Everysooften, newsreports emergeofcourt casesthathinge uponthemeaning ofaword,ora spellingerror,or eventhecorrect placementof punctuation. Legaldocumentsand statutesoftenhavesuchcomplicated conditionsorphrasesthatsuchexact precisionisdemanded. Onefamous Texascaseactuallydeterminedthe entireoutcomeofanelection,allhingingonthemeaningofasimplesemicolon.
TheSemicolonCase,asithas becomecalled,eruptedbecauseofa passageinthestate’s1869constitution. Thepassageregardingelections simplyreadthatstateelectionswould beheld“atthecountyseatsoftheseveralcountiesuntilotherwiseprovided bylaw;andthepollsshallbeopened forfourdays.” Littlethoughtwasgiventothedetails. InMarch1873,the statelegislaturepassedalawallowing theelectionstobeheldoutsidethe countyseat. However,electionswere limitedtoonlyoneday.
The1873electionbecamea bittershowdownbetweentheincumbent,RepublicanGov.EdmundJ.DavisandDemocratRichard Coke. DavishadmovedtoTexasasa youngmaninthe1840sandbecame anattorneyandlaterservedasageneralintheUnionArmyduringtheCivilWar. Hebecamegovernorin1870 andbecameincreasinglyunpopular. Coke,alsoanattorney,wasaVirginianativewhoeventuallysettledin Waco. HevolunteeredfortheConfederatearmyduringtheCivilWarand becameajudgeafterthewarended, eventuallyrisingtothestateSupreme Court. IntheDecember2contest, Cokewonwithmorethan67%ofthe vote.
Bothsideschargedirregularities againsttheother;attorneysgathered. Thefirstcaseappearedbefore thestateSupremeCourtjustafew dayslater. AmanknownonlyasRodriguezhadbeenchargedinHarris Countywithattemptingtovote twice. Hislawyers,however,saidhis arrestwasillegalbecausetheelection itselfwasillegal. RodriguezwasallegedlyimprisonedinHouston,butDemocratsbelievedhehadbeenhiredby thedefeatedsheriffofHarrisCounty,a Republican,toinvalidatetheentire electiononatechnicality. TheHarris Countydistrictattorney,representing theStateofTexasattheSupreme CourtinAustin,arguedthatthecase shouldbedismissedasthewholeaffair wasapoliticalquestionandnotalegal one.
Thethree-judgecourt,appointedby Davis,disagreedandorderedthecase tocontinue. TheSemicolonCase camedownto,assomanylegalargumentsdo,understandingthemeaning ofthefineprint.
Thesemicolonistypically usedinsentencestoconnecttwoindependentclausesthatarenotconnected withaconjunctionortoreplacecommaswhenwritingliststhatcontain additionalcommas. Thepreciserules
regardingusagehaveshiftedsince thesemicolonbeganappearingregularlyinEnglish-languagewritinginthe sixteenthcentury.
Rodriguez’slawyersarguedthatthe electionwasillegalbecausewhenthe legislaturechangedtheelectionlaw ninemonthsearlier,itonlyhadthe powertochangethelocationsofpollingplacesandnotthenumberofdays ofvoting. Thesemicolon,lawyers argued,madetheclauseonthefourdayvotingperiodseparatefromthe restofthesentenceandmeantthatthe legislaturedidnothavethepowerto changethenumbersofvotingdays withoutchangingtheconstitutionitself.
TheTexasSupremeCourtthusruled thattheelectionwasillegal. Rodriguezwasfreetogo;Texaspoliticsexplodedinthemeantime.
Daysofprotestsmetthe court’sdecision. Thousandsgathered attheStateCapitolinAustinwhile Davisbarricadedhimselfinhisoffice inanefforttoholdpower. Cokeignoredthedecisionandproclaimed himselfgovernor. Dayslater,Davis resigned.
TheConstitutionof1876replacedthe 1869document. Ithasservedthestate eversince,regardlessofsemicolons. Foreverafterward,thecourtserving underthe1869constitutionwouldbe derisivelyreferredtoas “TheSemicolonCourt.”
Intheend,the mightysemicolonprevailed. Aside fromthepoliticalcarnageitcaused,the casestandsasacriticalreminderofthe importanceofproperpunctuationand precisionwithwriting. Evenwhena teachermaynolongerbearoundto gradeanyparticularwriteronmatters ofpunctuation,someoneisstillwatching.
