Congratulations to the High School Band! We will have an in depth article next week about details of the competition.
I was never in band and don’t understand much about it but I did gain appreciation this week after briefly being able to attend their last rehearsal. There was so much preparation, extreme attention to detail, discipline and talent involved. I realized I had previously viewed band similar to how many people view running.As an outsider, it looks like a simple thing, but as someone who has performed in it and coached it, I can attest that people don know a drop in the bucket of all it entails and asks of an athlete. I was humbled seeing that band is the same way. What an amazing, collaborative effort! I am excited to learn more and bring you all more information about this year’ s competitions next week!

In this case, that was a big part of the story for Mr. Morris and I was thankful to get to sit and speak with him as his home is almost finished. What is your favorite part of the position?
MyfavoritepartofservingonCityCouncilisbeingabletomakeameaningfuldifferenceinthecommunity.Itrulyenjoyworkingwithresidents,listeningtotheirconcerns,andturningthoseconversationsintopracticalsolutions.Collaboratingwithfellowcouncilmembers,localorganizations,and citystafftoimproveservices,infrastructure,andqualityoflifeisincrediblyrewarding.
What do you hope to achieve/see change while you are on the Council?
Ultimately,mygoalistoensurethatthedecisionswemaketodayleadtolong-termstability,economicdevelopment,andanimprovedqualityoflifeforeveryoneinourcommunity.
What are some of your favorite things about the city of Howe?
SomeofmyfavoritethingsabouttheCityofHoweareitsstrongsenseofcommunityandthewaypeoplegenuinelylookoutforoneanother.There’sasmall-town charmherethatyoudon’tfindjustanywhere neighborsknoweachotherbyname,localbusinessessupportcommunityevents,andpeopletakeprideinwherethey live.

Sheexplainedthatnotonlylocal businessesandcitizens,butalsobusinessesthatwerenotlocaldonatedto thisproject.“Thereweresomany Godthingsinthis(…)someofour biggestpuzzlepiecesthatwerefulfilledwerejusttooeasy.WhatI thoughtwasgoingtobeincredibly doubtfulturnedintomydoubtbeing eliminatedhalfwaythroughthepro-

OverallspeakingoftheprojectGibbs said,“Thishomeisareflectionofthe generosityofpeopleandHowe(…) andeveryoneofthecompaniesinvolvedbroughttheirA-game,they didn’tthrowustheirhand-me-downs orinterns,wehadbusinessowners here,makingsurethingsweredone right.Gibbsexplainedthatthesuppliesfundedforthroughdonorsand donatedthroughcompanieswere highqualitymaterialsandthehouse wasbuiltverywellfromtheground up.“ItwasjustbeautifulhowGod workedinthecommunity,andnot onlythecommunityofcitizensbut alsoofbusinessowners.Traditionally, peopleandbusinessownerssaythey aretoobusy,theysaywithsituations likethisthatsomeoneshoulddo somethingaboutthat.However,itis astounding,wedidn’traisewhatwe raisedandaccomplishwhatweaccomplishedandhavemoneyleftover withpeoplesaying,someoneshould, butinsteadpeopleactuallydid.”

Irememberreadinganewspaperarticleyearsagoaboutamomwhowent onstrike.Shewastiredofdoingeverythingwhileherfamilydidn’tseemto noticeorhelp.So,shetookherchair outside,madeasign,andrefusedto workuntilthingschanged.
Atthetime,myoldestwasmaybeten yearsold,andIfeltthatstorydeep down.Iwasinthethickofit doing allthethings,withlittleappreciation andevenlessrest.Ifollowedthenews andsawothermomsjointhetrend.
I’vethoughtaboutthatmomalotover theyears especiallyinthemoments whenIfeelunseenbythepeopleIlove most.I’mtheirbiggestcheerleader,but sometimesitfeelslikeI’malsothefirst tobecriticizedwhenIaskforhelp.
Likeyou,I’vehadmyshareof“throw inthetowel”days.Motherhoodisso muchmorethancutepicturesand snuggles.It’sconstantcleaning,budgeting,shopping,fixing,cooking,chauffeuring,runningforgottenitemsto school,keepingupwithlaundry,and caringforpets alltheinvisible thingsthatkeepourhomesrunningbut oftengounnoticed.
Today,asIwasloadingthedishwasher (again),Ithoughtofthatmomon strike.Icouldthrowinthetowel,sit down,andtellmyfamilytopickup
theslack.ButIwon’t andInever will.BecauseI’mtheonewhokeeps thisfamilymovingforward.Igetthe front-rowseattothegood,thebad, andeverythinginbetween.
Myfamilyneedsme andIneed them.I’dneverwanttojeopardize thatbygivingup.Myhusbandworks full-timeandworriesifhe’sdoing enoughforus,justlikeIdo.Ourkids helpwhenasked andoccasionally evenwhenthey’renot.Likemost teensandyoungadults,they’refocusedonthemselvesalittlemorethan I’dlikerightnow.Butthey’llget there.
So,Ikeepshowingup.Icalleveryone togetherforscripturesandprayers eachnight.Iinsistonsittingdownat thetablefordinner.Iaskforhelp withoutguilt-tripping(mostdays).I expectalotfromthem,andtheyexpectalotfromme.Andsomehow,it works.

