We’ve officially hit the “Dog Days of Summer” and the heat even slows down the news apparently, this year, at least!
The slow period in news makes me think of slow times in life. Do we try to “fill the space” to fill a void in ourselves or fill it out of possibly perceived guilt that we should do more in this world that glorifies busy-ness? Or do we just take it for what it is? What happened to children and adults being bored? I’m not talking about– “the Ipad died and I’m sitting around for 15 minutes bored until it charges” - I’m talking about those times of boredom where the void creeps up on you– whatever that is. I feel like those were the times that adults used to go seek friendships– call up a friend to come over and have coffee, and talk etc..
The “old timers’knew how to do this– because a lot of them didn’t mask or fill the empty spaces in life with junk like social media “doom scrolling”, as we do now. Maybe the lost connections are because we have lost the art of allowing time to just “be” - whether by ourselves or with friends and family. Maybe next time the “news of your life” is slow– pick up the phone and call that friend, go get coffee, go play disc golf, etc. Slow times and voids don’t have to be filled with “junk articles”, maybe just let it be enough and see what comes of the extra space in your life.

Somefriendsarelong-distance.We textortalkmonthly.Somearelocal wecatchuponwalksorwhileourkids play.Somearemysister-in-lawsor cousins.Someonlyhavetimetotalk duringworkouts.Someareloudand warm,greetingmewithabig“Hey girl!”andahug totallynotmycomfortzone,butIlovethemforit.Some arewisementors.Somechallenge me.Somesimplyliftmeup.
Andit’shealthy.Ineedallofthem. Theyhelpmegrow,laugh,cry,and carrytheload.
Shouldn’tweteachourkidsthatit’s okaytohavedifferentkindsoffriendships?Thatit’snotacompetition?That morefriendsdoesn’tmeanlesslove it meansmoresupport?

TexasHistoryMinute Everysooften, newsreports emergeofcourt casesthathinge uponthemeaning ofaword,ora spellingerror,or eventhecorrect placementofpunctuation. Legaldocumentsandstatutesoftenhavesuch complicatedconditionsorphrasesthat suchexactprecisionisdemanded. OnefamousTexascaseactually determinedtheentireoutcomeofan election,allhingingonthemeaningof asimplesemicolon.
TheSemicolonCase,asithasbecome called,eruptedbecauseofapassagein thestate’s1869constitution. Thepassageregardingelectionssimplyread thatstateelectionswouldbeheld“at thecountyseatsoftheseveralcounties untilotherwiseprovidedbylaw;and thepollsshallbeopenedforfour days.” Littlethoughtwasgiventothe details. InMarch1873,thestatelegislaturepassedalawallowingtheelectionstobeheldoutsidethecounty seat. However,electionswerelimited toonlyoneday.
The1873electionbecameabitter showdownbetweentheincumbent, RepublicanGov.EdmundJ.Davisand DemocratRichardCoke. Davishad movedtoTexasasayoungmaninthe 1840sandbecameanattorneyand laterservedasageneralintheUnion ArmyduringtheCivilWar. Hebecamegovernorin1870andbecame increasinglyunpopular. Coke,alsoan attorney,wasaVirginianativewho eventuallysettledinWaco. HevolunteeredfortheConfederatearmyduring theCivilWarandbecameajudgeafter thewarended,eventuallyrisingtothe stateSupremeCourt. IntheDecember 2contest,Cokewonwithmorethan 67%ofthevote.
Bothsideschargedirregularities againsttheother;attorneysgathered. Thefirstcaseappearedbefore thestateSupremeCourtjustafew dayslater. AmanknownonlyasRodriguezhadbeenchargedinHarris Countywithattemptingtovote twice. Hislawyers,however,saidhis arrestwasillegalbecausetheelection itselfwasillegal. RodriguezwasallegedlyimprisonedinHouston,butDemocratsbelievedhehadbeenhiredby thedefeatedsheriffofHarrisCounty,a Republican,toinvalidatetheentire electiononatechnicality. TheHarris Countydistrictattorney,representing theStateofTexasattheSupreme CourtinAustin,arguedthatthecase shouldbedismissedasthewholeaffair wasapoliticalquestionandnotalegal one.
Thethree-judgecourt,appointedby Davis,disagreedandorderedthecase tocontinue. TheSemicolonCase camedownto,assomanylegalargumentsdo,understandingthemeaning ofthefineprint.
Thesemicolonistypicallyusedinsentencestoconnecttwoindependent clausesthatarenotconnectedwitha conjunctionortoreplacecommas whenwritingliststhatcontainaddi-
tionalcommas. Thepreciserulesregardingusagehaveshiftedsince thesemicolonbeganappearingregularlyinEnglish-languagewritinginthe sixteenthcentury.
Rodriguez’slawyersarguedthatthe electionwasillegalbecausewhenthe legislaturechangedtheelectionlaw ninemonthsearlier,itonlyhadthe powertochangethelocationsofpollingplacesandnotthenumberofdays ofvoting. Thesemicolon,lawyers argued,madetheclauseonthefourdayvotingperiodseparatefromthe restofthesentenceandmeantthatthe legislaturedidnothavethepowerto changethenumbersofvotingdays withoutchangingtheconstitutionitself.
TheTexasSupremeCourtthusruled thattheelectionwasillegal. Rodriguezwasfreetogo;Texaspoliticsexplodedinthemeantime.
