Texasisoneof fourstatestoonce havebeenanindependentnation. Thoughonly ashortperiodinits longhistory,ithas becomeasource ofcuriosityand prideformany. Thelastmantoserve aspresidentfortheRepublicofTexas wasDr.AnsonJones. WhileheguidedTexastostatehood,hislifewasone ofsuccessesandfailures.
JoneswasborninGreatBarrington,Massachusetts,inJanuary 1798. Hiseducationwassporadic,but hepossessedagreatintelligenceanda strongsenseofcuriosity. Asateenager,helivedinSenecaFalls,New York. Hehopedtobecomeaprinter, buthesoondecidedtobecomeaphysician. Heapprenticedunderalocal doctorandwassoonlicensedbythe MedicalSocietyofOneida,New York. Hispractice,however,struggled andheranuplargedebts. Hemoved toPhiladelphiatoopenanewpractice andbeganoperatinga school. However,hismoneyproblemsgrewworseandwasarrestedfor non-paymentofhisdebtsin1824. He fledforVenezuelaandeventuallyreturnedtoPhiladelphia. Hereceiveda formalmedicaldegreeatJefferson MedicalCollegein1827.
Hisfinancialfortunesdidnot improve,soheleftPhiladelphiafor NewOrleansin1832,hopingtobecomeamerchantinthegrowingport city. However,hissituationdidnot improve,andhegrewincreasingly frustrated. In1833,friendspersuaded himtomovetoTexas,andhesettledin Brazoria. Bythenextyear,hehada thrivingmedicalpracticeandbecame increasinglyinvolvedinlocalpolitics. Healsobecameinvolvedwiththe localMasonicLodgeandOddFellow society.
TherelationshipbetweenTexas settlersandMexicobecameincreasinglybelligerentastheMexicangovernmentbecameincreasinglyheavyhandedinitsdealingswithitscritics. Jonesbegantoopenlycallfor Texasindependence. InDecember 1835,afterfightinghadbegunbetweensettlersandtheMexicanArmy, anumberofsettlersmetinColumbia forameetingcalledtheConsultation, tohelpdecidethenextmovebysettlers. Jonesledacallforaconvention todeclareindependencebythefollowingspring,buthewouldnotputhis nameincontentiontobeadelegate.
Aswarfarespread,Jonesjoined thefight. Bythespringof1836,he wasservingintheSecondRegiment asajudgeadvocateandasurgeon. He soonrosetobecomeapothecarygeneralofthearmy. AfterTexaswonthe war,hereturnedtoBrazoriatoresume hismedicalcareer. Hewaselectedto theTexasCongressandpushedfor legislationtoencourageeducationand thecreationofanationaluniversity. Hepushedformedicalregulations andopposedthecreationofastate-run bankandrailroadcompany.
PresidentSamHoustonappointedhimasTexasambassadorto theUnitedStatesin1838. Bothmen
sawthattheefforttoannexTexasto theUnitedStateswasfalteringand agreedtowithdrawtherequestforthe timebeing. Inthemeantime,heattemptedtoworkwithEuropeandthe UnitedStatestoimprove trade. Houstoncouldnotrunforreelection,andMirabeauB.Lamarwas electedpresident.
LamarreplacedJonesasambassador, andJonesreturnedtoTexastoservein Congressonceagain. Jonesbecame increasinglycriticalofLamar’spoliciesandspending. Lamarwasextremelyunpopularashistermendedin 1841. Houstonannouncedhewould runforpresidentonce again. Jonesdeclinedtorunforvicepresident. VotersreturnedSamHoustontothepresidencybyawidemargin.
HoustonwasdeterminedtomakeTexaspartoftheUnitedStates. Hehoped tomakeTexaslooktoovaluableeconomicallyandtooimportantstrategicallyfortheUnitedStatestoignore, andJonesagreed. HoustonappointedJonesashissecretaryofstate,and thetwobegannegotiationswiththe UnitedStatesforannexationonce again. Asprogressbegantobemade onannexation,thisputJonesontrack tobeTexas’spresidentwiththe1844 election.

