Whatweresomeoftheobstacles duringyourcampaign?
Thefirsttwoyears,especiallythe firstyearwasverydifficult.Itwas verydifficultbecauseIfeltlikethere werealotofobstacles.Therewerea lotofpeoplethatwereinapositionof authoritywhodidnotwantmeas mayor.Overall,Ifeltlikethepublic wasverysupportiveofme andalot ofpeopleencouragedmetorun.Peopleweretrulyexcitedwhenthey foundoutIwasgoingtorun,itwas asthoughsomeofthemfeltfinally wehaveasolutiontoaproblem.It seemedbasedonwhatcitizensexpressedthatanongoingproblemwas therewerejustissueswithinthecity governmentitselfandcitizensdidn't feellikethingswerebeingranefficientlyandappropriately.Somethat spoketomefelttheycouldn’tmakea complaintiftherewasaproblemand itbedealtwith,theyseemedtofeel therewasasenseofhopelessnessfor ourcity,thatthingswouldnever change,wouldneverimprove,orwe wouldnevergrow.
Doyoufeeltheissuesyousawduringyourcampaignandthestateof theCitywereduetotheadministrationimmediatelybeforeyouor wasitalong-termproblem?
Ithinkit'sitwasitwasalong-term problem.Peoplehavedifficultywith change.IknowI'vespokenonthis alreadyinoneofyourarticles,but peoplehavedifficultywithchange becausewelikewhatwe'reusedto. Thingsarealwaysacertainway,so weshouldalwaysdoitthatway-but thatdoesn'tmeanit'salwaysgoodfor us.Ifeltliketherewasalotofintimidationgoingon,whetheritwaslegitimateornot,Idon'treallyknow,buta lotofpeoplegenuinelyexpressed theyfeltintimidatedbyothersin power.Theydidnotfeellikethey couldopenlyexpresstheirfeelingsor theirconcernsaboutwhateversituationtheywantedtotalkabout.When Ifirstdecidedtorunformayor,Ihad noideathatwehadnothadamayoralelectionin21years.Iwasindisbelief,howdoesthathappen?
Whatmadeyoudecidetorunfor Mayor?Iunderstandyouhadno previouspoliticalbackground.
IdecidedtorunbecauseIfeltcalled. Thatisright,Ihadzeropolitical background-IneverthoughtinamillionyearsthatIwouldbeinpolitics. Butforme,I'maChristianandIfelt liketheLordplacedthatcallingon myheartthatthatwassomethingI wassupposedtodo.Ihadnopolitical background,butIdoknowhowto operateandrunabusiness-notjust runabusiness,butrunaneffective business,onethatcanbesuccessful.I ambusinessmindedandIcanorganizepeople.I'maleaderandIhave goodorganizationalskills,agood understandingoffinancesandhowto managefinances.I'magoodcommunicatoranditseemspeoplehave
alwaysfeltcomfortablearoundto talktomeaboutwhatevertheirsituationis.IdobelievethatIhaveagift ofdiscernment,andsothere'ssome thingsIjustfeellikeIknow.Ifelt liketheLordspoketomeandsaidI wassupposedtorunformayorandI neverforasecond,doubtedthatand Ireallyneverlookedbackonthat,I neverdoubtedthatIwouldwinbecauseIknewifthat'swhatIwas supposedtodo,thenGod would makeaway.
IunderstandasaChristianthere arecallingsplacedonourlivesbut justfromapersonalperspective, wasthereeverapointintimeyou feltlikemaybethiswasn’twhat youweresupposedtodo?
Yeah,likeyouknowwhatyou're supposedtodobutfromahuman perspectiveitwasnotaneasycampaign-Itwashard.Fromthehuman perspective,thereweremanytimesI waslike,ohmygosh,thisisalotof work!Awholelotofwork-maybe thisissomethingIshouldnothave done.Butthatwasmedoubtingmy ability,mypersonalability,not doubtingtheLord'sability.
Whatweresomeissuesyousawin theCitywhenyouranforMayor andinyourfirsttermthatyou havefollowedthroughon?