Daysofprotestsmetthecourt’sdecision. ThousandsgatheredattheState CapitolinAustinwhileDavisbarricadedhimselfinhisofficeinaneffort toholdpower. Cokeignoredthedecisionandproclaimedhimselfgovernor. Dayslater,Davisresigned.
TheConstitutionof1876replacedthe 1869document. Ithasservedthestate eversince,regardlessofsemicolons. Foreverafterward,thecourtserving underthe1869constitutionwouldbe derisivelyreferredtoas “TheSemicolonCourt.”
Intheend,the mightysemicolonprevailed. Aside fromthepoliticalcarnageitcaused,the casestandsasacriticalreminderofthe importanceofproperpunctuationand precisionwithwriting. Evenwhena teachermaynolongerbearoundto gradeanyparticularwriteronmatters ofpunctuation,someoneisstillwatching.
Fearlesswarriorsdonot hideunderthebed It’snotreallya secretabout therebeing suchathingas goodandevil. Yes,Iknow foreverystatementthereisa counterargument,aseven afewpeople denytheearth isround.But, generally speaking,themassesaretosomedegreeawareofthegoodGod,baddevil concept.WithintheChristianfaith,it’s believedthatGodisinfinite,perfect, representsthelightandeverything good,andisintotalcontrolofall things.Onthedarkside,Satanisadestructivespiritualentitywhoworks aroundtheclocktryingtodisrupt God’splans.Thisincludesunleashing arelentlessbarrageofdamagingattacksandevilinfluencesagainstthe humanrace.Whatdoyouthinkabout thissummary?Doyouacceptthis viewofwhatishappeninginthespiritualrealm?
WeseeintheBiblehowthisbattlewas happeningintheGardenofEden,and ithasneverstopped.Again,oneneeds tosettlewithintheirconsciencewhetherornottheBibleinstructionsand accountsaretrueornot.Forthosewho embracetheBibleasthetruthof God’spromisesandwarnings,thereis goodnewsinknowingthatJesuswent tothecrossandrosefromthedeadin ordertosaveusfromsinandprove thatGodistheultimateauthorityover everything.ThisgivesusChristians peaceandsecuritytoknowthateven thoughthewarisintense,wecanbe victoriousoverthedarknessbecause lightovercomesdarknessandgreater istheLordwholivesinusthanhethat isintheworld.
Forthosewhoaremoreexperienced, knowledgeable,andinvolvedwith spiritualwarfare,theyhavelearnedthe closertheChristianwalkswithGod, themoreintensethebattle.Wecansee thisinthelifeofChristasthedevil knewwhoJesuswasandthepurpose ofHismission.However,whenSatan thoughthehaddefeatedJesusandpreventedHimfromestablishingHis kingdom,hewasdeceived.Thedevil realizedhehadlostwhenChristrose fromthedead,andthatdyingonthe crosswasactuallytheintentionofGod fromthebeginning.NoonetookJesus’life,Hegaveitwillinglytoopen thewayofredemptionthroughHis bloodsacrifice.SatanlaughedatJesus onthecross,buttrembledinfearwhen herealizedGod’splanofsalvationhad workedperfectly.
ThisiswhytheChristiancanboldly declarethattrustingGodischoosing thewinningside.InMatthewchapter 4wereadwhereSatanandJesusactuallyhadaconversation.Thedevilwas tryingtoofferJesusadealsothathe couldkeepspreadinghisnegativeinfluences.JesusstoodagainstHim whichallowsustoseetheimportance ofunderstandingtheresponsibilitiesof
spiritualauthority.Yousee,withGod weareamajoritynomatterhowmany demonsfightagainstus.Ithinkit’s oddthatwithsomanywhoclaimtobe God’ssoldier,yetwhenspiritualwarfareismentionedtheybecomeafraid andwanttochangethesubject.The sameistruewhenaskedaboutdemonstratingspiritualgiftsorcastingour demons.Veryfewhaveeverpersonallyengagedcombatagainsttheenemy. Whyisthis?
IftheaverageChristiantrulybelieves thedarksideisreal,butavoidspraying againstit,somethingiswrong.Most realizetheyhavenotdevelopedtheir faithordiscernmentandthusarenot confidentinthisarea.Othersthinkthat whathappenswillhappenandthat Godwillfightforthem.Whateverthe excusespeoplehidebehind,thereality ofJohn10:10rarelycrossestheir mind.Itseemstheenemyofoursoul remindsthemofahornetsnestto whichaslongastheydonotpokeat him,hewillleavethemalone.Hosea 4:6mentionsthatpeoplesufferfrom thelackofunderstandingspiritual knowledgeandsadlyourcleverhumannaturehasfiguredoutthatpretendingtobeignorantismucheasier thanbeingaccountable.Ephesians 6:12remindseveryChristianwhywe arecommandedtousethearmorof God.Thehelmet,sword,andshieldis forfightingonthefrontlinesofintercession,butmostfollowershavestored theseinthecloset,seeingthatit’smore comfortabletoreadwarstoriesthanto enlist.So,whenwillGod’swarriors awakenandconfesstheyhavefallen asleepontheirwatch?Whenwillthe followersofChristturnawayfrom meaninglessdistractionsandrespond tothetrumpetsofwar?
