaservantthatHecouldtrust, oftentheirobediencebroughtpersecutionandforsome,itcostthemtheir lives.Thisishappeningrightnow.I’m referringtothosefewindividualsthat arenotafraidtospeakdivinetruth aboutsineveniftheyaresilencedwith force.Thereligious“fluff”willcontinueadaptingandignoringasapartof theirself-preservation,butsadlythis fearofoffendingiscausingmany churchestoreconsidertheirstand againstsinasasolutiontomaintaining financialsuccess.
Alongwithmostmodernassemblies reinventingthemselves,wenoticea declineinthepromotionofprayer. Whyisthis?Becausethemasses wouldratherbecozyandcomfortable, tobeentertained,andlistentoshort “feelgood”devotionsthatarenonthreatening.Spiritualwarfareandseriousprayerdoesnotfitintothisformat, eventhoughintercessiongeneratesthe poweroftheHolySpirit’spresencein theservicesandincreasesdiscernment, anointing,andmaturity.Whenprayer wasremovedfromthepubliceducationsystem,theenemywonamajor battle,butwhydowenothearmore abouthowtheabsenceofapraying churchhascausedaspirituallypowerlessnation?Onereasonistheaverage religiouspersononlycallsforprayeris whentheyneedsomething.Ifprayer wasatoppriorityofChristians,it wouldchangetheworld.
HowoftenarewedesperateforGod?
DoweanticipateHimwhisperingfor ustogosomewhereprivateandseek Him?IrealizeItalkaboutsurrendering ourwillallthetime,butIdonotapologizeasitisthekeytoaccomplishing His.Ourfreewillisthecommandcenterwithinthehumanexperiencethat haseverythingtodowithourspiritual connectionwithourCreator.Untilthe wordofGodconvictsourwilland mind,andthenweobeyHisdemands, howcanwebecometransformedinto Hisimage?Ifwechoosetofillour mindswiththedistractionsofthe world,wewillnotbeconvictedtopray orhaveapassiontowalkintheawarenessofHispresence.So,whyisthe reverentialfearoftheLordhardly mentionedanymore?Becausethe massesdonotwanttohearthatlukewarmnessisaresultofbeingfilled withmoreoftheworldthantheHoly Spirit.Wearewhatwethinkandwhen werefusetoprotectourconscience,it becomescontaminated.Whenpleasurebecomesmoreimportantthan pleasingGod,ourdirtyheartseparates usfromHim.
However,ifweallowGodtopurifyus withHisrefiningfire,thereisnoway wecancontinuebeinga hypocritical facade.Wehavetwochoices:continue pledgingallegiancetothedarkness,or becomealivingsacrificeforChrist. Wecan’tlovetwomastersatthesame time,andbeingneutralisautomatically servingthedarkness.Beyondthemotivationaltalksandinspirationalstories, wemustownallaspectsoftruth,we mustdemonstratewhatweconfess.If wereallywanttobeholy,theonlypersonstoppingusisus.We’veheard aboutbeingborn-again,butwhena personacceptsChristastheirSavior andLord,theynolongerliveforthemselves.Allcontrolhasbeengivenover totheirnewMaster,andtocontinue livingexactlythesame“after”we makeourholyvowtoJesusisafraud, denial,andadeception