Duringmycampaignwehadjust transitionedfromwellwatertowater fromLakeLavonontheEastsideof Howe.Thattransitiondidnotgo well.(Therewasmoreelaboration hereonwhatcausedthewaterissues andwhatwasoccurring,buttheeditorleftthatoutduetogeneral knowledgemosthaveofthesituation).Therewasnoappealtodrink, bathe,washclothes,etc.inbrown/ orangewater.Ifeeltheissueatthe timewasthatalthoughsomethings arebeyondourcontrolandthepreviousadministrationcan’tbe blamedforthediscoloredwater,the citizenswerenotcommunicated with.Thecitizenswerenotprepared despitethatthepossibilityofthat issuewasknownaheadoftimedue toissueswiththewaterinothercitiesinourco-opinthesamesituation priortoourswitchover.WheneverI becamemayorIfoundouttheyhad notbeenflushingthelines,which endeduphelpingoursituationonce thelineswerebeingflushed.WhenI foundouttheyhadnotbeenflushing thelinesIaskedtheadministratorto havepublicworksstartflushingthe lines.Weneededtobeproactivein makinganot-so-greatsituationbetter.
Inmyopinion, Ifeellikeoverallthe transparencycouldhavebeena wholelotbetter.Atthetimewedid nothaveaCityFacebookpage,after IwaselectedIhadMonteWalker, createusone.Astechnologyevolves wehavetoevolveandreachthecitizens,wecan’talwayswaitforthem toreachouttous,wehavetoreach outtothem.

Therewerealotofproblemswith TexasVitalCare,ourEMSservice. Theysaidtheyhadfailedtoreacha contractagreementwiththeCity,and theCityhadnotpaidthemfornearly fourmonths.WewerelookingatlosingourEMSservice.Thatmademe question,arewepayingourbills?It turnedouteventhecityofVan Alstynehadnotbeenpaid-Idida PublicInformationActrequestfor somethingthattheyhadowed,(anda severalotherissuesinotherareas).In myopinion,Ifeellikethere'snoreasonweshouldn'tbepayingourbills.
AnotherthingIranonwasinfrastructureandroadsimprovement.Idofeel likethatissomethingI'mproudofthat eventhoughwehaven'tfixedallthe roadsinthecityofHoweanditseems likethenumberofroadsthatwe've hadfixedareminimalIactuallywas toldbythethepreviouscountycommissionerthatwhenwehadthefirst fiveroadsredoneafterIwaselected, thosewerethefirstfiveroadsthatthe cityofHowehashaddoneinin10 years.I'mprettyproudofthat.This yearwehavefivemoreroadsthis summerwearehavingdone.Mygoal istohaveroadsdoneeveryyearand ofcoursewe'relimitedonhowmany wecandobecausewe'relimitedon funds.
Arethosebillallpaidoffcurrently?
Absolutely.Thatwasoneofthefirst thingsImadesurethatwastakencare of.WhenIappointedMonteWalker asCityAdministratorinAugustof 2023,thatwasoneofthefirstthingsI askedhimtodoistogetontopofthe billingandmakecertainthatourfinanceswereinorder.Thatwas,you know,Iwantedtomakesurethatwas happeningbecauseIfeellikeifwe're purchasingservicesfromsomeone else,theydeservetobepaid.
Whatwasthemostdifficultproblemyoutookon?
Probablythewastewatertreatment facility,wedidnothaveone.Wewere
systemwithacutoffofMay.BeforeI waselectedmayor,Iwasnotprivyto anyinformationanymorethanthe averagecitizen,soItoodidnot know,buttherewasnorealclear communicationcomingfromthecity tosaywhetherornottheyhadaplan. (Morewasstatedhere,currentinformationabouttheWastewaterTreatmentFacilityprogresscanbefound inpreviouseditionsofthepaper).
HowhavetheCityCouncilmeetingschangedsinceyouhavebeen Mayor?