Thisweekwe continuewith ourdiscussion aboutheaven, andrealize we’veleft manystones unturned.Even thoughour knowledgeof thenextlifeis sparsebydesign,ourcuriositymakesthisa popularsubject.Thereare countlessspeculationsofwhatheaven willbelikeandlikeallofyouIhave myownthoughts.Iappreciateall theemailsaboutyourthoughtsandI agreewiththegeneralconsensusthat seeingGodinpersonisgoingtofar outweighoursurroundings.Weknow thatwhateverHehaspreparedforus willbeamilliontimesmore breathtakingthananythingwecould imagine,andourfascinationwillbe focusedonspendinganeternitywith theonewholovesandsavesus. OurBiblehas66booksthatwerewrittenbydifferentpeopleandtosaythe least,it’sachallengetounderstand. Manybelievethereisonlyoneinterpretationofthesetruths,yetdisagreementshavedividedGod’speople since itwaswritten.Ifthereisonlyonetruth ofHiswrittenword,whycan’tevery ChristianheartheHolySpirit? Arguingandfightingdoesnotusually convinceanyonewhohasalready madeuptheirmind.I’vestudiedthe Biblefornearly50years,andwhat I’velearnedabouttheFather,Son,and HolySpirit,hasnotcomefrom others,butrathertalkingandlistening toHimdirectly.TheBibleisourgeneralguide,butknowingHim personallycomesfromquiettimesof intimacywithHim.WecantrainourselvestoconversewithHiminour mindsandlistenforHisstillsmall voicewhichdevelopsspiritualsensitivityandanawarenessofHispresence.
Wesaywecannotwaittoworship Jesusinperson,ortohaveachanceto serveHimwithallofourhearts,butit strikesmeasoddtoseesomewho lackenthusiasmaboutabidingwith Himnow.Manybelievethatinheaven Hewillbethecenterofeverythought anddeed,asHehelps,teaches,and guidesus.Thesearetrulydreamsof blissforthefollowerofChrist,butI thoughtHewantedtobetheLordof ourlivesinthislife.Maybeourlackof concentrationiscausedbynotbeing abletoliterallyseeorhearHim.Most envisiononedaystandingaround Histhronewiththeirhandsraisedand voicesliftedhighincontinuousworshipastheBibledeclaresthatHeis worthytoreceiveallgloryandadorationforalleternity.ListentoRevelationchapter5verses11through13. “ThenIlooked,andheardthevoiceof manyangelsaroundthethrone,the livingcreatures,andtheelders;and thenumberofthemwastenthousand timestenthousand,andthousandsof thousands,sayingwithaloudvoice: ‘WorthyistheLambwhowasslainto receivepowerandrichesandwisdom,
Andstrengthandhonorandglory andblessing!’Andeverycreature whichisinheavenandontheearth andundertheearthandsuchasarein the sea,andallthatareinthem,Iheard saying:“Blessingandhonorandglory andpowerbetoHimwhositsonthe throne,andtotheLamb,foreverand ever!”Thereisnodoubtwewillspend plentyoftime,(eventhough measuredtimewillbenomore) aroundGod’sthrone,butI’malsoconvincedwewillbeinvolvedwithworking, serving,helping,blessing,andaccomplishingHisdesires.
So,whoisgoingtoheaven?Mostwill saythosewhohavebeenbornagain whichmeansbeingtransformedinto anewspiritualidentityasJesusshared withNicodemus.Doesthishappen instantlyorisitagradual progression?Thissoundssimple,but it’snot.Infact,itcouldbeoneofthe mostmisconstruedconceptsinthe NewTestamentasChristalsodeclared inMatthew7:21thateternalsalvation includesdoingGod’swill. Regardlessofthemoderneasypath theologies,thegiftofheavenisnotjust handedouttoeveryonewhosays theywantafreeticket.Godwillnotbe deceived.TheperceptionofjustbelievingthatHeisrealasaprerequisite foreternallifeisaterriblemisunderstanding,aseventhedevilandthedemonsbelieve,fear,andtrembleinHis presence.Ofcourse,noonewantsto sufferforalleternity,buttakingupour crossisalotmorethanjusthoping thatGodislikealenientgrandfather.