Thetopicofthe afterlifeisinterestingandI appreciatethe comments.I wanttoremind myselfandeveryoneelsethat I’mnotnecessarilydogmatic aboutcertain Biblicalinsights anddonotwant toseemlikean authorityonsubjectsthatwewillprobablynotunderstanduntilwegetto heaven.Topicssuchasend-time prophecyandpredestinationarecomplicatedandcontroversial.Thebottom lineinmanycasesisthatnoonereally knowseverythingabouttheBible,and mosteveryonehastheirownopinions. Biblicalunderstandingisbasedon correctinterpretationsandunfortunatelythisiswherethepridefularguments bringdivisionandseparation.Many declarethereisonlyonetruthbasedon theideathatGodistruthandcannot contradictHimselfandneitherisHe theauthorofconfusion.Wearelookingforwardtothedaywhenallof God’ssaintswillknowHisperfect truth,andagapelovewillbondustogetherinpeaceandjoyforever.
WehavehopeinknowingthatGod promisesrewardsforthosewhohave beenfaithful,obedientandhaveenduredpersecutionandhardshipforthe sakeofHishonorandglory.ReadColossians3:23-24.Jesusisspeakingto HisfollowersinMatthew5:12, “Rejoiceandbeglad,foryourreward inheavenisgreat.”Inchapter6and verse10Heencouragesustopray, “Thykingdomcome,Thywillbe doneonearthasitisinheaven”which emphasizestheplansofGodareunstoppableasHeisincontrolandthe ultimateauthorityoverallthings.We havecomfortinknowingthatnomattertheseverityofourtrials,ourheavenlyFatherwillrememberandhonor oursufferingandsacrifices.James 1:12promises,“Blessedistheone whoendurestemptationsandperseveresundertrials,havingstoodthe test,thatpersonwillreceivethecrown oflifethattheLordhaspromisedto thosewholovehim.”“Henceforth thereislaidupformeacrownofrighteousness,whichtheLord,therighteousjudge,willgivemeatthatday, andnotonlytomebutalsotoallwho havelovedHisappearing”IITimothy 4:8.
Myviewisthatwewillnotremember ourpainfulandsadmemoriesfrom ourpastlife.Ibelievewewillrecognizefamilyandfriendsweseein Heaven,butnotrememberthosewho arenotthere.Torealizesomeonewe lovedismissing,wouldcauseusagonizingdepressionwhichwillnolonger beapartofouremotions.ReadRevelation21:1.WenoticeinLukechapter 16,thestoryoftherichmanandLazarus,thecharactersrecognizeoneanother.Whetherthisisaliteralaccount oraparable,Jesusgivesimportant insightsabouttheafterlife.Thiscould beaglimpseofSheolwhichiswhere
thedeadawaittheressurectionand theirfinaldestinations.God’schildren whohavepassedarerestingandliving inpeacewithGodinparadise,and thoseinhadeswhosenamesarenot writtenintheLamb’sbookoflifeare miserableastheyrealizetheterrible mistaketheyhavemade.Jesusteaches herehowtheycannotcrossoverthe greatgulfwhichseparatesthemfrom eachotherandfromreturningtoearth.
TherichmansaidhewasbeingtormentedandcriedouttoAbrahamtolet himgobackandwarnhisbrothers aboutthisterribleplace,however, Abrahamrepliestheyhavetheprophetsandwouldnotbelieveevenif someonecamebackfromthedead. ManyareconvincedtheparadiseJesus mentionedtothethiefonthecrossisa placewhereHisfollowersdwelluntil theyaretakentoheavenattheressurection,whilehadesisaholding placeforthelostuntilthejudgment, butisnotthefinalGehennalakeoffire orhell.Regardlessofyourinterpretationsabouttheafterlife,weknowifwe havefoughtthefight,finishedtherace, andkeptthefaith,thataccordingtoII Corinthians5:8,“Tobeabsentfrom thebodyistobepresentwiththe Lord.”Inconclusion,pleaseembrace therealitythatGodlovesyouanddesiresforyoutoloveHimwithallof yourheart,mind,andsoul.Knowing youarebornagainishavingapersonal relationshipwithJesus.IsHeonyour mind,areyoulivingalifeoffaithfor Him?Areyourepentingofyoursins andconfessingHimasyourLordand Master?Youaretheonlyonewhocan makesureyouaresaved.