Amajorconcernformeweretimes wheneveracitycouncilmeetingwas happening,Inoticedthatonthe agenda,thereweresometimesthey wouldallowcitizenstospeakand givecitizencomments,butthenthere weretimesthattheywouldnotallow citizenstospeak.Ican'ttellyouwhy theydidthatbecauseI'mnotthem andIwasnotprivytothatinformationbutaccordingtodifferent itemsontheagenda,itappearedas thoughasiftheyweretryingtocontrolwhetherornotcitizenswouldbe allowedtospeakdependingonwhat thetopicwasonthecitycouncil agenda.Ifeltlikethatwasunfair.
I'mallaboutbeingfair.sosinceI havebeenelectedmayor,everycity councilagendasaysthatcitizens haveamaximumoftwominutesto speakonwhatevertopictheywantto speakto.Anytimesomeonewantsto speakonsomething,they'reallowed toduringthecitizencommentmoments. Ifeellikethat'simportant becausecitizensshouldbeallowedto givetheiropinionevenifIdon't agreewithit,theyaretheyshouldbe giventhat,theylivehere-thisistheir cityandtheymayhaveasuggestion thatwehaven'tthoughtaboutorwe maytheymaybeaffectedbysomethingthatwe'renotawareof.Iwant peopletobecomfortableintelling meorcitystafforacouncilanything thattheywanttotellus.Iwantthem tobeallowedtotelluswhatIcallthe uglytruths,evenifwedon'tlikeit.I'd ratherhearwhattheirtruthsareandI feellikethat'simportant.I'mabig believerindeliveringtheuglytruths withloveandgrace.ButIthinkwe
havetosaybecausewe'reelected officials.Andeventheemployees thatarenotelectedofficials,wework forthecitizens.Ifyou'reanemployee,you'reyouworkforthecitizenfor thecitizensofHowe.
Whatdoesthenexttermlooklike foryou?
I'mveryexcitedaboutthisnextterm becausenowthatwehaveour wastewaterresourcerecoverysystem withBVRTIIagreementforthewith ourwithBVRTtothewastewater resourcerecoverysystem.Oncethat isbuilt,wewillhavemorecapacity tooffer,whichisgoingtobringalot moregrowth.I'mexcitedaboutthe growththatwe'regoingtoreceive becausewe'regoingtogetitregardless,butI'mexcitedbecausenow becausecanhavemoresayinwhat comestoourcommunity.
OneofthethingsthatIamreally wantingustoworkonisourcentral park.That'sactuallysomethingthat we'realreadyworkingon.TheCity ofHoweowns46acreseastof downtown.WhenIwaslookinginto thislandpriortobeingelectedmayor IfoundoutHowenotonlyownsthis 46acresdowneastofdowntown,but uponfurtherinvestigation,Irealized thatthepropertyisthesameproperty thatIhadheardcitizensrefertoas thedumpforbrush,andotherthings. Ifeltlikeatthattime,thatwasa wasteofcityresources.Whydowe haveadumpof46acres?We'rebetterthanthat-thecitizensdeservebetterthanthat.Solookingatthat,Ifeel likethe46acresfeetcouldbebetter used,betterutilizedbyinvestingin theyouthandthefutureofoursports lovingcity.The46acreswouldbe idealplacewhereaquadbaseball andinsoftballcomplex,soccerand footballfields,trailsforwalking,hikingandbiking,andafishingpond, maybeadogparkandaplayground forchildren,plentyofadequateparkingandpossiblyevenasmallretail area.That,tome,isanopportunity forustodevelopthatintosomething thatwouldthatthecitizenswould benefitfrom.Wearecurrentlyworkingonthatrightnowandtryingto
-oneofmygoalsistodevelopthat andtomakethatareality.
WheredoyouseeHowein10 years?Whatarethecornerstone ofvaluesyouwanttomaintainas wegrow?