Birdwatching Sue and Dick Malnory Everydayweputoutaspecialtreatforwhat ornithologistDavidSibleycallsa“truly unmistakable”bird,theBlueJay.Usually withinhalfanhourorsothehandfulof peanutsintheshellhavedisappeared,gobbled upbytheselargecolorfulbirds.
Inadditiontoour“treat”,theBlueJays’diet consistsofinsects,acornsandseeds. Occasionallytheywillcometooursuetfeeder whenitisfilledwithapeanutsuetmix, andtheylovethebirdbath.
Youmightsaytheircallisaboutasmusicalas adonkey’sbraying,buttheycanalso makeawhistlingcallandcanmimichawks.
AninterestingfactabouttheBlueJayand

TexasHistoryMinute JohnWesleyHardinwas oneofthemost violentfiguresofa violentage. Born inBonhamtoa Methodistpreacherin1853,he quicklymovedtoalifeofcrime. By thetimehewas18,hekilledperhaps eightpeople. Thiswasonlythebeginningofabloodycareerasagunfighter.
HeescapedTexasauthorities in1871afterkillingtheWacotown marshalandfoundworkonacattle drive. Accordingtoseveralsources,he engagedinseveralgunfightswith would-becattlethievesthatleftmaybe fivemendeadbeforearriving inKansas.
ItwasAugust1871thatsaw oneofhismostnotoriouskillings. He wasinAbilene,Kansas,thenanotoriouslyriotoustrailheadtown. Hehad fallenintoadrunkenstuporaftera nightofgamblingandretiredtoahotel roomforthenight. Aneighborinthe roomnextdoorstartedsnoringloudly, thenoisereverberatingthroughthe thinwalls. Hardinstartedshoutingat themanabouthissnoring,tono avail. Stilldrunk,Hardinpulledout hisgunsandstartedfiringthroughthe walls,shootingthesnoringmaninthe head,killinghiminstantly. Hardinthenjumpedoutofhissecond-storywindowtoavoidarrest,stole ahorse,andthenrodebacktoTexas.
Twomonthslater,hefound himselfinanothergunfightwith twoTexasstatepolicemen,killingone andwoundinganother. Heclaimedto havekilledthreemembersofaposse nearAustin. Afterseveralmoregunfights,heinjuredanotherstatepolicemannearHemphillinJuly1872. In August,hewasshotafteranargument overapokerhandinTrinity. Oncehis identitywasconfirmedbylocalauthorities,hewasarrestedbutaccidentallyshotwhileincustody. After recoveringfromhisinjuries,heescapedthecountyjailandwasonthe runagain.
InMay1874,hekilledDeputySheriffCharlesWebbinasaloonin thecentralTexastown ofComanche. Thekillingenraged townspeople,resultinginthelynching ofHardin’sownbrotherasheescaped fromBrownCountytoFlorida. Texas authoritiessetalargerewardforhis capture. Hardinwasontherunfor nearlythreeyearsbeforeTexasRangerscapturedhimona traininPensacolainAugust 1877. Rangersknockedhimunconsciousanddraggedhimback toTexasfortrial. Thistime,there wouldbenoescape.
HewasfoundguiltyinJune 1878andsentencedto25yearsinprison,asurprisinglylightsentenceforthe time. Heservedhistimeatthestate prisoninHuntsville,andtriedand failedseveraltimestoescape. Inspite ofhiscrimes,hestudiedlawandtheologyandeventuallyrantheprisonSundaySchool. InFebruary1894,hewas releasedforgoodbehavior,thoughhe stillhadeightyearsleftonhissentence.
Afterhisrelease,heplotted hisnextcareermoveandsomehow decidedthatbecominganattorneywas
thebestfit. Hepassedthebarexam andmovedtoGonzales. Heleftshortlyafterwardwhenheshotamanona $5bet. HisnextmovewastoEl Pasowherehespenttimescrambling formoneyinpokergamesandtrying tofindlawclients.
InAugust1895,hisgirlfriend wasarrestedinElPasopoliceofficer JohnSelman,Jr.,onachargeofpossessionofafirearmwithinthecity limits. HardinangrilyconfrontedSelmanandsupposedlypistol-whipped him. Thenextday,Selman’sfather, JohnSelman,Sr.,hadhisownargumentwithHardinovertheincident. TheelderSelmanhadhisown problemswiththelawandhadkilleda numberofmeninhisowngunfights. Hourslater,findingout thatHardinwasgamblingatthelocal AcmeSaloon,Selmanwalkedinand shotHardininthebackofthe head. HewasquietlyburiedinEl Pasothenextday.
Intheend,themanwholived bythegundiedbythegun. Asfor Selman,heescapedconvictionbut waskilledinagunfightwithaU. S.Marshalthenextyear.
SinceHardin’sdeath,many studieshavebeendoneonhiswild career. Hardinrecountedhisownlife inabookthatwaspublishedposthumouslyin1895. Asinlife,somany detailsofhiscareerwereembellished orcouldneverbeverified. The1956 filmTheLawlessBreedwasloosely basedonHardin’sautobiography. He wasalsofeaturedinTexaswriterLarry McMurtry’sTheStreetsofLaredoin 1993. MorethanacenturyafterHardin’sdeath,hestilldrawsfascinationoveralifeasagunmanthatleft morethantwodozenpeopledead.