IntenyearsIseeHoweasavital andthrivingcommunity.Acommunitywhohascollectivesuccess thatgeneratesataxrevenue,thatis managedtofundessentialservices, investinfuturegrowthandprovide asafeandstableinfrastructurefor itscitizens,andthat'smygoal.Isee thatwhatwe'vedonehereisweare providingasafeandstableenvironmentforcitizenstobeabletocome andcommunicatetous.Ialsowant towewanttoworkonourinfrastructureandpartofoneofthe thingsthatI'mreallyexcitedabout withBVRTIIiswiththem,they're goingtohelpuswiththatinfrastructure,specificallyorsewer lines.Theotherthingaboutgrowingisthemorethatwegrow,there willbeataxbasethatgeneratesoff ofthehomes,butalsowhenwe havecommercialbusinesses,we willhaveataxrevenueforthat.We canusethattaxrevenuetofund essentialservicesandinvestinour growth,whetheritmeansmaybe wecouldinvestin,forinstance,an elevatedwatertowertomakesure wealwayshavewateravailableto citizens.That'sactuallyamultimilliondollarinvestmentthatwe're workingonotheravenuesoftrying tobeabletofinanceit.
Iunderstandpeople'sconcernabout thechangecoming,because changecanbescarybecauseit's unknown.Buttome,theheartof NorthTexas,ournewslogan, speaksaboutthepeople.ThepeoplearetheheartofHowe.We'rea verylovingandcaringcommunity. Wetrytotakecareofeachother-I thinkwe'refriendlyandIthinkfor themostpart,mosteverybody workstriestoworktogetherand helptheirneighbor,sotospeak. That'stheheart,that'swhatdoesn't havetochangeandhopefullywon't change.

Ourlatestwarstoryinvolvesanoverbearingdadandafootballplayer playingbaseball.
Itwasseveralyearsagoduringa largehighschoolbaseballtournamentthatIobservedaboutthemost possesseddadatagamethatIever saw.
Anew5-Ahighschoolhadopened theseasonbeforeandwerefielding theirfirstvarsityteamsforallsports thatyear.Theywereplayingallof theircontestswithprettymuchall underclassmen.
Onefinespringevening,theywere playingthelocalhostteamofthe annualtournamentandwereplaying thelastcontestoftheday. Duringthisgame,thehostteam whichhadquiteabitoftalentwere scoringalmostatwillandtherunrulewasquicklyapproachingaswe enteredthefifthinning.
AstheBaseballGodswouldhaveit, thevisitingteamwouldactually scoretoclosewithin8runsofthe moretalentedhometeamwhich meantwewouldhavetocomplete thebottomofthefifth.
Thehometeamsurprisinglymade twooutstobegintheinningbutgot backtobusinessquicklyandputtwo runnersonwithback-to-backwalks. Thevisitingcoachdecideditwas timetochangepitchers.
Outtrottedaverylarge6-5235lb. youngmanwhowewillcallBob. Bobbeganhiswarm-upthrows,and hewasheavingthestitchedorbwith plentyofheat.
Hedeclaredtobeready,andmypartnerandIresumedthegamelooking forarunbythehometeamforthe run-ruleandaquickexit. AsBobbeganhisdelivery,heinstantlycommittedabalkmovingboth runnersuponebase.Itwasatthis moment,Inoticedagentlemanstandingbythevisitor’sdugoutbehindthe backstopandhewasbarkingatBob forthebalk.
Bobwassomewhatupsetbutcontinuedtopitchtothebestofhisability butwalkedthefirstbatterhefaced, loadingthebases.Witheachpitch, thegentlemancontinuedtocriticize Bob’sdelivery,throwingmotion,foot placement…etc.
Finally,asBobwasstrugglingtoretirethenextbatter,thecat-calling fromthegentlemanwasenough.As hethrewhisnextpitch,thegentleman continuedandBobhadenough.As hetookthereturnthrowfromhis catcher,heturnedtothegentleman andscreamed****You!!!!

Celebratemykids’effortsandwork.
Afriendoncetoldmehowproudshe wasofhernewson-in-lawforsaving upandbuyingatruck.Thatstuck withme.Weshouldcheerthemonfor workinghard,makingresponsible decisions,andtryingtheirbest no matterthejoborpaththeychoose.
Respecttheirfinancialchoices.Some ofourkidsmightclimbthecorporate ladder.Othersmayworktradesor taketimetofindtheirfooting.Support wherewecan,andpraisetheirefforts.
Loveandrespectmydaughters-and sons-in-law.Ifmychildlovesthem, that’sagoodenoughreasonformeto loveandrespectthemtoo.
Haverealconversations earlyand often.Don’twaituntilyear5,10,or 20toconnect.Buildtherelationship now.
Neverbashtheminfrontoftheirkids.
Itshouldgowithoutsaying,butwe liveinacultureofgossip.Ifwedon’t agreewithourchildrenortheir spouse,wedon’ttellthegrandchildren.Wedon’tputdowntheirparents.Wepraisethem.Wewantour grandchildrentorespecttheirparts andlovethem,notdividethem.
Knowyourkids.Stayclose.Ifyou don’thavearelationshipwithyour ownkids,howcanyouexpectto haveonewiththeirspouse?Include theirspouse theyareonenow. Don’tdividethem.

IknowIwon’tbetheperfectmotherin-law,butIhopemykidsandtheir spousesalwaysknowIlovethemand thatI’mtrying.I’llrespecttheirparenting,offeradvicewithoutoffenseif it’snottaken,anddomybesttoshare thespotlightwiththeothergrandparents.IfI’mvisitedless,I’llwork harder notgetbitter. Theselast20+yearswithmyowninlawshavebeenarollercoasterof emotions.I’vedonemybesttoshield mykidsfromthebumpsbecauseI wantthemtolovetheirgrandparents.
Afterall,theygavemetheirdad.I’m naturallyguarded,andI’velostsome trustovertheyearsthatI’mslowly tryingtogiveback butit’snoteasy. Ifyou’reinthesameboat,Ijustwant toencourageyou:keeptrying.Familymatters.Andifyoucanmakeit work withoutsacrificingyourvaluesorharmingyourpeace it’s worthit.
Onepersonwith theworldinways noonecanimagine. Oneinvention,comingfrom onepersontinkeringinalabor workshopcango fromsciencefictionfantasiestoanindispensablepart ofmodernlifeinonlyashorttime now. Someoftheseremarkabledevices,suchastheintegratedcircuitand thehand-heldcalculatorwerelargelytheresultofthededicationandimaginationofoneman,adoptedTexan andNobelPrizewinnerJackKilby. KilbywasborninJefferson City,Missouri,in1923. Whenhewas stillveryyoung,thefamilymoved toGreatBend,Kansas,wherehisfatherrananelectricalsupplycompany. This,coupledwithhisfather’sinterestinshort-waveradio,nurtureda fascinationwithelectronics. Hespent hoursstudyingthefieldandputting togetherdifferentgadgets. Afterhis graduationfromhigh school,Kilbyenrolledat theUniversityofIllinoisatUrbanaChamplainandearnedabachelors degreeinelectricalengineeringin 1947.
Afterhiscollegegraduation,helanded ajobwithanelectronicsmanufacturer inMilwaukee,Wisconsin. Anxiousto furtherhiseducationwhileworking full-time,hewenttonightschool whereheeventuallyearnedamasters degreeinelectricalengineeringthe MilwaukeeExtensionof theUniversityofWisconsinin 1950. Threeyearslater,hecreatedhis firstinvention:aplug-incircuitthat helpedcomputerengineersexpandthe capacityofcomputers. Itwouldbecomethefirstoftenpatentshewould holdwhenapprovedin1959. TexasInstruments,astillfairlynew Dallascompany,wasinterestedinhis ideasoncircuitminiaturizationand hiredhimasaresearcheranddeveloperin1958. Withinafewmonthsofhis arrival,hemadearevolutionarybreakthrough. Hehelpeddeveloptheintegratedcircuit,aforerunnerofthemicrochipthatallowsmoderncomputers tooperate. Kilby’sinvention,for whichhesecuredthreepatentsfordifferentpartsofthedesign,allowed computerstoperformcalculationsfasterandforcomputerstostartbecoming smallerandcheaper. Shortlyafterward,theU.S.AirForcebegancontractedwithTexasInstrumentstoexperimentwithKilby’sintegratedcircuit,whichweresoonbeingincorporatedintonewcomputerdesigns. ThreemorepatentsweresecuredasKilbyperfectedtheinitialdesign. WithKilby’sbreakthrough,engineersracedtotoponeanotherto makecircuitdesignssmaller,faster, andmoreefficient.