Mostpeople assumethespecialdayis spelled“Veteran’sDay”;however,the daydoesnotbelongtoveterans,buthonorsallveterans,sonoapostropheisneeded.Also,VeteransDayisnotthesameas MemorialDay,asthisdayofhonorisa timetorememberthosewholiterallygave theirlivesforourcountry,particularlyin combatorfromwoundssustainedinbattle.VeteransDay,whichwasoriginally calledArmisticeDay,respectsallthose whohaveservedthecountryinwaror peace,livingordeceased,andisintended toshowappreciationfortheirmilitary service.
Whenwethinkaboutthosewhohave servedournation,werealizethatmany menandwomenhavepaidagreatprice tryingtodefendandprotectus,andweare trulygrateful.Wecanalsolookaround andseemanywoundedwarriorswhoare facedtolivewithphysicaldisabilities alongwithseriouspsychologicalproblemsresultingfromwhattheyhavegone through.Thoughwemightnotbeaware oftheseverityofthissituation,thereisan ongoingphenomenonregardingthehigh rateofsuicideamongU.S.militaryveterans.Accordingtoareportpublishedby theUnitedStatesDepartmentofVeterans Affairsin2016,whichanalyzed55millionindividualcasesfrom1974to2014, alongwithmorerecentdata,tragically confirmedthatanaverageof22veterans commitsuicideeachday.InMay2019, PresidentTrumpsignedanexecutiveorderforaninitiativetocounterthishorrible reality.Theprogramaimstoequipstate andlocalgovernmentswiththeresources necessarytoidentifyandinterveneinscenarioswhereveteransmaybeatrisk.Includedwithintherecord$80billionfor veteranhealthservicesis$10billionallocatedtomentalhealthservices.
I’mremindedofastoryaboutayoung mannamedJoshwhosufferedatraumatic braininjuryinIraqandwhichlefthim withextremehopelessnessanddepression.HehadbeendeployedSouthwestof Baghdad,whereduringanattack,amortar exploded10feetawayfromhim,leaving himseverelywoundedandwithaonewaytickethome.Sixmonthslater,onone particularwinterevening,hewasreally havingahardtimetryingtofighttheshadowsoffearandsadness.HisKa-Barknife waslyingonthetablebesidehiscomputer,wherehehadjustwrittenalettertrying toexplainhistorment.Hesteppedoutside tositonthecoldandwetcementsteps, justwantingtoenditall.Heremembers promisinghimselfthattonightIwill,ashe tookanotherdragfromhiscigarette.Staringoutintothedarkness,henoticedsomethingmovingandsoondiscovereditwas akittenthatwasslowlywalkingtoward him.Itwassoakingwetbutfriendly,and obviouslywithbeingsoskinny,itwas hungry.Itwasatomwithblackandwhite patches,andwhenJoshreachedouttopet him,themysteriousvisitorleanedintohis touchandstartedtopurr.Thisemotional connectionwithanotherlivingbeingtriggeredsomethingdeepwithinJosh’sheart
ashefelthottearsrunningdownhisface inthecolddrizzle.Thekittendidnotshow fearbutjustkeptstaringathimwithbeautifulgreeneyes.Infact,Joshsaysthisinnocentcreatureseemedtounderstandhow desperatelyIneededafriendatthatvery moment.
Hecarriedhisunexpectedguestinside, driedhimoff,andgavehimsomefood. Hisplantoenditallhadbeendistracted.