In1965,Kilbyandhisteam inventedthethermalprinter,usingheat forprintingwithindustrialdevices insteadofthecumbersomemechanical keysusedintypewritersfordecades bythispoint. Thisallowedforincreasedspeedandefficiencyandfewer mechanicalproblems. Itwassoon beingusedinthenewcomputersthat
TexasInstrumentswasproducing.
By1967,oneoftheearliest practicalapplicationsoftheintegrated circuitwasdevelopedbyKilbyforthe generalpublic,thehandheldelectronic calculator. Homesandbusinesses acrossthenationweretransformedas itbecameanessentialdeviceforeverythingfromhouseholdbudgetsto schoolwork. Thepatentforthisinventionwasgrantedin1974.
From1978to1984,heserved asadistinguishedprofessorofelectricalengineering atTexasA&MUniversity. Kilbyform allyretiredfromTexasInstrumentsin 1983,justasthecomputerrevolution hehadhelpedinauguratewasgetting underway. Astheworldembraced computersinthe1980s,anincreasing numberofthenewgenerationofdesigners,engineers,andprogrammers pointedtotheimportanceofKilby's workinmakingnewcomputertechnologypossible. Heoftenspoketo collegesandbusinessesaroundthe worldinhisretirementyears. In2000,hereceivedthehighesthonor inscienceforhislifetimeofachievementwhenhewasawardedtheNobel PrizeinPhysics,sharingtheaward withZ.I.AlferovofRussiaandHerbertKroemerofGermany,whohad alsomademajorbreakthroughsin semiconductorresearch. ThemildmanneredengineerforTIwasnow recognizedasoneofhistory'smost brilliantminds. KilbydiedinDallasin 2005atage82.

Therewasatimewhensociety seemedtobemoresensitiveandcompassionateaboutcasualtiesofwar,but todaytherearemanydistractionsthat causethemindandconsciencetobe sobusythatpeopleforgetwhatisimportant,andnotconsidertheuntold agonythesesoldierswentthrough alongwiththeirgrievingfamilies.Anotherexampleistheneglecttoteach youngchildrenaboutwhoGodis. Nevertheless,manystillembracetheir convictionsaboutlifeandGodand willcontinuetostandforsacredtruth. Mygrandmotherwenttobedand criedinagonyforweeksafterher2year-oldson(myuncle)waskilledon thebattlefieldinKorea.
Thecustomofhonoringancestorsby cleaningcemeterieswasanannualact ofremembrance,aswellasachanceto cleananddecoratefamilymemorials. InearlyruralAmerica,itwasusually performedinsummerandwasanoccasionforfamilyreunionsandpicnics. LanceCorporalMiguelKeithwas borninSanAntonio,Texas,onJune2, 1951.Aformerteachersaid,“Miguel wasneveronetositonthesidelines, healwayswantedtobeinvolved.”MiguelleftHighSchoolinJanuary1969 tojointheMarineCorps.Hearrivedin SouthVietnamthatNovemberand wasassignedasariflemanwiththe1st CombinedActionGroup,IIIMarine AmphibiousForce.Intheearlyhours ofMay8,1970,Keithwaswoundedat thestartofasurpriseassaultbyViet CongandNorthVietnameseforceson thevillagewherehisplatoonwas camped.Despitehiswounds,the eighteen-year-oldrantowardtheattackers,killingfive,andwasfurther injuredbytheshrapnelfromagrenade blast.Bleedingheavily,Keithfacedoff againstanothertwenty-fiveattackers, killingfourandforcingtheresttoretreat.However,anenemysoldier creepingupbehindhimshothiminthe back.Hediedthirtyminuteslater. Keith’sbraveryhelpedhisfellowMarinesandSouthVietnamesesoldiers holdofftheattack.Abronzestatueof KeithnowstandsinasouthOmaha park.TheUSSMiguelKeithwas commissionedonMay8,2021.
